Dan Bern. If you like literate lyrics and a good wit set to music, he's definitely worth checking out. His "God Said No" from his CD Drean of a New American Language give some nice insight into what might happen if MMY tried to take Rick's suggestion of going back 40 years, or 30. The problem goes back to the Constitution. In my state of Massachusetts, the democrat always easily wins all of the state's electoral votes. I believe there is only once instance in my lifetime where that did not happen, when Reagan carried the vote. This takes away the incentive for republicans to vote in this state, and is a factor in more states than not. --- TurquoiseB <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > --- In FairfieldLife@yahoogroups.com, Rick Archer > <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > > > on 9/10/06 10:13 AM, nablus108 at [EMAIL PROTECTED] > wrote: > > > > > >Obviously we do; you elected this crazy nitwit > not once but twice ! > > > > No we didn¹t. I had thought you were suggesting in it that American voters *were* able to tell fact from fiction, contrary to what you had said in these quotes. See my later post for why I misunderstood. The "fiction" I thought I was highlighting was what I erroneously assumed you were passing off as your opinion in the recent post. > And if you were honest, Judy, you'd admit that the > reason that you want to censor this miniseries I don't want to "censor" it, as I've already pointed out numerous times. > is that you think the American population is > stupid, too. That's absolutely correct, nor have I ever suggested otherwise. So we have another fiction from you: that I've been dishonest about why I don't want it shown as currently planned. > Where we're disagreed is in what to do about > this. You want to control the things that they > see and hear on television so that they don't > get any "wrong" ideas and vote the wrong way. > Excuse me, but isn't that the way the people > you want to vote out of office think and act? As I said in my later post, the solution I would prefer is for it to be shown exactly as it is, as scheduled, but with a *rebuttal* period afterward that presents the facts. That would accomplish two things: (1) make people *aware* of the facts, and (2) expose the propensity of the right to lie, as it has in this film. > Me, I think that if the Left wants to shift > America to what they consider more positive > ways of living and acting, they should make a > few TV movies themselves showcasing those > values and presenting them as options. But the trick, of course, would be to get them on the air. > But ferchrissakes they should stop whining so > much when the Right whups their asses by being > more media-savvy that they are. > For once, Bob and I are in perfect agreement. > The rest of the world perceives George W. > Bush -- in my opinion correctly -- as the > almost perfect embodiment of the collective > consciousness of the American people. Obviously we do; you elected this crazy nitwit not once but twice ! On the other hand, Bob Brigante posted a beautiful post here some days ago where some writer stated that the american people are perhaps stupid, but they are not bad people. I agree on that. On my travels in the USA I have met countless intelligent, creative and good people. I think the american people has been manipulated to think that this Bush fellow is good for them, and somehow they belived it. The truth ofcourse is that this administration is a catastrophy for America. They are sowing seeds that the american people has to pay, sooner rather than later. It seems like this time is now. Ordinary citicens pay the price. Today, more american soliders have been killed in Iraq than during 7/11 - and it will not stop, it will just continue and continue and continue untill the americans have had enough and hit the streets in demonstrations. The People, ordinary folks have power, they just have to show it, act ! "Chaos reigns, likewise, in the political sphere. The nations are led by groups dedicated to the past, unable to see that their methods apply no longer to the needs of today and tomorrow. Blindfolded and arrogant, they strut the stage of life like out-of-date actors, unsure of their direction or their lines. The door marked EXIT looms large for these destructive usurpers of power." I may have missed something. Which of these opinions of mine do you think are fiction? :-) For the record, I stand behind every one of them. I'm not sure what the final percentages in the election were, but I doubt I was that far off. Around 40% of Americans who could vote don't. In my opinion -- given the impact that an American presidential election has on them and on the entire world -- the only excuse for that is a near-terminal case of stupidity. And if you were honest, Judy, you'd admit that the reason that you want to censor this miniseries is that you think the American population is stupid, too. If you didn't think that, there would be *no reason* to try to prevent them from seeing a stupid revisionist-history mockumentary just before an election. I mean, your whole rationale for wanting the film not to be shown before the election is that *you* think the people are too stupid to realize they're being lied to, and will be tempted to vote "the wrong way" in the next election. I agree with you. We're agreed. An ENORMOUS percentage of Americans are so stupid they'd believe that a TV mockumentary is reality and vote accordingly. They're dolts. Homer Fucking Simpson is smarter than the average American voter. Where we're disagreed is in what to do about this. You want to control the things that they see and hear on television so that they don't get any "wrong" ideas and vote the wrong way. Excuse me, but isn't that the way the people you want to vote out of office think and act? Me, I think that if the Left wants to shift America to what they consider more positive ways of living and acting, they should make a few TV movies themselves showcasing those values and presenting them as options. But ferchrissakes they should stop whining so much when the Right whups their asses by being more media-savvy that they are. Reading this again, I think I may have misunderstood what Barry meant. For once he's being consistent; he's suggesting that American voters *are not* intelligent enough to tell fact from fiction. I misunderstood because this makes no sense as a reason for my wanting to "ban" the film. Actually I *don't* want to "ban" it and would fight any such action tooth and nail. There are other alternatives, which I'll get to in a minute. Barry's purported reason makes no sense because the result of the film airing as scheduled could very well be that the Republicans would maintain their hold on Congress. Which would certainly demonstrate that American voters are too stupid to tell fact from fiction, but at an unacceptable cost. Apparently Barry would actually *like* the Republicans to continue to control Congress, just for the sake of proving that American voters are stupid. I find that mind-boggling. In any case, here are some alternatives that do not involve "banning" the film: -- Postpone the showing until after the election, preferably putting it on a pay-cable channel, where it will more clearly be perceived as "entertainment" rather than as a factual presentation. -- Show it as scheduled, but fix the falsehoods in the film first (ABC is said to be fixing *some* of them, but to what extent is uncertain). -- Show it as scheduled, but followed by a response from representatives of those who are falsely portrayed in the film, or from members of the 9/11 commission, documenting the inaccuracies. (This last would be my preference; I don't think ABC can adequately fix the falsehoods without reshooting a good deal of the film, although if they'd be willing to do that and show the film later, that might be the ideal solution. On the other hand, showing it as it is, followed by a response, might have the effect of waking some people up to the propensity of the right wing to lie.) The problem is not so much that American voters are too stupid to tell fact from fiction as that they aren't *aware* of the facts to begin with. If all they're aware of is what the film tells them, that *is* what the facts are, as far as they know. What Barry's so upset about is that I repeatedly expose *his* fictions. For example, here's a small sampling of Barry's opinion of about the intelligence of American voters. >From alt.m.t: November 3, 2004 In reality, [Bush] got 71% [of Americans] -- the 31% who were stupid enough to vote for him and the 40% who were too stupid to even vote. November 3, 2004 You know what you're pissed off about, Judy? I mean besides the astounding stupidity of America, and the consummate wussiness of John Kerry? November 4, 2004 But that's Judy...still trying to make excuses for a populace that is so brainwashed or so brain-dead that 40% of them...don't even bother to vote. >From FFL: June 3, 2005 The US is not my country any more. And, far from hating it, I love it dearly and wish it would get over this fit of insufferable ego and stupidity and ignorance and hatred and greed it's going through. October 8, 2005 > Bush happened because the American people > are, on average, as stupid as he is. For once, Bob and I are in perfect agreement. The rest of the world perceives George W. Bush -- in my opinion correctly -- as the almost perfect embodiment of the collective consciousness of the American people.
