I think I had an argument about religion with BillyG.  I came across an
article in which Sociologists tried to figure out the purpose of religion.
I'll post it later.

Scientists say that the evolutionary purpose of religion is to promote
inter-tribal co-operation.  A standardised set of beliefs, a standardised set
of rituals, customs etc etc, Cooperation between tribes becomes possible over
vast geographical distances.

Humans are the only species capable of inter-tribal co-operation.  No
other species on this planet do it.  If two groups of Chimps meet it's bloody
and savage war.  If two herds of elephants meet they fight till one group
chases away the other.

Most tribes on earth started gravitating towards a major religion because
they figured out that they could survive better, with better cooperation with
other tribes

So you're sayin' that a potential employee has
a right to believe in something that you don't
as long as he keeps it in the closet, and never

Maharishi used the tools that was available, one of them was capitalism which
He saw as a major obstacle to achieve the Age Of Enlightenment.

You're just an angry fool; you only see the flow of money and Chandas, not the
long-time strategies. You never really understood who Maharishi was or what His
Mission was anyway.

"Communism is the most intelligent political system"
-Maharishi, Germany, 1982

And now, thanks to Maharishi, capitalism as we know it is slowly leaving this
Planet. Probably for all times to come.

Perhaps Maharishi and the Movement would have served the cause of helping
capitalism "go" by not accepting any donations from money made from capitalism.

A man walked out of a casino and there, at the side of the entrance, was a
panhandler asking for money for a cup of coffee. So the man very graciously
reached in for some spare change to give the panhandler but just as he was
about to hand over the change, he said to him: "Now, you're not going to take
this money and go gambling with it, are you?"
At that, the panhandler pulled out a wad of $100 bills and said to the man:
"Oh, no, I've got gambling money."

What other deranged opinion would we expect from Shemp. Capitalism
breeds inequality, greed and corruption. It works okay in small
populations but we haven't seen that in centuries. In mass populations
people "game" the system due to their own greed. That has to be
stopped! The "free market" is a joke and doesn't work. There's a good
reason business types are the third rung of the Indian caste system.

I do think there's an art to panhandling, like anything else, in life...
One time, I was down at the southern tip of Mexico, in a small town, named:
Chetumal...
They tell me it's where Columbus first landed on the mainland, and started
intermingling with the natives...(I think they must have been talking sex,

I watched him, and saw him pull out a 'wad of bills'...
It seems he's got the art of panhandling down to an art!

I haven't noticed any more "angst and anger" in
Shemp's posts lately than before, all the way
back to alt.m.t. Look at how he replied to the
do.rkflex's nitwit insult on which Barry has
piggybacked.

He did share with us awhile ago that he was
having some emotional difficulties, but they
don't seem to have leaked into his posts on
other topics.

Am I the only person here who suspects that
Barry's thoroughly gratuitous and irrelevant
attack on Shemp here is due to frustration at
his lack of success in the fights he just
picked with Shemp over TM and atheism?

I must tell you that the line of work I'm in is ZERO affected by the recent
economic crisis. If anything, some of the products that I offer are
FLOURISHING in this type of economy (they offer guaranteed benefits that are
not subject to the whims of the marketplace, as do stock-based investments).

My personal financial "mess" is 100% my own doing and has nothing to do with
the current state of the economy; capitalism is as good and as pure as the
driven snow as it always was. If you must know, I indulged myself in
activities that were NOT conducive to making money -- which I should have been
doing -- and, as a result, I got sidetracked. And now I'm not sitting pretty.

Perhaps when I am homeless (as I well may be in the near future) I will join
you and live off your largess in Spain.

As long as you let me do TM twice a day. Otherwise I would prefer to live in
the dumpster.

Here's an interesting 'take' for you!

Now, we all know that Ronald Reagan, is the one hero, the Republicans, seem to
be obsessed with...the 'Good Ol' Days, for them...
He was a 'Very Holy Christian Man' to them...
One time, I visited the house, where he grew up, in Dixon, IL...
They had it all fixed up, real nice...looked like a typical Midwestern house,
not any different from a house in Fairfield...
Up stairs, in his parents room, they had a Bible, by the bed, opened to a page,
which I could not see
The lady that was giving the tour...her breath, was so bad, as could knock a
buzzard, off a sh_t wagon...
Anyway, this guy, passed more legislation against poor people, while attempting
to dismantle anything, resembling help for the poor...
He actually had more of a 'Corporatist Fascist attitude, and many of his
policies, were privatized by the recent Emperor Bush...

In the meantime, Reagan's son, Ron, has a very successful career, on the radio,
and I listen to him on 'Air America' , frequently...
He is an avowed atheist, and has even started an organization, to keep
religion, from being forced down our throats...
The irony is, that he is much more of a spiritual and authentic person, than
his father, could ever dream, of being...
It's almost an A.A...thing...find it yourself, become a seeker of truth, your
truth, not someone else's, truth, but one you can 'Own'...
Where there is not religion, prescribed, per se...
But the impetus to find, you 'Own Higher Power'...

So, in conclusion, I would just say, that organized religion, and the
so-called belief in 'God', is a very superficial way of looking into a person's
soul intentions...
One can profess to be 'Religious', and be a total Nazi, in reality...
One can be a fantastic actor, with lot's of experience, and have as much
authenticity, and honesty as Bernie Madoff...

You might be on to something.

Hey, as Groucho said: "I wouldn't want to be a member of a club that would have
me as a member".

Yes, I am equating "atheists" with racists, KKKer, and Nazis.

Someone who is as "in your face" with their atheism as racists, KKKers and
Nazis tend to be would be incredibly offensive to, I assume, certain pious
individuals.

It isn't for me, but it may be for some individuals.

And, yes, that can and should be a basis for discrimination.

Tell me, Barry, would you hire a KKKer who came to your place of business
everyday dressed in white sheets?

I wouldn't.

I would hire an atheist in an instance even if he wore a big, fat Tee Shirt
with the words "God sucks" if he did a good enough job. But I do not begrudge
the pious religionist who would be "having kitten" being around such an
individual 9 to 5 each day who, on that basis, did not hire that person.

No, actually, very WHITE of you, Barry.

So you're sayin' that a potential employee has
a right to believe in something that you don't
as long as he keeps it in the closet, and never
puts it in your face where you have to deal
with it, as if he believed something different
than you believe.

White of you.

2009-09-20 Thread ShempMcGurk
I have a problem lumping "atheists" in with some of the other identifiable
groups such as "whites" or "homosexuals".

One's skin color is not a choice that one makes. And, the argument can be make,
neither is one's sexual persuasion.

But "atheism" IS a life choice, just as being a "Nazi" or racist is.

Is it not appropriate in certain circumstances to judge a person based upon
such an identification? How wrong is it when deciding to be intolerant or
prejudicial against someone with whom you disagree on basic fundamentals about
life?

We as free humans do this all the time at any point during a 24-hour period.

If someone comes to my place of business (assuming I were a boss and had a
place of business) dressed up in Nazi regalia asking to fill the position of
accountant, I'm simply not going to give him the position regardless of how
great a numbers-cruncher he may be.

Is this not an "intolerance" that any of us would find understandable and
acceptable...and perhaps even admirable?

And if a religious person who places the belief in God above all others wants
to reject a person because of his atheism, should he not be alowed to do so?

Of course, if an atheist wants to conceal his atheistic beliefs from a
potential employer, he should have the right to do so.

Note that philosophical beliefs is NOT a prohibited basis of discrimination in
most charter of rights. "Religion" is but that applies more to the outward
expressions of religious belief (ie, wearing a yarmulke or hajib) than it is to
what one's inner beliefs are (which one can't discern by looking at someone).
