[FairfieldLife] 'Shiva and Ganja'

2011-12-03 Thread Robert
Ancient and modern India

Sadhu offering charas to Shiva.
The earliest known reports regarding the sacred status of cannabis in India
come from the Atharva Veda estimated to have been written sometime around 2000
- 1400 BC,[27] which mentions cannabis as one of the five sacred plants.[28]
There are three types of cannabis used in India. The first, bhang, consists of
the leaves and plant tops of the marijuana plant. It is usually consumed as an
infusion in beverage form, and varies in strength according to how much
cannabis is used in the preparation. The second, ganja, consisting of the
leaves and the plant tops, is smoked. The third, called charas or hashish,
consists of the resinous buds and/or extracted resin from the leaves of the
marijuana plant. Typically, bhang is the most commonly used form of cannabis in
religious festivals.
Cannabis or ganja is associated with worship of the Hindu deity Shiva, who is
popularly believed to like the hemp plant. Bhang is offered to Shiva images,
especially on Shivratri festival. This practice is particularly witnessed at
the temples of Benares, Baidynath and Tarakeswar.[29]
Bhang is not only offered to Shiva, but also consumed by Shaivite yogis. Charas
is smoked by some Shaivite devotees and cannabis itself is seen as a gift
(prasad, or offering) to Shiva to aid in sadhana.[30] Some of the wandering
ascetics in India known as sadhus smoke charas out of a clay chillum.
During the Indian festival of Holi, people consume bhang which contains
cannabis flowers.[29][31] According to one description, when the amrita (elixir
of life) was produced from the churning of the ocean by the devas and the
asuras, Shiva created cannabis from his own body to purify the elixir (whence,
for cannabis, the epithet angaja or body-born). Another account suggests that
the cannabis plant sprang up when a drop of the elixir dropped on the ground.
Thus, cannabis is used by sages due to association with elixir and Shiva. Wise
drinking of bhang, according to religious rites, is believed to cleanse sins,
unite one with Shiva and avoid the miseries of hell in the after-life. In
contrast, foolish drinking of bhang without rites is considered a sin.[32]
In Buddhism, the Fifth Precept is to abstain from wines, liquors and
intoxicants that cause heedlessness. Most interpretations of the Fifth Precept
would therefore include all forms of cannabis among the intoxicants that a
Buddhist should abstain from consuming. However, the Precepts are guidelines
whose purpose is to encourage a moral lifestyle rather than being strict
religious commandments, and some lay practitioners of Buddhism may choose to
consume cannabis and other mild intoxicants occasionally. Cannabis and some
other psychoactive plants are specifically prescribed in the Mahākāla Tantra
for medicinal purposes. However, Tantra is an esoteric teaching of Hinduism and
Buddhism not generally accepted by most other forms of these religions.[33]

[FairfieldLife] Shiva and Black Holes

2011-10-05 Thread John
The vedic literature has described the destructive power of nature in Shiva.
This power can be seen in the scientific existence of Black Holes where light
and matter are forever lost in the singularities of these black holes.

One could speculate that the singularity of a black hole is infinity itself,
the unified field where the waves of potentiality exist. But scientists like
Hawking have their own views of this phenomena, as shown below:

Shakti vibratesitself, through yourself, and through the Universe...

[FairfieldLife] 'Shiva Loves November'

2008-11-02 Thread Robert
November is Kartika Masa: The Auspicious Month of Lord Shiva

We are now entering the sacred month of Kartika, which is the most auspicious
month of the year for worshipping Lord Siva and obtaining His grace for good
health, mental balance, and deep meditations. During the month of Kartika, it
is very good to wake up early in the morning and do meditation, especially in
the sacred brahmi muhurta time between 3:30 and 4:30 AM.

Somavaras (Mondays) are Especially Auspicious for Worshipping Lord Siva
In particular, Somavara (Monday) is an especially auspicious day to worship
Lord Siva, and the Somavaras occurring in Kartika Masa are very important days
for spiritual practice. The dates for these highly-auspicious upcoming
Somavaras are November 3rd, 10th, 17th and 24th, 2008. In addition, the Kartika
Masa Pournami (full moon day) on November 13th is highly auspicious.

Somavara is the day of the moon, and white attracts the positive energy of the
moon, so it is very good to wear white clothes in cotton or silk on Somavara
while performing sadhana. If it is possible, practicing silence and fasting or
taking light, sattwic food will be very beneficial.

Especially on these sacred days, one can do meditation, sing bhajans, and/or
perform extra japa (mantra repetition) of one's guru mantra. One can also chant
the Siva Panchakshari Mantra (Om namah sivaya) or Siva Sakti Panchakshari
Mantra (Om hrim namah sivaya), 108, 1008 or more times. This is also an
excellent time to chant the Sri Mrutyunjaya Mantra, one of the world's oldest
and most powerful mantras, for the healing of health problems.
Those who have a Siva Lingam may wish to do puja by offering water, flowers,
vibhuti, milk, yogurt, ghee, sugar, and/or honey. The offerings can be spooned
onto the Siva Lingam (using a pure puja spoon only) while chanting Om namah
sivaya, Om hrim namah sivaya, or Sri Mrutyunjaya Mantra.

Incident in LHC sector 34

Geneva, 20 September 2008. During commissioning (without beam) of the
final LHC sector (sector 34) at high current for operation at 5 TeV,
an incident occurred at mid-day on Friday 19 September resulting in a
large helium leak into the tunnel. Preliminary investigations indicate
that the most likely cause of the problem was a faulty electrical
connection between two magnets, which probably melted at high current
leading to mechanical failure. CERN 's strict safety regulations
ensured that at no time was there any risk to people.

A full investigation is underway, but it is already clear that the
sector will have to be warmed up for repairs to take place. This
implies a minimum of two months down time for LHC operation. For the
same fault, not uncommon in a normally conducting machine, the repair
time would be a matter of days.

[FairfieldLife] Shiva sutras

2008-06-05 Thread yifuxero
from http://www.shivashakti.com

Shiva Sutra is divided into three sections and gives the core of the
inner yoga practice and philosophy not only of Kashmir Shaivism but
also of many other tantrik traditions.

First section

1. Consciousness is the being.
2. Knowledge the fetters.
3. The yoni divisions are the body of time.
4. The matrikas are the seat of knowledge.
5. Endeavour is Bhairava.
6. In the union of the circle of the Shaktis is the dissolution of
the universe.
7. The fourth enjoys and is contained in the states of waking,
dreaming and
deep sleeping.
8. Knowledge is the waking state.
9. False imagining is the dream state.
10. Want of awareness is Maya, deep sleep.
11. The triad eaten by a Lord Hero.
12. Surprise-wonderment is the place of yoga.
13. Iccha Shakti is Uma, the Virgin.
14. All things the body.
15. When the collective-observation-shock is in the heart, dream
vision
disappears.
16. From being aware of the pure essence comes the shakti of non-
duality.
17. Deliberation-pondering is being-wisdom.
18. World bliss is samadhi happiness.
19. In the abode of Shakti is creation of the body.
20. The collective abode of the elements is the universe, the
elements
separately are the shocks.
21. From the appearance of pure knowledge come the many Shaktis of
the lord of the circle (of the Shaktis).
22. By concentrating on the transcendent lake of female energy,
mantra life is obtained.

Second section

1. Consciousness the mantra.
2. Endeavour the method.
3. The science-body-being the secret of mantra.
4. In the womb state of consciousness expansion the inferior science
of the dream state.
5. In the arising of vidya, spontaneously, one may move in the void,
like Shiva.
6. By means of the guru.
7. Awakened knowledge is the circle of the letters of the alphabet.
8. The body is the sacrifical ladle.
9. Knowledge is the food.
10. From the heap of knowledge arising from seeing in the dream
state.

Third section

1. The being is consciousness.
2. Knowledge the fetters.
3. From the kalas, the thing called in non discrimination, Maya.
4. In the body the dissolution of the kalas.
5. The nadi dissolution is the victory over the elements, freedom
from the elements, separation of the elements.
6. Siddhi from the appearance of delusion.
7. The victory over delusion is the victory of spontaneous knowledge,
which is of endless extent.
8. From the waking state, the world is a ray.
9. The essence is the dancer.
10. The inner essence is the theatre stage.
11. The sense organs are the audience.
12. Insight from will is the pure siddhi.
13. Accomplishment means transformation into independence.
14. As there, so elsewhere.
15. Attention is the bija.
16. Asana is the happiness of immersion in Shakti.
17. One's own measure is the measure suitable for measuring, giving
guidance.
18. Imperishable knowledge means destruction of births.
19. In the Ka-series are Maheshvari and so forth, the beast-mothers.
20. Pour the fourth in the three like oil diffusing in water.
21. One should enter, immersed, by one's own consciousness.
22. Equally the practice of breath produces a similar sight.
23. In the centre, emanating the lower.
24. In the measure of one's own trust in the abode is this prevented
again from appearing.
25. One knows equality with Shiva.
26. The existence of the body becomes a religious vow.
27. Conversation is mantra recitation.
28. The act of offering is being-wisdom.
29. Whosoever is in this state is the means of knowledge.
30. The universe becomes an aggregate of his Shaktis.
31. Both maintenance and dissolution.
32. Though subject to the cyclic law, one is not excluded from self
experience.
33. Happiness and sadness become external.
34. Set free from that, one is complete.
35. The being of action is a heap of delusion.
36. Sundering the internal stream proceeding from action.
37. The creative Shakti from one's own spirit-perception-feeling.
38. The primordial animating one with three parts.
39. Observation remaining, the body creates action externally.
40. From wanting external actions arises the collective being.
41. When really reaching that, through its destruction, the embodied
being is destroyed.
42. When the element-sheaths are released, at that time one becomes
supreme and equal to the lord.
43. The inherent union of breath.
44. What is meant by restraint in the centre of the brow? The left
and right in the central channel.
45. Again and again comes all encompassing awareness.

Notes
1. The Fourth, i.e. Shiva, with

Vibhuuti-yoga(spreading of the effect of ones yogic practises??)of the yogi is shown that way. Here's Singh's translation and comment, based on the teaching of Sw. Lakshman Joo:"The word "loka" has to be construed in two senses 1) that which is perceived, i.e. the multitude of objects, 2) he who perceives i.e. the class of subjects. Though this distinction of subject and object is evident in the world, the yogi experiences a unique delight of I-consciousness which results from his mindfulness of his repose in the state of a knower in every case. This is his samahdhi-sukha, i.e. this is his delight of continuous awareness of knowership. This has been referred to in the following verse of Vijnanabhattaraka:"The consciousness of object and subject is common to all the embodied ones. The Yogis have, however, this distinction that they are mindful of this relation." (verse 106)"One should regard the whole world or his own body as full of the delight inherent in his Self. Simultaneously (with his world-view), he will find himself full of the highest delight which is simply due to the ambrosia (i.e. the spiritual delight) welling up in his Self." (verse 65)The same idea has been brought out in the following verse in Spandakarika."This is the acquisition of ambrosia (i.e. immortality ["ambroisa therefore equals "amRta"]). This is the veritable seizure of the Self. This constitutes the diksha for Nirvana, and this confers on oneself the realization of one's identity with Shiva." (ii, 7)(Now Ksemaraja gives a further interpretation of the sutra by arranging Samadhisukham lokanandah i.e. the continuous delight of knowership of the yogi infuses delight into people also)."Moreover, the delight of knowership which the yogi experiences by continuous respose and delight within himself ends in making his delight manifest among these people also who carefully observe him in that state (tat tradrsam). This happens by the process of transmission of delight. This is quite in agreement with the quotation given before from Candrajnana."The verse implying the ME is in the YS.

[FairfieldLife] Shiva Sutras

2006-02-17 Thread Rick Archer
Title: Shiva Sutras

Shiva Sutras
Translated by Sage Vasugupta

First Awakening

1. Universal Consciousness is one's own nature.

(Swami Lakshmanjoo: Supreme consciousness is the reality of everything.)

2. Knowing the individual consciousness as one's own nature and not knowing
the Universal Consciousness as one's own nature is bondage.

(Swami Lakshmanjoo: Knowing differentiatedly is bondage and not knowing un-
differentiatedly is bondage.)

3. Differentiated perception and the field of individual activities are also
bondage.

[Editor's note: #2 #3 seem to refer to rishi, devatta, and chhandas in
their non-samhita, differentiated, individual state.]

(Swami Lakshmanjoo: Mayiyamala and karmamala are also bondage.)

[Mayiyamala = yonivargah, differentiated knowledge, intellectual dis-
crimination between pairs of opposites.
Karmamala = kalashariram, the embodiment of action as separate action.]

4. This threefold bondage is attributable to and commanded by the Universal
Mother while She remains unknown. Hence the field of ignorance comes into ex-
istence through Her and not through any other agency.

(Swami Lakshmanjoo: The Universal Mother commands this triple knowledge.)

5. To get rid of this triple bondage, such effort constitutes (the) means,
which is identical with Bhairava [Lord Shiva].

(Swami Lakshmanjoo: That effort, the flashing forth of active awareness
that instantaneously makes universal consciousness shine, is Bhairava.)

6. With deep contemplation on the wheel of energies, the whole differen-
tiated universe comes to an end.

[Editor: Transcendental Consciousness.]

(Swami Lakshmanjoo: By establishing and meditating on the wheel of energies
the differentiated universe comes to an end.)

7. Such a yogi, who has accomplished this stage, experiences Turiya (Tran-
scendental God Consciousness) in the other three states also - jagrat (wake-
fulness), swapna (dream) and sushupti (deep sleep).

[Editor: Cosmic Consciousness.]

(Swami Lakshmanjoo: Such a heroic yogi experiences the expansive state of
turya in the differentiated states of waking, dreaming, and deep sleep.)

8. Common knowledge (arising out of differentiation) constitutes jagrat
(wakefulness).

(Swami Lakshmanjoo: External organic knowledge constitutes the waking state.)

9. Individual differentiated knowledge in the recess of one's own mind is
swapna (dream).

(Swami Lakshmanjoo: Internal perceptions and thoughts comprise the dream-
ing state.)

10. Loss of discrimination in the field of unawareness is sushupti (deep
sleep).

(Swami Lakshmanjoo: Forgetfulness and the negation of awareness is the
dreamless state or maya.)

11. The one who has digested (assimilated) all these three states in God
Consciousness (Turiya) is the Lord of heroes.

[Editor: Cosmic Consciousness.]

(Swami Lakshmanjoo: The one who enjoys the oneness of the three states -
waking, dreaming, and deep sleep - in turiya, becomes the master of all or-
ganic energies.)

12. The yogic powers here (in the state of Being) comprise indescribable as-
tonishment (wonder).

[Editor: practice of the siddhis.]

(Swami Lakshmanjoo: The predominant sign of such a yogi is joy-filled
amazement.)

13. For such a yogi, any desire is identical with the Supreme Energy (Parvati)
of Lord Shiva and hence his desire cannot be checked by any power.

[Editor: end of the siddhis - omnipotence.]

(Swami Lakshmanjoo: His will is the energy of Lord Shiva and it is called
uma and kumari - or -
For such a yogi hiss will is one with the energy of Lord Shiva,
unobstructable, completely independent, always given to play.)

14. For such a yogi, even the body becomes an extraneous object, or the
totality of extraneous objects is (constitutes) his own universal body.

[Editor: God Consciousness.]

(Swami Lakshmanjoo: This entire perceived world is his own self - or -
His own body is just like an object to him.)

15. By establishing one's mind in the heart - the Universal Consciousness -
the whole world of perception appears as one's own nature.

[Editor: Unity Consciousness.]

(Swami Lakshmanjoo: When his thoughts are diverted to the center of God
consciousness, then he feels the existence of God consciousness in oneness
in the objective world and in the world of negation.)

16. Or, by establishing uninterrupted awareness of pure supreme Nature, the
energy of Shiva is experienced.

(Swami Lakshmanjoo: Or by aiming at the pure element of Shiva he possesses
Shiva's unlimited energy.)

17. For such a realized soul, any ordinary thought becomes the means of
realizing one's own Self.

[Editor: The growth of Brahman. See last sukta of Rig Veda - By virtue
of unitedness, and by means of that which remains to be united, I perform
action to generate Wholeness of life.]

(Swami Lakshmanjoo: Any inference of such a yogi is knowledge of his own
real self.)

18. His being in the ecstatic state of samadhi bestows bliss and happiness to
the whole humanity or the totality of enjoyment in the universe

Siddhis are due to a veil (AvaraNa) drawn by ignorance (mohA).

Slightly different slant:from Swami Lakshmanjoo
6. Such powers appear only when the veil of ignorance falls in the way
of en-tering into pure God Consciousness.

7. By obtaining victory over such an illusion of cosmic powers and by
enjoying the state of limitless being, the pure and supreme knowledge
manifests.

[FairfieldLife] Shiva-suutra of the day?

2005-12-11 Thread cardemaister

SS I 7:

jaagratsvapnasuSuptabhede turyaabhogasaMbhavaH
(jaagrat; svapna; suSupta-bhede turya-aabhoga-saMbhavaH)

This is my own translation:

In the gap (bhede) [between] waking (jaagrat),
dreaming (svapna) [and] deep sleep (suSupta)
is born (saMbhavaH = birth) enjoyment (aabhoga,
also e.g. fullness) of the Transcendental Consciousness
(turya = fourth).

Does that make any sense?

Does that make any sense? The entire first section of the Shiva-sutra describes Shambhava upaya--the yoga of spontaneous manifestation of the I-consciousness of Shiva, and the sudden emergence of the individual experience "Shivoham" (or "udyamo bhairava" I:5), "I am Shiva". It is the "highest" (read: most direct) of all three upayas in this agama. This means that this presence of spontaneous I-consciousness of Shiva is a witness which runs continuously and uninterruptedly through all three states of consciousness. This is not mere "saksi" (witness-consciousness) but Ishvara-Saksi -- God-witness. In fact, it's not the same witness as in Shankara at all, it is vimarsha (world-mirror) which is filled with the bhoga (ecstasy) of turiya.Abhoga = Camatkara

[FairfieldLife] Shiva Yagya in Varanasi

2005-05-30 Thread benjaminccollins
I almost hesitate to post this in anticipation of the criticism that
will no doubt be soon heading my way...but...

my little yagya group is sending our priest to Varanasi (Benares) to
perform 3 days of Shiva yagyas to honor our ancestors, to ensure (or
increase the liklihood of) our enlightenment, and to placate Saturn a
bit. He will be there for 3 days and will be working with 4 local
priests to perform yagyas for about 6 hours each day.

Even if you aren't into yagyas, you can see some nice photos on the
web site as well as some good chanting in MP3 format which you are
welcome to download and distribute as you wish.

Regards,
Ben Collins

PS. In anticipation of some reactions; Our priests are trained at the
Shankaracharya's ashram in Kanchipuram. Our chief priest, Seetharam
has been my friend for over 12 years. He's a favorite of Sri Sri Ravi
Shankar and Karuna Ma. who know him well. We've been doing yagyas
regularly for about 8 years now. Yes, they work for lots of people,
particularly when repeated over time. No, they don't work for
everyone. No, I don't know how to predict when they will work and
when not. Yes, they are the same as MMY yagyas, but you decide how
much it matters if the priests meditate. Our priests don't do TM but
they are pretty rockin' dudes.
