Re: [FairfieldLife] Re: Tabla finger exercises

Thanks Curtis. I've got a small clay doumbek too, but
it only sounds good inside here in south Florida
because of all the humidity. Unlike a djembe, there's
no way to tighten a natural head on a doumbek. I
mostly use an Alexandrian, synthetic head doumbek.

No exercises independent of the tabla. But there
 are
   basic simple tabla
rhythms that should be practiced repetitively to
   build strength and
   technique.

[FairfieldLife] Re: Tabla finger exercises

2006-06-30 Thread curtisdeltablues
Peter,

I have a synthetic head on mine too. I only use it as a small drum to
jam with friends inside so I never noticed the limitation with the
lack of tuning. I love the sound when you put your hand inside the
drum and pull it out as you strike it. Booowwwooomp! A little like
the big tabla drum.

Re: [FairfieldLife] Re: Tabla finger exercises

2006-06-30 Thread Peter
Doumbeks are pretty cool drums. I started hand
drumming on a medium sized djembe. It was cool to
listen to and learn African polyrhythms (3 against 2,
baby!). Then I bought a doumbek and realized that that
was my drum. I've taken lesson on and off from a local
professional doumbek player for about a year. Two
weekends ago I went up to Melbourne, Florida for a
great workshop with Raquy Danziger who is an amazing
player (www.raquy.com). It's interersting how
traditional doumbek rhythms have no polyrhythms. But
most contemporary players integrate them.

...don't know if this will interest you but around 1969 when I was
about 14 my brother took me to see Ravi Shankar and his tabla player
(and a woman playing another instrument) in Montreal's Place des
Arts. The thing I remember about the performance was that in the
middle of it Shankar gave a 15-minute lecture about the 3 instruments
and he did it all in fluent French.
