[FairfieldLife] : Evidence builds that meditation strengthens the brain

Subject: Evidence builds that meditation strengthens the brain

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/03/120314170647.htm?utm_source=feedburnerutm_medium=feedutm_campaign=Feed%3A+sciencedaily+%28ScienceDaily%3A+Latest+Science+News%29
Evidence Builds That Meditation Strengthens the Brain

ScienceDaily (Mar. 14, 2012) — Earlier evidence out of UCLA suggested that
meditating for years thickens the brain (in a good way) and strengthens the
connections between brain cells. Now a further report by UCLA researchers
suggests yet another benefit.

Eileen Luders, an assistant professor at the UCLA Laboratory of Neuro Imaging,
and colleagues, have found that long-term meditators have larger amounts of
gyrification (folding of the cortex, which may allow the brain to process
information faster) than people who do not meditate. Further, a direct
correlation was found between the amount of gyrification and the number of
meditation years, possibly providing further proof of the brain's
neuroplasticity, or ability to adapt to environmental changes.

The article appears in the online edition of the journal Frontiers in Human
Neuroscience.

The cerebral cortex is the outermost layer of neural tissue. Among other
functions, it plays a key role in memory, attention, thought and consciousness.
Gyrification or cortical folding is the process by which the surface of the
brain undergoes changes to create narrow furrows and folds called sulci and
gyri. Their formation may promote and enhance neural processing. Presumably
then, the more folding that occurs, the better the brain is at processing
information, making decisions, forming memories and so forth.

Rather than just comparing meditators and non-meditators, we wanted to see if
there is a link between the amount of meditation practice and the extent of
brain alteration, said Luders. That is, correlating the number of years of
meditation with the degree of folding.

Of the 49 recruited subjects, the researchers took MRI scans of 23 meditators
and compared them to 16 control subjects matched for age, handedness and sex.
(Ten participants dropped out.) The scans for the controls were obtained from
an existing MRI database, while the meditators were recruited from various
meditation venues. The meditators had practiced their craft on average for 20
years using a variety of meditation types -- Samatha, Vipassana, Zen and more.
The researchers applied a well-established and automated whole-brain approach
to measure cortical gyrification at thousands of points across the surface of
the brain.

They found pronounced group differences (heightened levels of gyrification in
active meditation practitioners) across a wide swatch of the cortex, including
the left precentral gyrus, the left and right anterior dorsal insula, the right
fusiform gyrus and the right cuneus.

Perhaps most interesting, though, was the positive correlation between the
number of meditation years and the amount of insular gyrification.

The insula has been suggested to function as a hub for autonomic, affective
and cognitive integration, said Luders. Meditators are known to be masters in
introspection and awareness as well as emotional control and self-regulation,
so the findings make sense that the longer someone has meditated, the higher
the degree of folding in the insula.

While Luders cautions that genetic and other environmental factors could have
contributed to the effects the researchers observed, still, The positive
correlation between gyrification and the number of practice years supports the
idea that meditation enhances regional gyrification.

Other authors of the study included Florian Kurth, Emeran A. Mayer, Arthur
W.Toga, and Katherine L. Narr, all of UCLA, and Christian Gaser, University of
Jena, Germany. Funding was provided by several organizations, including the
National Institutes of Health. The authors report no conflict of interest.

Jerry:
From various independent sources, the official teaching of Maharishi in regard
to the fate of Self-Realized (in CC or higher) people after death is that
there's no further bodily existence, gross or subtle; since the purpose of
evolution has been fulfilled.  Thus, the drop has merged into the Ocean of
Being but there's no drop left.
...
But that viewpoint is contradicted by Shankara's commentary on the Brahma
Sutras, quotes below. Any comments on this topic?

Thanks for your help

...ps:  note the statement that The released souls are embodied or
non-embodied according to their will.

Brahma Sutra summary of the final chapter:
!--[if !supportEmptyParas]-- IV. 4.1 thru IV.4.3
The released jiva (soul) does not acquire any new characteristics but only
manifests its true nature.
IV. 4.4
The released soul stands to Brahman in the relation of non-separation.
IV. 4.5 – 4.7
The characteristics of the released soul are of the nature of Brahman – i.e.
solely as pure intelligence,as that is the soul's Self.
IV. 4.8 - IV.4.9
The soul effects its desires by mere will (sankalpa)
IV. 4.10 – 4.14
The release souls are embodied or non-embodied according to their will
!--[if !supportEmptyParas]-- IV. 4.15 – 4.16
The released soul can animate several bodies at the same time.
IV. 4.17 – IV. 4.21
The released soul has all the lordly powers except the powers of creation,
continuance and dissolution.
!--[if !supportEmptyParas]-- When he says that this is only liberation in

[FairfieldLife] Brahman doesn't need a cause

2011-05-09 Thread Yifu Xero

Subject: Brahman doesn't need a cause

Mundane arguments drawn from personal experiences of causation don't
necessarily apply to the universe at large, i.e. Brahman.
Wiki::  (Cosmological argument)

Even though causality applies to the known world, it does not necessarily apply
to the universe at large. In other words, it is unwise to draw conclusions from
an extrapolation of causality beyond experience.[13]

On a supposed first cause.  If there is a first cause, say Brahman, Krishna,
Vishnu, or Whomever, why is the first cause exempt from a prior cause.?
Brahman being self-caused, is not in this category of requiring an infinite
regression, having existed eternally., with no cause other than Itself.

On the First Cause (supposed), Wiki says regarding arguments which lead to
Deism::
Identity of a First Cause
An objection against the theist implication of the proposition is that even if
one accepts the argument as a proof of a First Cause, it does not identify that
First Cause with God. The argument does not go on to ascribe to the First Cause
some of the basic attributes commonly associated with, for instance, a
theisticGod, such as immanenceor omnibenevolence.[14]Rather, it simply argues
that a First Cause (e.g. the Big Bang, God, or an unarticulated First Cause)
must exist.[16]
Furthermore, even if one chooses to accept God as the First Cause, there is an
argument that God's continued interaction with the Universe is not required.
This is the foundation for beliefs such as deismthat accept that a god created
the Universe, but then ceased to have any further interaction with it.[17]

2011-04-05 Thread Yifu Xero

Subject: There are more things in Heaven and earth, Horatio,...

Hamlet:
And therefore as a stranger give it welcome.
There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio,
Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.
Hamlet Act 1, scene 5, 159–167
Horatio and Marcellus, though advised against it, barge into Hamlet's
conversation with his father's ghost [see SOMETHING IS ROTTEN IN THE STATE OF
DENMARK]. Hamlet is a little unforthcoming with the news imparted by this
spirit, who is still rustling about under the stage. So it's hard to figure
what
Horatio and Marcellus are being asked to keep quiet, though Hamlet and the
burrowing ghost (a pioner, or miner) insist.
Horatio, a model of rationality, is still having a hard time swallowing the
whole business. Ghosts are not the sort of beings his philosophy easily takes
into account. We know that Horatio is, like Hamlet, a student at the University
of Wittenberg, a notable outpost of Protestant humanism. The philosophy he
studies there is probably classical—a compound of ethics, logic, and natural
science. The emphasis on everyday phenomena pretty much excludes speculation
about talking ghosts.
Wittenberg, however, isn't just a place where sober-minded Horatios debate
Aristotelian physics. In Christopher Marlowe's play of the late 1580s, Doctor
Faustus, it is where the doctor lectures and, on the sideline, fraternizes with
demons.

The Nov. 2010 release of Madhusree Mukerjee's book, Churchill's Secret War:
The British Empire and the Raving of India during WWII, has readers reeling.
Between 1939 and 1945, the British used India's entire output of timber, woolen
textiles and leather goods, as well as three quarters of its steel and cement,
for defense.  But few know the full story.  To prevent Japanese invasion, the
British confiscated all forms of transport on the coast of Bengal Economies
were
crashing.  Without boats for trade, with rice prices beyond reach, Bengalis
began to starve.  The British hoarded rice not only for the war effort. They
blocked even humanitarian wheat shipments from other countries. Mukerjee
writes,
Churchill valued India so much, and hated Indian nationalists so much, that he
wanted to starve them to death Over three million died.

Wiki:
Though Herbert's novel Dune seems to describe Harkonnen's suspensor belt as
simply enabling him to stand and walk upright rather than actually fly,[4]
both the 1984 film and the 2000 miniseries feature the Baron utilizing the
suspensors to levitate off the ground and float through the air in a
flying-like
manner. The later Prelude to Dune prequels also employ this floating ability.
Herbert does, however, note Harkonnen floating slightly off the floor after he
is killed. [11]

[FairfieldLife] Conditional Existence, essay by Greg Goode

2011-01-27 Thread Yifu Xero

Subject: Conditional Existence, essay by Greg Goode

from the Greg Goode website:

Conventional Existence
So how do things exist if they don’t exist inherently? According to the
Buddhist
teachings, things exist in an everyday, non-inherent, dependent way. Our mode
of
existence is dependent on many things, such as the causes and conditions that
give rise to us, the components that make us up, and the ways we are cognized
and categorized. According to the teachings, we are not separate and
independent
entities, but rather we exist in dependence on webworks of relations and
transactions.
For example, we can say that a bottle of milk exists in a dependent,
conventional way because you can go to the store, lift the bottle of milk off
the shelf, pay for it, and bring it home. It exists in dependence on its
surroundings, its having been manufactured, and in relation to the actions of
the store employees and yourself. The bottle of milk is not found to exist
independently of these things.
It is taught that all things are empty and dependent like this. That includes
people and all other living beings, as well as consciousness and
unconsciousness; pleasure and pain; time and space; cause and effect; good and
bad; logic and math; language, meaning and reference; art, commerce and
science;
planets, boulders and bridges; unicorns and Sherlock Holmes; energy, thoughts,
feelings, and bodily sensations. Whatever exists is said to exist
conventionally, but not inherently.

[FairfieldLife] Practicing Sahaj Samadhi

Subject: Practicing Sahaj Samadhi

thx everyone for the excellent points!  I would dispute the existence of
choiceless awareness, or doership without regard to consequences.
Take an Enlightened person who both before and after E. works as a commodities
trader.  Is somebody saying that after E. there's no choice as to trades, and
their outcome?  If not, he'd be out on the street without a job. He'd better
perform! (and be very concerned about the outcome of choices)
...
Also, a case can be made as to the same component of non-doership for those in
complete ignorance of the Self.  Various components of the mind (the separate
Ego) in such a state are misidentified. However, the misidentification is only
apparent, so that such persons are only apparently deluded. OK, now we say
that E. people are not deluded, while the ignorant folk are apparently deluded.
However, whether not-deluded or apparently deludedced; these references apply
to
something relative.
...
Some relative component of an Enlightened persons says I know the Self;
whereas the other says I don't know the Self, what is IT?.
...
Both are simply assertions in the conditional realm of existence, the first
having an experiential component of Self. The bottom line is that the
ignorant person's assertion is equally the Self as conditioned existence.
...
If the color of a blue wall is really blue even though a person says it's red;
that doesn't change the blueness.  Ignorant assertions abound, apparently -
even
among the Enlightened! (thinking of certain Gurus).

Dear Dr. Lemole:  This substance may be helpful in cases of brain damage.
Article in Life Extension, Feb 2011, states ...an essential coenzyme called
pyrroloquinoline quinone or PQQ has been shown to induce mitochondrial
biogenesis - the growth of new mitochondria in aging cells.  Numerous research
articles are cited, including a team at UCLA.
Sincerely,
PS: (I don't market products and have no connection to any Co. marketing this);
but fyi, PQQ is available from Life Extension.

Subject:PQQ (pyrroloquinoline quinone) protection from brain damage
Life Extension article at http://www.tinyurl.com/4sox9t2

PQQ protects brain cells against damage following ischemia-reperfusion
injury—the inflammation and oxidative damage that result from the sudden return
of blood and nutrients tissues deprived of them by stroke.45 Given immediately
before induction of stroke in animal models, PQQ significantly reduces the size
of the damaged brain area.46 This finding implies that if a person were to
suffer a temporary loss of cerebral blood flow due to cardiac arrest, stroke,
or
trauma, that having PQQ in their body would afford considerable protection
against permanent brain damage.

Re: Statement about Parrot food (did I spell that correctly?). Anyway, this
type
of input can be of worth.  The fact that it comes from a parrot doesn't equate
(in all instances) to a devalued benefit.  In fact, the benefits of TM are
enhanced by a succession of Gurus repeating the same rituals and mantras in a
parrot-like fashion, from Guru to disciple without much change.
...
The changeless character of the rituals and mantras going back centuries or
millenia acts to enhance the Shakti level. (Gregorian chants for example).
Also, the fact that parts of the religious aspect accompanying techniques may
be
purely mythological likewise, may be irrelevant insofar as acting as a vehicle
for Shakti.

At any rate, some key words are tantric and global (i.e. the targeting
principle along with the whole picture); but this will be left to future
discussions.  For now, concentrate on enhancing your SHAKTI level, since the
Dome experience is ultimately about ME ; that is SHE; standing for SHE the
Goddess (personification of Shakti) and with SE = the SHAKTI Effect.  But even
without a Personified Goddess, Saivite Traditions (e.g. Muktananda's SYDA) and
Ramana Maharshi (Arunachala Shiva); generate HUGE amounts of Shakti if one
listens to the CD audios of Pundits in those Traditions.

Maybe they can mail to you.
Get Veda Parayana evening...has the Rudram, the most powerful Shiva chant.

Seventhray says:

Re: About Advanced Techniques fertilizers

Has it occurred to you that Vaj does not respond to these speculations, or
questions, and that by continually bringing them up you only enhance his stature
as a critic of the TM movement. When it comes to eastern schools of meditation
and spiritual paths he seems quite knowledgeable. I have no way of knowing if
his knowledge is on target or skewed. But only a few occassions have I seen
people successfully challenge him.

My reply:
Thx, very good points to consider!...but to parse:

a. Vaj doesn't respond.  That's because he's never been initiated into TMhe
can't respond with no knowledge of the subject.

b. Enhances his stature...; yea, right...as a loser.

c. when it comes to Eastern Schools he knows a lot. True, in some academic
sense; but he's still lacking in direct knowledge of TM, since his remarks on
the subject don't match people's experiences, as to a statistical
generalization. (he cherry picks the tail end of the distribution).

d. His knowledge skewed?  Ans: VERY, when it comes to TM.; although he may know
a lot about Norbu Rinpoche, a genuine Buddhist Saint imo.  (a fine feather in
Vaj's cap).

e. People rarely challenge him successfully.  I'd say his lack of direct
experience with TM speaks for itself, so he's a pushover in that regard..

As far as I can tell, Sarah Palin has four core beliefs:

1. Things go better with God

2. Yay, Alaska!

3. Let's drill that sucker.

4.  Curse you, political establishment.

Palinisms occur when Palin expresses one of these views in her
idiosyncratically
involuted syntax (It is from Alaska that we send those out to make sure that
an
eye is being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia); when she expresses
two
or more of them in combination (God's will has to be cone, in unifying people

Bushisms, which I collected for many years, often hinged on a single
grammatical
or factual eror.  Palinisms, by contrast, consist of a unitary stream of
patriotic, populist blather.  I'ts like Fox News without the punctuation.

End quote from Weisberg.

During the 1960s and early 1970s practitioners of the technique began to be

time, a number of celebrities that included The Beatles,[19] the Beach Boys,
(including singer Mike Love,[20] who became a TM teacher) and
singer-songwriterDonovan, who befriended Maharishi and put his picture on the
back cover of his A Gift from a Flower to a Garden album,  Alot of the Beatles
White Album was written in India while with the Maharishi.   The song Back In
the USRR was written there by paul but mike love said he gave Paul some ideas
on
how to make the Beatles song with The Beach Boys sound.  John Lennon said he
had
heard the Maharishi had made some improper advances towards young girls and
left. The other major factor referring to John is that when they were leaving
for India his first wife Cynthia did not make it through the crowds and that
was
the last John saw her. Out of this era the strangest thing is that it Was the
Beach Boys who took the Maharishi on tour and they went to the south of the
USA
and were boo off of stage with him. The Beach boys did write a few songs on the
TM methods throughout the years.

2010-07-26 Thread Yifu Xero
Now available from Swansons in Fargo ND.  I may get somelooks like a great
product.  $7.00 for 30 caps. (relatively expensive but that's the cheapest this
product gets.  Undergoes specialized patented processing and is imported from
Korea.

The Superior Polyphenol Antioxidant
Many Times Stronger Than Green Tea Extract
Ecklonia Cava Extract: Polyphenol / Phlorotannin Derived from Brown Algae
Ecklonia Cava Extract known as (ECE) is a standardized organic complex of
unique
aquatic molecules that come from a specific species of brown algae (Ecklonia
cava). Polyphenols are a group of chemical compounds found in plants,
recognized
by the presence of more than one phenol cluster per molecule. ECE represents a
unique category of polyphenols normally called phlorotannins. Their unique
polyphenolic structure endows them with biological activities which are not
found in ground-based plants. Various physiological activities have been
evaluated in both the individual compounds that we find in ECE and in the more
complex forms through in vitro, in vivo and clinical studies.

Millions on Research
Dr. Haengwoo Lee and his team have spent over 32 million dollars on research,
from in vitro to animal and human studies. Much of the work has been done in
Korea, and some was done at the University of Washington. Ecklonia cava has
been
found to be a very impressive therapeutic supplement for a wide variety of
health conditions.

THE SUPER ANTIOXIDANT

The potency of an antioxidant is often determined by its molecular structure,
which is made up of rings. These rings provide the antioxidant function. Most
flavonoids generally have three connected rings. ECE has up to eight
interconnected rings, making its free-radical scavenging ability 10-100 times
more powerful than other polyphenols. It is considerably stronger than green
tea
catechins.

Variable  Antioxidant Profiles of ECE
Ecklonia Cava’s strength against various free radicals is known to be highly
potent. ECE itself and its individual components have demonstrated potent
reducing power and scavenging activities against free radicals such as oxidized
LDL (bad cholesterol) and peroxynitrite (a powerful free radical that appears
to play a major role in many disease processes).

A Longer Half-Life
ECE is a distinctive polyphenol in that it has a very long half-life (remains
in
the body longer). This is because ECE is a ocean-based polyphenol that is 40%
fat-soluble. practically all other polyphenols are derived from land-based
plants and are water-soluble. The half-life of ECE is up to 12 hours, compared
to 30 minutes for water-soluble, land-based polyphenols. Because it is
fat-soluble, ECE also has the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier.

The Research of Martin Pall, Ph.D.
Peroxynitrite is the most notorious of the free radicals incriminated by Martin
Pall, Ph.D.'s groundbreaking research on multiple chemical sensitivity,
fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, post traumatic stress disorder, Gulf
War
syndrome, and fourteen other conditions. Peroxynitrite plays a main role in Dr.
Pall’s mechanism, along with NF-kappaB (an important inflammatory mediator).
ECE
has been found to reduce NF-kappaB as well.

Safety
Ecklonia Cava Extract is derived from an edible specie of brown algea that is
harvested from the waters off the coast of Japan, Korea and China. A unique
patented water extraction process is used to discard all unecessary plant
materials and stringent microbiological tests are done before it
is authenticated to be totally safe for human consumption. Thousands of people
throughout Asia have been consuming this specie of algea for centuries.  All
studies indicate that there are no toxicity at any level. Numerous clinical
tests have been done and no adverse effects have been found at any human dose
