Go to www.downloads.com, run by CNET, and look for Avast Antivirus, free
edition. I think it runs for a year before wanting you to pay for it.
After a year, download COMODO Antivirus - also free, but a lot bigger than
Avast.

Note: Navigate the screens on downloads.com carefully - It is a great site, but
has a lot of ads masquerading as interface.

Personally, I use the freebie version of Avast:

http://www.avast.com/index

I'm very happy with it, but it doesn't mean I'm free to be a complete idiot.
When I check my Spamcop spam folder and see that there's an email with a file
attachment, I often release it just to see if Avast catches it. Sometimes it
lets it come through, at which point, I save the file in a special folder and
run a virus scan on the file every day until Avast catches it. It can take a
day or two until they update their virus definitions to detect it.

Any time I download freeware, I always do a scan on it with this very useful
site:

http://www.virustotal.com/

They scan the file with just about every antivirus program in existence. If
they declare downloaded freeware to be free of malware, I trust them. I also
run those saved virus attachments by that site, and it is interesting to see
which antivirus programs are right on top of the newest infections; Norton and
Kaspersky are two that are pretty consistent in catching them, but once in a
while, no one catches it.

I used free AVG for awhile but they seem to start noticing if you are
running it on multiple computers. Then they bug you to buy. I also
used their free Android version but use Lookout now which if any asshat
decides he wants to swipe my phone can turn on the GPS and locate it.

Prior to AVG I used the Computer Associates anti-virus because friends
working at Microsoft said that Microsoft used it and gave CA feedback to
make it work better and be unobtrusive. Originally it was cheap but
their licensing screwball so that's when I went to AVG. Then after they
started bugging me figured to just let Microsoft do the work because
it's due to them we need an anti-virus in the first place. So I use
their Security Essentials which is free and very unobtrusive.

Of course this machine is Linux and really you don't need anti-virus for
it but I do have KlamAV installed. Sometimes I want to see if there are
any viruses in the Thunderbird junk folder even though they won't run on
Linux. I do everything I can on Linux and only use my Windows machines
if I have too.

AVG Anti-Virus 2013 is only free for the first 30 days.

MS Security Essentials will work fine for ordinary
real-time protection but for greater security along with
malware removal, Malwarebytes is the free AV software
used and recommended by many system techies.

Since becoming tired of the intrusiveness and non-
user-friendliness of Norton and the ineffectiveness
of Symantec and other Big Name anti-virus programs,
I tried the free version of AVG. I have been using
it now for over a decade, and it has never failed
to detect and shoot dead in its tracks any virus
or spamware infestation that came my way.

Factor into this that I am what Bhairitu calls an
eyepatch kinda guy, and that I tend to hang out
in cafes and thus often use non-secure Wifi sources,
and that is high praise indeed. I *love* AVG. I
suspect that its cost-money versions are even better
than their free version, but I have never needed them.

Don't know if they have a Win8 version, but I suspect
  they do.

Re: [FairfieldLife] Re: Free mal-spy-ware anti virus etc

2013-08-11 Thread Bhairitu
I don't visit many websites except for documentation of known software
so minimal protection is just fine on my Windows machines. There is an
elitism amongst techies that one must have the latest, greatest and the
mostest which means that some companies make a lot of money off that
'tude. And I read a fair amount of tech sites where they clue hackers
into security flaws long before the hackers know they are there. :-(

I think we should shoot virus and malware writers on PPV.

 FYI -

AVG Anti-Virus 2013 is only free for the first 30 days.

MS Security Essentials will work fine for ordinary
real-time protection but for greater security along with
malware removal, Malwarebytes is the free AV software
used and recommended by many system techies.

Hey, what about Microsoft Security Essentials! Free, and hasn't let

 down in several years.

I did AVG as well, and had no problems. But it always seemed like
 they
put extra steps in the way of getting the free version after a while,
and steered you to the fee based program.

What's the best programme you use ? The new pc wants
to install Norton and fill the pocket of that gun-
touting fellow, but surely there must be some free
and good stuff out there ?

PS: must work with the WIN8, the worst blingbling
shoppingmall pretending to be an operating-system
 on the planet !

Any suggestions you might have are very welcome !
Nabby, I'm pretty sure you'll interpret this as
me being paid by the CIA or the Dalai Lama or both
to mislead you :-), but it's real free advice, and
 worth every penny.
