I am sure (as Judy says) I *do* overuse the *lol*s and the :-)s, so
that I may seem insincere, and so you can't tell here when I am
specifically laughing at (and with) what you say. But what can I say?
In the flesh I do smile and laugh most of the time, and my words just

It's a problem. I share your frustration with it
being misunderstood sometimes. Many people are
so bloody SERIOUS that they just can't get
someone who isn't, and who is laughing much of
the time. So you try to use emoticons to get
the point across, and it has the opposite effect,
and they get even more uptight. Go figure.

I can't speak for Rory, but I *NEVER* use smileys

No, Barry, it doesn't make anybody uptight,
despite your fondest wishes. What it does is
make *you* look phony.

It's like a standup comic who laughs at his own

stay deadpan.

If you can't get your humor across without smileys,
it just wasn't very funny to begin with.

I've often found that people who rarely laugh

are pretending to do so. I'm pretty sure Rory
has run into the same thing. It's a burden,
but we'll somehow survive, and laugh about *it*

otherwise may sound far heavier and more solemn than is my intent.

Actually they have exactly the opposite effect.
They call attention to the heaviness because
 they're so discordant with it.

There is no heaviness. There is only your
perception of lightness as heavy. Not
everyone sees things that way.

 They make it
seem as though the heaviness is *so* heavy
that you feel you have to disguise it or put
protective padding around it, whereas a bit of
 straightforward, up-front heaviness wouldn't
tend to stand out the same way and would just
be taken as a matter of course.

Your call, of course, but to be honest you
are not exactly someone I would count on

seen so little of it coming from you over
the years that I have my doubts about your
ability to recognize it in others.

Maybe, but you haven't found that *here*, because
you have no way of knowing how much folks laugh in
other venues. Here you see only a very narrow
slice of an individual's personality.

Also see my post to Akasha with regard to some of

You didn't even get that Lama Ole was

Vaj seems to take the single comment I asked
him about pretty seriously.

In any case, there's a difference between taking
a humorous tone when discussing something one
is very serious about, and just being funny.
Ole was pretty obviously doing the former, not
the latter.

You seem to think that couching an insult in
humorous terms, or putting a smiley after it,
somehow automatically makes it not an insult,
but of course that's not the case.

Actually I don't believe you *do* think this. I
think you use humorous tone and smileys when
you're being insulting because you think it
gives you plausible deniability.

It doesn't.

What services were you envisioning, exactly?

My flash connections, aka humor, appear quite different from yours
these days. Its funny to have to explain ones jokes. Pretentious
sounding as it is, though meant on a much more casual and lower plane,
its like explaining art. Or music (dylan not explaining his lyrics to
reporters.)

Ok let me try.

1) I linked an article with the above post, about married woment
losing interest in sex.

2) I titled the post Full Monty Hotline -- which tied to earlier jokes.

3) You have been trying be helpful to others on the list, perhaps
onerously in the last week, by offering spiritual guidance services.

4) Thus, I connected the dots. Translation: Rory, since you want to
be helpful, and since your offers of spiritual guidance are being
repeatedly rebuffed here, perhaps you might try both a new specialty
and a new target market: you could offer full monte dance shows to
married women to respark their interest in sex. yuk yuk.

Actually its quite a compliment. Many men on this list doing such I am
sure would drive many women to reject sex forever.

Yes, they do in some cases, though in others we appear quite in

Yes it is :-)

Right! Fortunately you have more compassion for our densities than
Dylan did :-)

Ah, OK, I was seeing my posts a little differently -- more like
acquainting them (or anyone else who may be reading these posts, now
or whenever) with some techniques they might try, on their own or if
necessary with some guide: probably not here on FFL, and probably
not with me, but somewhere and with someone who felt safe. However,
it did take me a rather *long* while to see that both I and my
immediate correspondent were quite satisfied with her apparent
dissatisfaction ... though I suspect that this diagnosis probably
fails to meet with her satisfaction also :-)

Well, many thanks for the compliment, Akasha, but I am not at all
sure that my efforts would not do the same -- that is, even if I
could somehow convince myself and my wife that this was indeed my
perfect dharma in this moment :-)

Yes, I got it, my friend! I appreciate it! :-D

I am sure (as Judy says) I *do* overuse the *lol*s and the :-)s, so
that I may seem insincere, and so you can't tell here when I am
specifically laughing at (and with) what you say. But what can I say?
In the flesh I do smile and laugh most of the time, and my words just
seem so flat and serious here without the accompanying cues!
:-)

The overuse just gets old, like somebody who never

The real problem is when the lols and smiley faces
don't seem to belong to what you're actually saying.

Understandable, and understood. I just don't much feel like attempting
to vary in print what is in truth essentially unchanging. Truthfully,
to convey my feeling more accurately, I would replace *every* period
with a :-). Perhaps you would find my in-the-flesh personality
similarly old and unvarying; I don't know ^ ^ :-)

The real problem is when the lols and smiley faces

Yes, I understand how you feel that this often makes me look
insincere. That is when (IMO) they would often appear to be
*especially* useful, as they are intended to lighten up what otherwise
may sound far heavier and more solemn than is my intent. I am
intensely light-hearted, and even in the midst of deep feeling mean
almost nothing as rigidly or solemnly black-and-white as it looks in
print, even this statement. (End of message; smiley face coming up a
few lines below; continue reading at your own risk)

:-)

Actually they have exactly the opposite effect.
They call attention to the heaviness because
they're so discordant with it. They make it
seem as though the heaviness is *so* heavy
that you feel you have to disguise it or put
protective padding around it, whereas a bit of
straightforward, up-front heaviness wouldn't
tend to stand out the same way and would just
be taken as a matter of course.
