Evidence Builds That Meditation Strengthens the Brain

ScienceDaily (Mar. 14, 2012) — Earlier evidence out of UCLA suggested that 
meditating for years thickens the brain (in a good way) and strengthens the 
connections between brain cells. Now a further report by UCLA researchers 
suggests yet another benefit.


Eileen Luders, an assistant professor at the UCLA Laboratory of Neuro Imaging, 
and colleagues, have found that long-term meditators have larger amounts of 
gyrification (folding of the cortex, which may allow the brain to process 
information faster) than people who do not meditate. Further, a direct 
correlation was found between the amount of gyrification and the number of 
meditation years, possibly providing further proof of the brain's 
neuroplasticity, or ability to adapt to environmental changes.

The article appears in the online edition of the journal Frontiers in Human 
Neuroscience.

The cerebral cortex is the outermost layer of neural tissue. Among other 
functions, it plays a key role in memory, attention, thought and consciousness. 
Gyrification or cortical folding is the process by which the surface of the 
brain undergoes changes to create narrow furrows and folds called sulci and 
gyri. Their formation may promote and enhance neural processing. Presumably 
then, the more folding that occurs, the better the brain is at processing 
information, making decisions, forming memories and so forth.

Rather than just comparing meditators and non-meditators, we wanted to see if 
there is a link between the amount of meditation practice and the extent of 
brain alteration, said Luders. That is, correlating the number of years of 
meditation with the degree of folding.

Of the 49 recruited subjects, the researchers took MRI scans of 23 meditators 
and compared them to 16 control subjects matched for age, handedness and sex. 
(Ten participants dropped out.) The scans for the controls were obtained from 
an existing MRI database, while the meditators were recruited from various 
meditation venues. The meditators had practiced their craft on average for 20 
years using a variety of meditation types -- Samatha, Vipassana, Zen and more. 
The researchers applied a well-established and automated whole-brain approach 
to measure cortical gyrification at thousands of points across the surface of 
the brain.

They found pronounced group differences (heightened levels of gyrification in 
active meditation practitioners) across a wide swatch of the cortex, including 
the left precentral gyrus, the left and right anterior dorsal insula, the right 
fusiform gyrus and the right cuneus.

Perhaps most interesting, though, was the positive correlation between the 
number of meditation years and the amount of insular gyrification.

The insula has been suggested to function as a hub for autonomic, affective 
and cognitive integration, said Luders. Meditators are known to be masters in 
introspection and awareness as well as emotional control and self-regulation, 
so the findings make sense that the longer someone has meditated, the higher 
the degree of folding in the insula.

While Luders cautions that genetic and other environmental factors could have 
contributed to the effects the researchers observed, still, The positive 
correlation between gyrification and the number of practice years supports the 
idea that meditation enhances regional gyrification.

Other authors of the study included Florian Kurth, Emeran A. Mayer, Arthur 
W.Toga, and Katherine L. Narr, all of UCLA, and Christian Gaser, University of 
Jena, Germany. Funding was provided by several organizations, including the 
National Institutes of Health. The authors report no conflict of interest.

From various independent sources, the official teaching of Maharishi in regard 
to the fate of Self-Realized (in CC or higher) people after death is that 
there's no further bodily existence, gross or subtle; since the purpose of 
evolution has been fulfilled.  Thus, the drop has merged into the Ocean of 
Being but there's no drop left.

Conventional Existence
So how do things exist if they don’t exist inherently? According to the 
Buddhist 
teachings, things exist in an everyday, non-inherent, dependent way. Our mode 
of 
existence is dependent on many things, such as the causes and conditions that 
give rise to us, the components that make us up, and the ways we are cognized 
and categorized. According to the teachings, we are not separate and 
independent 
entities, but rather we exist in dependence on webworks of relations and 
transactions.
For example, we can say that a bottle of milk exists in a dependent, 
conventional way because you can go to the store, lift the bottle of milk off 
the shelf, pay for it, and bring it home. It exists in dependence on its 
surroundings, its having been manufactured, and in relation to the actions of 
the store employees and yourself. The bottle of milk is not found to exist 
independently of these things.
It is taught that all things are empty and dependent like this. That includes 
people and all other living beings, as well as consciousness and 
unconsciousness; pleasure and pain; time and space; cause and effect; good and 
bad; logic and math; language, meaning and reference; art, commerce and 
science; 
planets, boulders and bridges; unicorns and Sherlock Holmes; energy, thoughts, 
feelings, and bodily sensations. Whatever exists is said to exist

choiceless awareness, or doership without regard to consequences.
Take an Enlightened person who both before and after E. works as a commodities 
trader.  Is somebody saying that after E. there's no choice as to trades, and 
their outcome?  If not, he'd be out on the street without a job. He'd better 
perform! (and be very concerned about the outcome of choices)

Also, a case can be made as to the same component of non-doership for those in 
complete ignorance of the Self.  Various components of the mind (the separate 
Ego) in such a state are misidentified. However, the misidentification is only 
apparent, so that such persons are only apparently deluded. OK, now we say 
that E. people are not deluded, while the ignorant folk are apparently deluded. 
However, whether not-deluded or apparently deludedced; these references apply 
to 
something relative.

Some relative component of an Enlightened persons says I know the Self; 
whereas the other says I don't know the Self, what is IT?.

Both are simply assertions in the conditional realm of existence, the first 
having an experiential component of Self. The bottom line is that the 
ignorant person's assertion is equally the Self as conditioned existence.

At any rate, some key words are tantric and global (i.e. the targeting 
principle along with the whole picture); but this will be left to future 
discussions.  For now, concentrate on enhancing your SHAKTI level, since the 
Dome experience is ultimately about ME ; that is SHE; standing for SHE the 
Goddess (personification of Shakti) and with SE = the SHAKTI Effect.  But even 
without a Personified Goddess, Saivite Traditions (e.g. Muktananda's SYDA) and 
Ramana Maharshi (Arunachala Shiva); generate HUGE amounts of Shakti if one 
listens to the CD audios of Pundits in those Traditions.

a. Vaj doesn't respond.  That's because he's never been initiated into TMhe

c. when it comes to Eastern Schools he knows a lot. True, in some academic 
sense; but he's still lacking in direct knowledge of TM, since his remarks on 
the subject don't match people's experiences, as to a statistical 
generalization. (he cherry picks the tail end of the distribution).

d. His knowledge skewed?  Ans: VERY, when it comes to TM.; although he may know 
a lot about Norbu Rinpoche, a genuine Buddhist Saint imo.  (a fine feather in 
Vaj's cap).

e. People rarely challenge him successfully.  I'd say his lack of direct 
experience with TM speaks for itself, so he's a pushover in that regard..
