What in the world are they going to do for $250? That's an outrageous
price for a simple office visit.

Yeah i know the cat is overdue for a vet visit. But I am currently
unemployed at the moment, I am young so I still live with my mother. We are
keeping the cat because my friend does not have a place to live, no job, and
no money. I am feeding the cat innova food. The vet appointment will cost
about 250 bucks, and they dont do payments or help for the poor.
The cat is otherwise healthy. Any ideas on a good appetite stimulant and
where I can get one? I will try that drugstore link.

thanks

Re: Question about eye ulcers -Update

2007-09-10 Thread Susan Dubose
Yes, there are tumors that are non cancerous.

But it is my understanding, in people anyway, that any tumor in the brain is
automatically considered cancer for some reason.

I could be wrong on this.

I was told this from my friend who has a tumor on her pituitary gland, which
has since "sprung" a baby.

She has named them"pete"& "repeat".

Great gal.

Usedtowork w/her @ the AHS in the clinic, very dedicated to the animals.

Went towork for the HSUS on movie sets, now she regulates the animal usage in
films.

The stories she can tell :)

After Katrina she took sometime off tohelp in New Orleans, was trained to do
"water rescues".

I need to email her.

re: Update on Papillon

2007-09-10 Thread Susan Dubose
Well, I have to admit that Papillon LOVES to grab my hands, bite & bunny kick
when he gets a whim..

But they are ALL the best kitties in the world.

My friend Sheila had a polydactyl tuxie boy that was a real turd. A REAL
turd..

Oh, and he was felv+, of course, so no one wanted him.

His name was Blackjack because he had 21 toes.

He would be lying in her lab while she was on the computer, all sweet actin'.

All of a sudden he would go crazy and attack her face.

She LOVED that cat s much.

It was like an abusive relationship.

She even said that when she would dress or undress in her bedroom, BlackJack
would just lay on the bed and watch her, like he was @ the strip bar or
something.
 (Take it off, baby...!)

And he would grab @ her too... :)

She got sooo attached to him,she had to start putting some distance between
herself & him.

Which just meant he got to hang out in the indoor /outdoor felv+ area more,as
opposed to her bedroom.

He passed away from the neurological problems that Pappy is now experiencing.

"Ms. Dubose - thank you for your inquiry and thank you for your
confidence in our products. The L-Lysine monohydrochloride that you purchased
is a "pure" form of Lysine for feed use. It contains 98.5% L-Lysine
monohydrochloride and 1.5% moisture. It does not contain any propylene glycol.
Please feel free to contact me with any additional questions."

  Hey Susan,

No, I don't think it is common for the propylene glycol to be in Lysine, but
it has been made an issue, so it's caused problems somewhere down the line. It
should be listed in the ingredients. It's a preservative, so usually found in
products made for humans, but you can find pure lysine at a health food store.

Yesterday (?)someone posted something about valium & cats, what was the post?

Also, Lysine, how do you tell if it does have propylene glycol in it.

Would it for sure be on the label?

  Is it very common?

I am asking because I use the Equine concentrated Lysine.(hey, multi cat

It is PG is not listed, and I have emailedthe manufacturer, but I thought

Melissa,
That is a great idea! I always notice those spools
and try to think what they might be good for... Once
as a kid , okay, as a hippe, one of my first apts,
they worked for tables, but I'm more worldly now, or
at least I have a real table.
But , YES! A cat structure seems perfect. You could
do a lot with them and some carpet and imagination,
like little cat compartments for napping cats, using
the bigger spools. I will be thinking about this...
My son will probably have a fit. Mom is collecting
more junk... but oh well...(He attempts to keep me in
line...)
Thanks, Glenda

Re: Update on papillon

2007-09-10 Thread Susan Dubose
Hi Jane,

His treatment today was the shot.

It was composed of 2 types of cortesone & B12.

Once the disease takes the turn that Pappy's has, (neurological) there is
really no treatment.

With the exception of daily monitoring, lots of love & plenty of snuggle time,
supplements.

Dr. Smith said that the shot may or may not help him, however, he seems more
alert tonight and more social w/the other kitties.

I know this is all temporary, but a girl can dream :)

I'm so sorry that your Papillon has run into a rough patch. I hope
the treatment he got today (please give us some detail on his
treatment) will get him to a comfortable place where he can
be your 'best kitty in the whole world' for a long time to come.

This disease seems to inhabit the exceptional, sweetest, the
very best kitties in the world. They seem so open and grateful for
the love and care they get. They are a special breed and we
are so lucky to have the privilege of learning from them.

  Hugs to Papillon.

Papillon had his vet visit today.

He has been lethargic lately and yesterday he "stumbled" when he tried to
walk.

Dr. Smith found that his heart rate is up, he is having eye redness
w/discharge, his stomach is beginning to collect fluid and I believe his
temperature was up too.

Prognosis is that his felv is "on the rise", so to say.

He received a "cocktail" shot of Depo Medrol, Dexamethasone & B-12 & some
eye drops to be given TID.

And he told me that this was all we were going to do, and I am to call him
daily w/ reports.

Once they start having the neuro problems, it never "goes back" to normal.

I am going to accept this, my funds are always tight & Dr. Smith knows this.

He also knows that I am in the "felv+ kitty club" for good, and he knows
also how many more "special needs"cats I have.

And he has seen this condition so many times,so, he knows what he is
dealing with.

He stressed 2 things for Pappy, good nutrition w/ supplements & stress free
lifestyle as possible.

Those are the keys to the felv+ kingdom right now.

I also think what Tad posted a while back made alot of sense, that we take
them in, knowing they are going to die sooner rather than later, and it will
hurt us, but we go on.

We just do the best that we can do for these cats that not many people will
open their homes to.

And it is not their fault, continously dealing w/ the death of a beloved
pet is hard on our souls.

I understand why folks cannot do this on a regular basis.

We are blessed to have them, in so many ways, and it hurts when they pass,
but we just hold them in their final hours and tell them they are the best
little kitty in the whole wideworld.

But until then, everyday that we have them we greet them w/a smile and we
tell them how much we love them and how much they mean to us..

Subject: Question about eye ulcers -Update

Well, after spending over 2 hours at the vets this morning, it turns out that
Kaylee does not have conjunctivitis, herpes or a corneal ulcer. What she does
have is a tumor. She will be going into surgery on Tuesday to have the tumor
and, unfortunately, the eye removed. I am very worried about this since I have
heard so many horror stories about FeLV+ cats not making it through surgery.
Please say a prayer for a successful surgery, removal of the tumor and a good
recovery.

Thanks,
Chris

RE: My new "pimp daddy" cat trees

2007-09-10 Thread glenda Goodman
 Melissa,
That is a great idea!

2007-09-10 Thread Jane Lyons

Susan
I'm so sorry that your Papillon has run into a rough patch. I hope
the treatment he got today (please give us some detail on his
treatment) will get him to a comfortable place where he can
be your 'best kitty in the whole world' for a long time to come.

This disease seems to inhabit the exceptional, sweetest, the
very best kitties in the world. They seem so open and grateful for
the love and care they get. They are a special breed and we
are so lucky to have the privilege of learning from them.

Hugs to Papillon.

Jane

Prognosis is that his felv is "on the rise", so to say.

Once they start having the neuro problems, it never "goes back" to

I am going to accept this, my funds are always tight & Dr. Smith

He also knows that I am in the "felv+ kitty club" for good, and he

And he has seen this condition so many times,so, he knows what he

He stressed 2 things for Pappy, good nutrition w/ supplements &
stress free lifestyle as possible.

Those are the keys to the felv+ kingdom right now.

I also think what Tad posted a while back made alot of sense, that
we take them in, knowing they are going to die sooner rather than
later, and it will hurt us, but we go on.

We just do the best that we can do for these cats that not many

And it is not their fault, continously dealing w/ the death of a

I understand why folks cannot do this on a regular basis.

We are blessed to have them, in so many ways, and it hurts when
they pass, but we just hold them in their final hours and tell them
they are the best little kitty in the whole wideworld.

But until then, everyday that we have them we greet them w/a smile

Re: Update on papillon

2007-09-10 Thread glenda Goodman
Susan, I'm so sorry for your little Pappy and for you.
I know what you all mean by "the best little kitty
ever" I read Caroline's response to you...
I thought one day, a while back, it is almost like
THEY know they are a bit more trouble, so they make
sure they are extra charming, irresistable...Not every
single cat comes across that special.
For example, my cat Velcro, is a real pain...He is
grumpy, boring, lazy...never plays, not interested in
anything except food. growls at everyone, even me
sometimes...Except for being a fatty, is the picture
of health. I do try to restrict his food intake...He
can also be very needy, likes my lap a lot...If he is
comfortable and I need to get up, he will most often
bite and claw me , just to let me know he does not
like losing his lap...He is not what you could call
"the best kitty ever" . He is not FeLV+ kitty
either... My Gracie , however, is...and she is "the
best kitty ever"...
My heart breaks for everyone here with sick kitties
and those who have lost their kitty. It is just about
impossible not to cry every time one of us is going
through a crisis. There is just something universal
about how those kitties touch us, where we can all
understand just how sweet they all are and the pain
those of us who love them are feeling.
I do know one thing for sure:Our little FeLV+ Kitties
do bring out the best, in all of us. I know that.
Sending our love and support, Glenda and family

I'm sorry, Caroline, that I made you cry..

Funny how we do that, keep track of the days that we don't cry for them.

I still cry for Serenity, I was angry for so long after I lost her, it just was
not fair, to be cliche.

She was just coming out of her shell when I lost her.

I only had her for 5 months.

And I have only had Pappy since April or May..

I would give anything just to have him walk around and "sing" to me one more
time.

lalalalalalalala...!
Don't cry for me, my mommy!

It might be a prescription item, if so,hopefully your vet will be nice enough
to write a script.

If it's for a different cat, it could be a problem.

Normalprotacol wouldbe to see the cat.
Blood panel would be in order, especially for a geriatric.

medicine that helped her with digestion and vomitting. I used the last of it
on Tigger (the foster) and it worksgreat. But I need more and they dont have
it on petmeds website. The vet wont sell it to me without the cat going in
which will cost $250. I dont have the money for it and neither does the cats

Subject: Question about eye ulcers -Update

Well, after spending over 2 hours at the vets this morning, it turns out
that Kaylee does not have conjunctivitis, herpes or a corneal ulcer. What
she does have is a tumor. She will be going into surgery on Tuesday to have
the tumor and, unfortunately, the eye removed. I am very worried about this
since I have heard so many horror stories about FeLV+ cats not making it
through surgery. Please say a prayer for a successful surgery, removal of
the tumor and a good recovery.

Thanks,
Chris

RE: My new "pimp daddy" cat trees

2007-09-10 Thread Melissa Lind
Pet trees are so expensive-but yours sounds actually worth it. Some are so
overpriced for the crappy materials that are used. We've been meaning to
build a cat play house, but haven't yet.

One thing we do is to take old spools that electrical wire was on, or
welding wire (from local companies), and cover them in scrap carpet. Our
cats love it, and the spools aren't too big for our living room. They're
about chair-height, and the cats just love ripping into them. They can also
sit on top (carpet covers the hole), and play "king of the spool" while
swatting each other on and off! Such fun!

Last spring we had a table @ the Austin cat show as usual, and while there,
I purchased a new cat tree for a great price.

$225. sounds high, but this thing was hand made, very well hand made.

Very heavy base ( I could not even drag this thing) w/ 3 perches, 2 that
were semi circle & wrapped w/ a material that prevents kitty from falling
off while slumbering.

Like a "lip" kinda thing.

The 4 posts holding up the tree are all wrapped w/ sisal.

Anyway, I choose the black carpet w/ "faux" leopard carpet (had no idea THAT
idea could be found) that wrap the perches.

Kitties LOVE it.

They LOVE it s much, they found the man's business card in my wallet and
ordered 2 more.

Only he is out of black carpet so what does he use instead?

Purple

Royal purple w/ leopard fur trim..

Just like a cat to pick THAT combination...

I am going to have to watch their spending habits more closely

RE: Monkee's Funeral Service

2007-09-10 Thread Melissa Lind
Caroline,

I think that's wonderful what you are doing in Monkee's honor and for Rambo.
That's nice that your community has such programs. No such luck here in the
sticks. So, your Catholic church has a place for memorial services for
animals and such? I'm Catholic, and I can't imagine our church doing such a
thing, but we're a little far behind the times I think. The Pope said some
nice things about animals having souls or some such thing. I thought that
was rather progressive for a conservative pope. I'll have to look for that
quote somewhere. He also lamented the treatment of animals today for food
(factory farms, etc.).

As for the poetry, I know exactly what you mean! I'm an English major
(finishing up masters), but I'm not a creative writer by any means. I love
writing analytically. Essays get me very excited. I even applied to law
school but chickend out and didn't take the LSAT. I appreciate poetry, but
always thought that those who write it are totally different from me. It's
all too abstract for my liking. Well, when facing the loss of my second
pregnancy last year, I found myself in a really poetic state. Odd. I'd jot
down phrases and observations while driving. There must be something
therapeutic about it. I've never written a poem out of my ideas, but I've
hung onto them in case I decide to sometime. Creative writing hurts my
brain-the right side, since my days are spent in total left-brain-ness, but
I think that poetry can be very healing. You should share your poem if
you're comfortable with that.

I hope your service planning goes well. I completely understand about your
sister. My family is not very understanding about my animal passion. At
least your mom is helpful. Mine just bugs me to take her pets off her hands!
I finally got sick of it and told her that when she has 6 pets, then she can
ask me to take some, but until then, please don't bother me about it
anymore. Her pets have a fine home. They are in no need of rescue. If my mom
and sisters weren't so darn lazy and self-centered.

Enough ranting! I was trying to be supportive of you! Anyway, let us know
how it goes. I'm sure it will give you some peace to put Monkee to rest. It
will also allow you some time to grieve and get some sadness out.

Best,

Melissa

Melissa: In answer to your question, we haven't done Monkee's funeral
service yet. BUT WE ARE GOING TO DO IT. My mom and I spent a lot of time
debating where to do it and if we wanted a religious or lay person to do a
reading/say something. We found the location...a "barn" behind my the
church I grew up going to and where I went to school. The barn isn't really
a barn, it's a building that used to be a barn. And tho I went to a
Catholic church and school, my mom was surprised to discover that they now
use the barn and the outdoor area behind it for things just like this. I
kind of put it on my mom to help plan it and make phone calls/inquires and
she just lost track.

This Sunday, we are going to the Pet Memorial Ceremony sponsored by Chance's
Spot- an online community for those grieving the loss of a pet. It's at an
outdoor Amphitheater and there will be readings and music and everyone who
attends will get their pet's name read aloud. I planned to take both Monkee
and Rambo (the last of our geriatric cats- 19 yo- and my favorite of the
litter, whom we put to sleep last Oct). And by "take"- I mean their ashes.

We are still doing a separate, private ceremony for Monkee. I wanted to do
it prior to the group ceremony on Sunday, but we just ran out of time. I
wanted to do it tomorrow, but my Mom was dying to go to Morristown, TN to
visit her only granddaughter, Lily, and she does SO much for me, that I
can't begrudge her that.

I will definitely let you know what we decide to do. I am going to have
memorial prayer cards made for everyone who sent me a sympathy card (I got
tons). My sister thinks I am crazy for wanting to do that (she told my mom
that), but she can go to H-LL! There's a company that makes Pet Prayer
Cards online and I have picked out what I want and the pic of Monkee I want
on it. Still deciding about the text. I wrote a poem a week after Monkee
died. I am NOT a poem writer AT ALL tho. I am a writer, but not a poem
writer! But it just came out...I still don't know where it came from? I
thought about putting the poem I wrote on the prayer cards, especially if I
read it (or have it read- I don't know if I can get thru it) at Monkee's
ceremony. The only person I have shared it with is my mom, yet she still
hasn't read it yet because she says she can't (because she cries)- so I
don't know if it's any good or not!

But, I will keep you updated on what we decide. I'm pretty confident The
Monk will always be my mo
