Doumbeks are pretty cool drums. I started hand
drumming on a medium sized djembe. It was cool to
listen to and learn African polyrhythms (3 against 2,
baby!). Then I bought a doumbek and realized that that
was my drum. I've taken lesson on and off from a local
professional doumbek player for a

I have a synthetic head on mine too. I only use it as a small drum to
jam with friends inside so I never noticed the limitation with the
lack of tuning. I love the sound when you put your hand inside the
drum and pull it out as you strike it. Booowwwooomp! A little like

Thanks Curtis. I've got a small clay doumbek too, but
it only sounds good inside here in south Florida
because of all the humidity. Unlike a djembe, there's
no way to tighten a natural head on a doumbek. I
mostly use an Alexandrian, synthetic head doumbek.
