What Java should be installed?

When I go to java.com, it tells me I don't have the "recommended" version of Java installed. Java applets seem to run OK within firefox. It appears that F12 uses openjdk at version 1.6.0. Is is a problem to be behind the java.com version of 6.17 or is the openjdk version functionally equivalent
