Just wanted to thank you all for your thoughts and prayers...they help so much
and all the words of wisdom, too.
Thanks, too for remembering Bandy and Inky...Inky is just one tough kitty..We
celebrate his birthday the 9th of every month..so May 9, he was 20 and 9 months.
I received a card from Bandy's internal med vet the end of Feb. letting me
know that they had made a memorial contribution in his name to the Christian
Veterinary Mission..I couldn't believe it since he had been gone over 2 months
then and people were still thinking of him..It made me happy and sad, guess you
all know what I mean..
Our thoughts and prayers are always with you in your losses and for those
with sick ones..
If I can be of any help anytime, just let me know since I haven't been on

  My best to you all,

Hi,all
Patches, my one remaining positive, has been in the hospital for the last
3 days. I was scared (as was the local vet) that it was FIP or lymphoma. It
turns out it is severe pancreatitis and ketoacidotic diabetes. She has done
better than expected and, if she responds ok today to longer-acting
twice/day insulin (she has been on 4 x/day) she can come home tonight
(fingers crossed). FIP can sometimes cause pancreatitis, so it is not
definite she does not have it, but there are no present indications that she
does, knock on wood. The vets warn that it will not be easy to keep her
well or get her over the pancreatitis or the diabetes, but we are going to
try our best! She is eating a little diabetes prescription food on her own
without vomiting, which the vet says is good.

Would you please forward this to the FeLV list and ask people to send her
some healing energy and prayers?

Thanks and hope you are well,
Michelle

Re: Anyone know how much it is for anal sac removal?

2007-05-19 Thread Marylyn
Ask him about increasing roughage for her in an effort to get her to express
them herself. The glands are pretty easy to locate according to my
alternative vet. Betty has shown me how to do them and she does her own cat
in a cat sack. Both her cat and mine are fully clawed. Hers runs over 20
pounds so I think you can manage your little girl. Just remember to wear
old clothes in case you get some on you. YUCK!!!

Hey Marylyn,

I'm taking her in this afternoon to have them
expressed. I thought maybe I could do it after
watching the vet do it a couple of times; it didn't
look like rocket science. Yesterday, I got a cot for
my finger, some vaseline, and took her in the
bathroom. Put her in my arms like a baby, poked
around a little bit, but mechanically it just didn't
look like things would fit, so I opted not to try for
fear of hurting her. I am going to ask the vet if
he'll show me how to do it for future reference. He
doesn't do the surgery and didn't know anyone who does
around here, but I'm going to look into it further.

Little/Big Maxx

2007-05-19 Thread Kelly L
Well it looks like Maxx will not be going up to Seattle after all.
His original owner might be studying abroad and so Maxx is happy here.
He is very healthy. his labs were good. I have him on the alferon
protocol and am going to be adding the I. R on a monthly basis.
I do have a fear that with all my other cats he might end up catching
something down the road so as much as I really love this very sweet
mellow chubby guy I would love to see him go to a home with one other
positive cat, I am VERY protective over my kids so it would need to
be an exceptional care giver, One willing to continue using this
prophylactic protocol, i would supple the meds of course,
If anyone out there has a lonely FelV cat looking for a companion
please private email me and I can send some pictures,
he will ALWAYS have a home here so this isn't a plea for a home,,
Just looking for a safer one for him.

Thanks

Just be careful with that -- the anal glands are a bit fragile -- they can
rupture if you don't take extreme caution.

Re: Anyone know how much it is for anal sac removal?

2007-05-19 Thread Nina

Hey Wendy,
My dog has anal impaction problems. It can literally be a pain in the
a** for both of us. I can't imagine taking him into the vet everytime
they need to be expressed. I have found that if I do it before he
starts chewing at himself, things go easier for us. The anal glands can
become inflamed/infected and be very painful to deal with if you wait
too long. I do it regularly, (2x monthly). I think it's a very good
idea for you to have your vet watch and talk you through it the first
time at least. I looked into the surgery when I first found out Vladdy
had this trouble, and decided against it because my research showed that
it was a very delicate procedure and can leave them worse off than
before. I wouldn't be looking for a bargain when it comes to something
like this. If you decide to do the surgery look for someone that has a
lot of experience no matter what they charge. It could end up costing
you more in $ and misery if you don't.

Hey guys,

I think I might have to have my furbaby, Pepper's,
anal sacs removed. Hers are impacted again for

the

third time in a year and it's at least a hundred

bucks

everytime this happens. Does anyone know how much

it

might cost? I'm scared to find out!

Thanks,

RE: To Melissa: Re: Cassidy now at Best Friends

2007-05-19 Thread Melissa Lind
Thanks for the encouragement Wendy!

I really am doing much better now--the new job is taking all my time--(and
my kitties are very upset about it!) I haven't been able to read ANY
posts--I only scan for a response to mine. I think after a week, I'll switch
my email to my work mail and sneakily check it at work--it's just too much
to come home to 70 emails after working all day! After my training period is
over next week, I promise I'll read everyone's posts! There's so much I can
learn from all of you--but right now I'm swamped!

Plus I have two FeLV neg. kitties that I NEED to find homes for! The amount
of litter and food we are going through is phenomenal--but I'm sure you all
know what that is like.

Best to everyone, and I hope to receive pics of Cassidy at Best Friends very
soon!

Hey Melissa,

I am so sorry that I have not been able to reply to
this post until now. I saw it when I was out of town
last weekend, and have been so busy at work and home,
it's crazy. I am so happy to hear that Cassidy made
it to Best Friends! I hate that you miss him so, but
isn't it wonderful that he had someone so great that
loves him?! Some kitties never find that. It seems
so often here that someone finds something extra
special in the FeLV kitties. And like you said, you
can't put a name to it. I was surprised to hear you
call yourself selfish. I wouldn't call someone
selfish who would spend their own money and time to
fly a cat to another state and drive to yet another
state only to hand the kitty off to a place that would
take good care of him. No, selfish is not the word
for you. Caring, loving, sacrificial...those are more
appropriate characterizations. I hope you'll be able
to settle in soon without Cassidy and know that Joanie
and her crew are going to take good care of him. I
hope missing him isn't too hard on you.

Congratulations on your new job Melissa! You deserve
it! And who knows...maybe one day very soon, you'll
be going back to Best Friends and adopting Cassidy and
taking him back home to your new FeLV sanctuary in
Nebraska!

;)

Re: FIV Testing...

2007-05-19 Thread Gina WN
That's true MC. My Tigger and Taylor (10 day old kittens at the time) tested
positive for FIV and we assumed they were positive. This was back in 1992 when
there was less knowledge about FIV and maternal antibodies. Years later when I
had them retested because a vet was curious about their status, they were
negative and remain negative to this day.

There is no good reason to PTS a healthy FIV+ cat in my opinion, let alone a
kitten whose status might change. My Buddy lived to be 18 years old with FIV
and never passed it to my other cats. He lived a long relative healthy life
except for some dental issues around the FIV.

I hope this kitten gets a chance.

can someone please go read one of the articles at FELV+, FIV+, FIP and send the
appropriate one? i do not have the time to do so -- or do a web search for
"Maternal Antibodies in FIV". every vet should KNOW this.

A bit off topic but I know folks here know so much about FIV & FELV..
Someone sent me a post about a 7 week old F tortie mix sitting at a vet office
in Baton Rouge, LA who is supposed to be put down tonight or tomorrow because
she tests pos for FIV… Apparently the vet & the staff are clutching at doing
this---my question is
Should I ask what test was doneis it same setup as for FELV (Elissa
then confirming IFA)

Isn't it early to determine whether cat is really FIV pos?
I'm afraid I can't provide a home for this little one but maybe a little info
could prolong her life until someone is found…
