To Lance: Re: Ember update

2007-04-23 Thread wendy
Hi Lance,

It sounds like you had some mixed news at the vets,
some good, some bad. I think it's fantastic that
Ember is not anemic. I would much rather be dealing
with WBC issues than RBC issues, since low WBC could
be so many different things, some easily corrected. I
don't know of any vets who have had VO experience, but
you might post that as the subject heading if you
don't get good response to this post. I think you are
doing exactly the right thing by doing your own
research and looking to talk with people who have
experience with the VO. I think people from the UK
have an advantage on us when it comes to that. I
could cross post this if you'd like me to on the
hyperT site I belong to. There are a lot of UK
members there that might be able to help you out or
cross post elsewhere. You might also consider calling
or writing to one of the veterinary colleges about
this. I wrote Dr. August at Texas AM University
concerning the overdosing of newly diagnosed
hyperthyroid kitties back in February, and he called
me. He's over feline internal medicine, very active
in the veterinary community, a very nice man, and
might be able to point you in the right direction. I
had to write to him because they would not put me
through to his voicemail when I called because I was
not a student or a vet. It was a bit frustrating, but
since I'm a better writer than speaker, it probably
worked out better.

Keep us posted on Ember. I bet she will gain her
weight back in no time!
:)

Re: Cassidy's IFA is positive

2007-04-23 Thread wendy
Hey Melissa,

This is so strange. I just emailed you off-list about
Cassidy's results. I'm really sorry he tested
positive. You might consider calling BF instead of
emailing. It might be quicker. I have the number if
you need it.

I was thinking the other day about tornadoes. We've
had several here recently. We even had one touch down
just south of our house in our little community when I
was in San Antonio week before last! I started
thinking if another one comes, how am I going to get 7
cats, 3 large dogs, my 250 lb. husband, and myself
into our small bathroom, AND put a mattress over us
all?!!! I don't even think a mattress would fit in
that small bathroom, much less all of us! We don't
even have 7 cat carriers. 3 at the most, so that
would be really interesting. We'd have to have
carriers because of the dogs, so I'm guessing I need
to pick up a few more just to be safe. I so wish we
had a tornado shelter. Maybe I'll get out there with
one of my larger cooking spoons and start
digging...lol.

Survey on IFA's turning negative

2007-04-23 Thread wendy
Hey guys,

Survey question: Have any of you ever had a cat that
tested positive on the IFA eventually test negative at
a later date? I called and spoke with Joanie at Best
Friends, the woman who is normally at Casa de Calmar.
I asked her about testing procedures, because I was
considering having Toshie retested to see if she was
still positive so I could possibly adopt her. Joanie
told me that they have had cats that have arrived at
Best Friends that subsequently sero-converted (what we
refer to as 'throwing the virus'). She said that if a
cat tests positive on Elisa but negative on IFA, that
they do have a chance to sero-convert. They do not
place these cats in Casa de Calmar, the FeLV unit, nor
do they mix them with any other cats, as they can
possibly infect others or their own sero-conversion
can be affected by
further exposure to FeLV. As long as they keep
testing positive on Elisa but negative on IFA, they
are tested every six weeks until they get a negative
or positive IFA. If negative, they are mixed with the
general population and put up for adoption. If
positive, the virus is already in their bone marrow,
which means to the veterinary community that they can
never sero-convert, and they are then placed in Casa
de Calmar.

Thus, my question above. I am wondering if these
testing guidelines hold true 100% of the time.

Thanks,
:)

Not at all. They do adopt out FeLV babies and I think
its great! Thanks for pointing this out since my post
was a bit misleading-sorry about that. Joanie did say
that unfortunately, they usually do have openings at
Casa de Calmar because of losses. She said that's the
only place that's like that at BF.

Re: Survey on IFA's turning negative

2007-04-23 Thread PEC2851
I don't know how or if this will address your question but at the sanctuary
I was involved w/ we always used Elisa first.
Then, If we got positive results on Elisa, we always retested w/ IFA.
And, any cat in question was always kept in isolation no matter what the
IFA results were. And, then, we always re-tested, again, w/ IFA.
We always believed IFA to be the most accurate, and, yes, costly..
If the 2nd IFA came back +, then we did home those babies in our Felv
area[s]. If negative, baby was put up for adoption [w/ ALL vet history given].
And no matter what the results were, I'm just happy those babies had a home
for life. Be it adoption or life at the farm...
Don't know if this helps any, but just wanted to share my history w/ IFA
testing

Cranberry Supplement

2007-04-23 Thread Lora
The Super Wal-mart Center where I used purchase my
Spring Valley 475 mg of Natural Whole Herb Cranberry
Fruit capsules has been discontinued.

I need to find an equal replacement.

Where to you buy your Cranberry supplements at?

I need Cranberry in a capsule form and withOUT
additinal vitamins/supplements mixed in i.e. vitamin
C, vitamin E, Blueberry, etc.

I paid $9.96 for 250 capsules.

I have already checked out Puritan's Pride for
Cranberry and they do not offer a 100% pure Cranberry
capsule. All of their Cranberry produts are mixed with
other vitamins and/or supplements.

Any ideas?

help wanted! (no, not the paying kind)

2007-04-23 Thread MaryChristine

as most of you know by this time, i am rather involved in rescue work. right
now, i need someone who is willing to post FeLV and FIV kitties to all the
various lists and websites available when the info is sent to me. i'm so
behind in things, and so much is going on right now with cats in crisis that
i can't always get to it right away, and we all know what that means for
their special-needs cats!

it means joining a batch of yahoo lists--some of you already belong to
some/all of them; and/or posting to a number of non-list sites. phaewyrn's
got the most updated list of places on her site, and i can walk anyone with
the time through the process at each site. it's not hard, just a bit
time-consuming. i know that others on the lists have done this as kitties
have wandered through their lists, but it would be really helpful if we had
a designated poster so that these kids would find homes

we have two FIVs in a gassing shelter in GA right now, and a purebred
ragdoll FeLV, um, someplace else undesirable

thanks!

kitty not eating

2007-04-23 Thread MarieG

  Hello everyone,

My cat recently was dx with feline leukemia. So far Chica tests negative. The
sick cat is three and Chica is two. Cakooie, the male will not eat at all. Any
advice about feeding? The vet says his white blood cell count is high and there
isn't much to do now but to make him feel comfortable. He does seem to be
drinking a bit and is walking around. Do vitamins help? What about high calorie
supplements?

Re: Survey on IFA's turning negative

2007-04-23 Thread janine paton
I was wondering this exact question tonight. Our
group has a pos kitten, about 6 mos, who IFA tested
pos 2 months ago. Any chance at all he will retest
IFA negative?

The poor kitten is in a kitty condo. It has a hammock
and he can look out a window but he so lonely, he
wimpers when he sees another cat. Not one of us has a
room without cats in it. And he's not tame enough yet
for most people. Beautiful, long haired kitten, too -
it's heartbreaking.
