[FairfieldLife] Origins of TM: Dr. Raj Varma, Maharishi's uncle?

1940's, Showing the Origins of ™..

Nice quotes from the introduction below.

“i felt so happy with my mantra, but i kept forgetting it while my fingers were
moving automatically. In each round this happened! What can I do about it?!”

a wonderful smile was on Guru Dev’s face.
“FOUND!” he exclaimed. “You have learnt to transcend the mantra! Excellent! You
transcended the mantra which wants to go back to the source. The best thing
that can happen! When you are aware of having forgotten the mantra you quietly
pick up the mantra again and continue happily. This was very good meditation.
Continue meditating like that now and tonight and report to me tomorrow
morning.” So very happy checkings followed.’

This must be old news, but new to me:

Before Guru Dev became Shankaracharya, on September 14th 1940 someone by the
name of Raj Varma made his way across Jabalpur to where Guru Dev was staying,
in order to become an initiate of Guru Dev:-

'So before sunrise Dr. Varma came full of joy to his initiation. Guru Dev did
the puja with his fruit and flowers and then gave him his mantra and asked him
to sit down. He gave him a rosary. An indian rosary has mostly 108 beads. Guru
Dev told Dr. Varma to close his eyes and repeat the mantra and with every
mantra touch a new bead so that the rosary would go forward in his hand with
each mantra. Then he told him to only think the mantra easily without speaking
it any more while his fingers moving forward touched the beads. The rosary has
one extra bead attached to it where you start and where eventually you finish
the round of 108. When Guru Dev saw that Dr. Varma had reached the end of the
round at the extra bead, he told him to stop thinking the mantra. After some
time he told him to open his eyes slowly.

Brilliant and a fine extension of the scientific process (discourse). Thanks.

 yifuxero writes:
Let's review some hypotheses and assumptions.

 1. In regard to "modern" scientific inquiry, we may be in agreement that such
methodologies are quite limited in scope, since there are vast bodies of
phenomena beginning with simple psychic experiences that most people "believe"
are true based on subjective experiences and the testimonials of others. This
body of "unproved" phenomena extends into such areas as crop circles, alien
appearances and abductions, cattle mutilations, Big Foot sightings, etc, and
ultimately, the ME.
 ...
 2. Most profoundly and of great importance, is the nature of Gnosis
(Self-knowledge of the Atman leading to complete Brahman realization). We can
go back to the early Gnostics to see how this as a Movement gradually gave way
to Dualistic dogmatic religion. In the 20-th century prior to WWII, there were
minor revivals such as the "I AM Movement". After WWII, we have Yogananda,
Kirpal Sing, Eckankar,, etc; but most important, MMY.
Ultimately, we come across (through subjective experience,) the Self - Purusha
and find a true Paradox:
The Self (Purusha) is indeed "experiential" but purely so, and as such, is not
by It's very nature objectively provable or demonstrable to others.
Thus, in terms of the ongoing evolutionary development of mankind (Cf. MMY,
Eckart Tolle, and others); the hypothesis has been promulgated that the long
term "Salvation" of individuals and of mankind is innately connected to Gnosis,
rather than the dogma of belief systems and dualistic religions.
Thus, the only way to "prove" Purusha is to experience It for yourself; and a
tipping point in evolution will occur when vast numbers of people simply
"overpower": those endowed with dualistic perception alone. This is the
hypothesis of Tolle's "Heaven on Earth" concept. When large numbers of people
are Self-aware, such Gnosis will simply take it for granted as being an
intrinsic part of life, having no need for "modern science" to prove It's
existence as the basis of reality.

 3. OTOH, the ME is a SHAKTI-basic phenomena. Among those practicing TM for
any significant length of time, a type of perception awakens in which Shakti as
a subtle type of energy creeps into overall awareness, with a "Shakti-meter",
allowing people to discriminate between various people and places radiating
that Energy. In a sense, Shakti can be considered a subtle type of "field".
Thus, the TMO's use of the term would be appropriate.

 4. Unfortunately, at this state of modern scientific inquiry, there's no
empirical evidence for the existence of
. higher dimensions beyond our materialistic, naturalistic world. The fact
that may people have experienced contact with Angels, the dead, and
interdimensional phenomena is a moot point. Such personal testimonies maketh
not what's acceptable as "science". If this were the case, nut cases claiming
Alien abductions and others such as Scientologists AND the TMO would (and
have!) attempted to make a spurious and dishonest claim for their own versions
of what "should" be the true post-modern science.

 5. Factually, we are dealing with MODERN scientific methods, not such
futuristic model of what science "should" be like. If that were not the case,
the TMO would (and does), have their own make-believe version of science, the
Scientologists theirs, and the UFO-ologists theirs.. Do I "believe" in the
existence of Angels, interdimensional entities, and Aliens, as well as very
common psychic experiences. Yes!

Pretty clearly the science indicates that a largest most significant direct
‘social action’ that people can take, that activists could take on as their own
civil disobedience to the norm, is to come (back?) and meditate now with the
large group in Fairfield, Iowa. That is it. That is what this group is about.
Every thing else are externalities. And distraction and excuses to meditating
in the collective.

A spiritual renewal movement that aligns itself with, or allows itself to be
aligned with, particular social positions both alters itself in so doing but is
drawn away from its initial stance, at least in the eyes of potential
adherents, and thus both attracts those interested in the social policy
position rather than the spiritual aspect or repels people who would otherwise
have been attracted to the spiritual aspect but can’t “cotton to “ the policy
position.

For instance, one way or another being known for some social action position,
like organic, vegetarian, and non-GMO food, or known for its spiritual
practice, is the TM movement or are TM ‘ers themselves a social justice or
spiritual renewal movement? A problem with the TM group being known for
mundane social action positions is that social activism can redefine the group
differently from its origins of being a spiritual regeneration movement
promulgating Transcendentalism through transcendental meditationist practice.

As with an early Quaker movement moving on from its more narrow spiritual
regeneration in promulgated collective meditation practice, what once began in
time as identified spiritual regenerative movement then transformed over
towards facilitating social reform. And likewise, current organizations (21st
Century) within a reforming post-founder TM movement foster a relevance for
themselves through advocacies in revolutionary education, health, food safety,
agricultural, architectural, and GMO public policy reform. As this happens in
spiritual revival groups, is this transformation a formula in dilution of what
was originally gathered?

Discerning between spiritual community and political activism: walking a line
between spirituality or pacifism, anti-slavery, anti-war, or anti-GMO activism,

in spiritual regeneration movements a position of policy rooted in methodical
abstinence from mundane political opinion on social issues is not without
example.

During the Vietnam war years as Maharishi Mahesh Yogi was traveling the world
giving spiritual talks and teaching meditation, in the West he would generally
refrain from particular advice or partisan consultations about the Vietnam war
as to whether young people should be drafted or not into the armies to fight in
the Southeast Asia war or as to their seeking conscientious objection in
pacifism as a deferment from the war.

Initially Quaker (Society of Friends) founders facilitated a spiritual
practice movement of meditation and, for instance, were neither a movement for
abolitionism or pacifism as they have later become well known for in their
narrative. Partly for their own safety within a larger society an early
consideration within their fledgling group that it was not necessarily their
place as a spiritual practice movement to be advocating social, political or
worldly position but that they were primarily a spiritual practice group, of
‘Friends’.

For some time Quaker founding generations were conservative in this position
of not being antagonizing to the world around them in mixing their primary work
of regenerating spiritual practice with particular secular advocacy. This was
weighed with practical expediency and conscience with their working as a
broader public teaching organization. The workings of social conscience that
Quakers are now more readily known for came subsequently into the being of
their movement to become very much part of their current spiritual/religious
practice. These encroachments would come to their movement in time.

Initially Quakers were more strictly a spiritual practice group of
meditationism and their social actions of conscience as a people have come
along to be adopted in a sequence.

[FairfieldLife] Journals Publish Maharishi Effect Studies on Invincible America Assembly

Scholarly Journals Continue to Publish Maharishi Effect Studies on Invincible
America Assembly

Following the publication a year ago of a study showing reduced homicide and
violent crime during the peak years of the Invincible America Assembly from
2006–2010, a new study published last month found a reduction in motor vehicle
fatalities. And three additional studies will be coming out soon.

"The level of acceptance is amazing," said lead author Ken Cavanaugh. "There's
rising receptivity to the notion of a field effect of consciousness and that
group meditation can affect the environment."

The recent study reported that group practice of the Transcendental Meditation®
and TM-Sidhi® program by participants in the Invincible America Assembly at MUM
reduced the rate of U.S. motor vehicle fatalities by a total of 20.6% over the
four-year period 2007–2010.

All other accidental deaths were reduced by 13.5%. "An estimated 19,435 motor
vehicle fatalities and 16,759 other accidental deaths were averted," said
coauthor Michael Dillbeck.

>From 2007–2010 the group size was above or near 1,725 participants, the size
>predicted to have a positive influence on the U.S. quality of life. This
>predicted threshold represents the square root of 1% of the U.S. population.

"Maharishi explains that when a sufficient number of individuals are
experiencing pure consciousness during group practice, the field of pure
consciousness is enlivened in the entire population," Dr. Cavanaugh said. "This
field effect positively influences the quality of consciousness in the
individuals in society in much the same direction as that experienced by those
practicing the Transcendental Meditation technique."

Specifically, this research tested the hypothesis that group practice results
in increased alertness and reduced stress in the general population, thus
contributing to reduced accident rates.

In their study, published in the Journal of Consciousness Studies, the
researchers first calculated a baseline trend for both accidental fatality
rates 2002–2006, and then used time series intervention analysis to compare
that baseline with the corresponding trend for the intervention period
2007–2010.

For motor vehicle fatality rates, they found that a slightly declining trend
during the baseline period 2002–2006 accelerated significantly beginning in
January 2007 and continued declining during the intervention period 2007–2010.

In the case of all other accidents, there was a highly significant shift from a
rising trend in 2002–2006 to a substantially slower positive trend in 2007–2010.

The probability that the reduced trend for motor vehicle fatalities was due to
chance was 3.7 in 10 million million and for fatalities due to other accidents,
less than 8.4 in 1 million.

The prediction of reduced accidental fatalities was lodged in advance. The
researchers were able to rule out alternative explanations.

[FairfieldLife] Study Shows Brain Coherence When Listening to Vedic Pandits

Study Shows Brain Coherence When Listening to Vedic Pandits

Those who have listened to live Vedic recitation by pandits often have
experiences of deep inner silence, and now a new EEG study describes the
coherent brain wave patterns associated with those experiences.

EEG measurements on the 37 subjects while they listened to the recitation not
only found coherence in their brain wave patterns, but that the coherence was
actually higher than during their practice of the Transcendental Meditation
technique.

However, study author Fred Travis explains that all of the subjects had not
only been practicing the Transcendental Meditation technique for an average of
34 years but had also practiced the TM-Sidhi program an average of 28 years.
When he measured four subjects who practiced only Transcendental Meditation,
they didn't have the same high level of brain wave coherence.

"Those who practice the TM-Sidhi program have cultivated the habit of sitting
in silence and allowing the mental activity to easily pass through awareness,"
Dr. Travis said. "This provided the basis, I think, for them to profit
maximally from listening to Vedic recitation."

Dr. Travis analyzed the subjective reports of the participants' experience
during listening to the recitation and found that their experiences were
generally 1) deeper than during Transcendental Meditation practice; 2)
experienced as an inner process; and 3) characterized by lively silence. They
reported that they ''experienced a depth of experience rarely experienced even
during deep Transcendental Meditation practice."

EEG measurements showed higher alpha1 coherence, which is associated with the
experience of pure consciousness. And they showed higher theta2 coherence,
which is associated with attending to internal mental processes. The latter
finding explains the participants' experience that the Vedic recitations felt
as though they weren't external sounds but rather internal vibrations.

Those who only practiced Transcendental Meditation had higher gamma coherence,
with gamma being associated with focusing on an external object. Hence, their
experience of the recitation as an outer experience.

The study was published last month in Consciousness and Cognition. Coauthors of
the study were Niyazi Parim and Amrita Shrivastava.
