Re: [Felvtalk] Questions about placing an FeLV cat

2011-01-17 Thread Kelley Saveika
Oh, also Crash's, where Sherry volunteers, seems great - run by a vet -
however I believe they only take cats from the state of Michigan - Sherry
correct me if I am wrong?

2011-01-17 Thread Kelley Saveika
We have had great good luck on this list adopting out FELV+ cats to
individual adopters. Emily adopted Tofu and she is immaculately cared for
and in the best situation of all, a real home and not a sanctuary.

BFAS, much as I hate them, has openings at times for FELV cats. They do
keep the cats in good condition but I disagree vehemently with their
practices and would not send my worst enemy there, let alone a cat!

happened to him but whatever it was he came through it with flying colors.
All credit goes to our fabulous vet!

If you can aford it, keep them. I would. I have 2 felv pos cats out of 7 and
they are actually the healthiest (?) of the bunch. Have had them in mixed
group for going on 4 years and my vet says that as long as the others are
vaccinated, everyone gets good food, shelter and love, there should be no
problem. And so far, he is right. Tell people not to be afraid of the word
positive, give the cats a chance and the love you get back is more than worth
it.

I don't know of anyone. The "sanctuaries" I used to know of have all been
closed after it was discovered they had "death camp" conditions. Basically
large-scale hoarding situations. People now seem to refer everyone they hear
about to me just because I have a few. Nothing I can do. I just try to convince
the people to keep them. The most recent lady who was refered to me has so
fallen in love with the cat she has found a sympathetic, who amazingly has told
her she can keep the cat with her other cat. I keep trying to tell people this
& it has finally worked!
Please be so very careful & check out thoroughly anyone who offers to take
them. I suggest you call the local Dept of AG & Animal Control & make sure
there are no complaints. Also check references of vets they use & maybe local
rescue groups.

I'm not sure who to ask about this, or if this message is able to be put in the
daily mailings, but:

Does anyone happen to know any responsible groups or people in the south
(preferably in Louisiana) that take in FeLV positive cats? I've been rescuing
cats and kittens at a house, and one of the kittens has turned up FeLV
positive. I have a feeling that the others will be too since they all share the
same water source and cuddle up together outside, so I'd like to find out where
I can try to place these guys after/if I am able to tame them.

The girl I have right now is spayed and is the sweetest little girl. She is
about 5-6 months old, incredibly playful and loves to curl up on me at night,
and give me kisses! I have 4 other cats that are negative right now, so I
cannot keep her- even if she were negative, I would not be able to keep her.
Can anyone please offer me any suggestions or group names to begin with? I'd be
more than happy to make a small donation to a responsible group/person who
would take her!
