While it's there, the cursor won't do much, and I haven't been able to figure out any way to get rid of the thing except excessive reloading. Anybody know what this is about, and how to avoid it? It's getting to be a real nuisance. Thanks. Isn't it the equivalent of the little clock, indicating that Safari is busy?

It's getting to be a real nuisance. Thanks. Not sure, but have you considered trying the Safari 4.0 beta? It's excellent and the fastest browser I've used. Certainly faster than Firefox. If you have Time Machine installed, use Time Machine to reinstall it fresh. It takes a couple of seconds, and it will act like a new install.
