Sherry My condolences on the loss of your Crockett. He sounds like a wonderful big boy. Kasie you might want to search the archives on mixing. I mix my positives and negatives - have for years - on the advice of my former vet - with no negatives turning positive. Others here do the same. Thank you so much for going through so much for this little angel! [Felvtalk] Discordant Results (ELISA+/IFA-)
Hello, We recently adopted a spayed female adult cat (2-3 years of age), Grace, that was tested for FeLV/FIP (neg. results) upon intake in Oct 2009 by the rescue. She was retested the morning we took her home by the rescue's local vet with a "low positive" ELISA for FeLV (FIV still neg.). The rescue allowed me to take her on a foster agreement because of my dedication and experience level, not with this disease in particular, but with caring for animals in general (former vet tech, former assistant to a veterinary homeopath, past pet sitter, herbalist for animals and founder of a large raw feeders co-op). We drove a long distance to meet her (from San Francisco to the Oregon border) - requiring a stay in a pet-friendly hotel. She seemed healthy when we met her (we spent a few hours at the rescue, then stayed overnight and picked her up the next morning) but she sneezed a few times and had a tiny bit of snot while we drove away from the rescue in her crate, and had a few fairly dramatic sneezing fits overnight in the hotel, but seemed otherwise healthy and has a wonderful, strong appetite and normal elimination. She developed a full blown URI in the days following and we had her retested by a local feline specialist. She had a positive FeLV ELISA and negative IFA. We have not brought her home yet as I have one very healthy 4 yr old male neutered cat at home that has never been exposed to any cat illnesses. I am keeping the new kitty, Grace, at my work office and warehouse (it's my own business and while not a home environment, I'm there twice daily and spend hours with her every day) and changing clothes/shoes, etc. and doing a lot of laundry to ensure I don't bring anything home to my cat. She's finally getting over her URI and will be retested for FeLV again on May 26th (30 days after the first time I tested her at the local feline specialist vet). I know the odds are not in our favor, but I am hoping she'll be part of that 30% that clear the disease from their systems and are no longer considered persistently infected. The reason why she's at my work is that was the only safe place to keep her in isolation because we live in the city, in a tiny studio, so we do not have a separate room to keep her in. We decided this while we drove home and I discussed the situation with my own vet (who is also a dear friend). We even considered renting an apartment for her and my partner to live in for the next 60 days while we test her every 30 days - that would be really expensive though and she's doing okay so far at my warehouse/office. I just wonder what other's experiences have been with discordant tests in adult cats (not kittens). IMO, it would not be ethical to expose my healthy cat to a positive FeLV cat. But we are totally in love with Grace -- we have been actively looking at cats to adopt since we lost our two Great Danes to senescence last year (in June and in Oct - both were aged 12). Since Nov, we've gone to so many shelters and rescues looking for just the right kitty, with the perfect temperament, to be a companion to our kitty that really misses his beloved elder dog pack. We knew Grace was "the one" the minute we met her. We adore her and hope to spend the next 20+ years with her as part of our family. We hope she will test double negative and can come home where we can then start a proper, slow introduction to our feisty resident kitty. Has anyone had this experience? If she tests positive for both or continues to remain discordant, we'll need to find her another home - breaking our hearts. She's getting a lot of special care, homeopathy and supplements in addition to her species appropriate diet, which we feel will support her towards the best possible outcome (the rescue feeds raw only to all her animals and I've fed raw exclusively since 1989). Thanks in advance! Kasie PS - I noticed today she has also cutaneous horn growth on her paw pads - one resembles a toenail, but the others are just short little tips/horns. I know this condition may be related to FeLV infection, but it may also be found in FeLV negative cats. I've never seen them before - sort of neat to see something so unusual/uncommon. ___ Felvtalk mailing list Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org http://felineleukemia.org/mailman/listinfo/felvtalk_felineleukemia.org

Sherry, I'm sorry to hear about the loss of Crockett, we've got a couple who love spankings too, it is so cute and endearing. Thanks for loving him! Crockett is a great name for a big, orange pile of love & stripes. I am always sticken by the unqiue and special names SIDS comes up with for each of these wonderful cats. And in the same fashion, you are always able to give us a glimpse into some of the things that made each kitty special, even in just a few sentences. It really captures the love they were surrounded by--something said so well in such few words, or a name that brings a face with it, come truly from the heart. Thank you so much for sharing with us so we can all remember them too. We are sad for their losses and their shortened lives but so glad for the love they had in your care. Keep up the amazing work. [Felvtalk] Navi's plea - urgent foster home or adoption needed, FeLV _
PHOTOS available - cannot send to this group (too large), but can do privately I am merely forwarding. For more info contact below directly - thanks! From: SI Feral Initiative Inc. Subject: Navi's plea Date: Tuesday, May 10, 2011, 6:54 PM Hello wonderful people - Meet Navi, a 2 yr old American Shorthair boy with a beautiful face and soulful golden-green eyes that we pulled in the nick of time from the high-kill city shelter last spring...we made the decision to pull him before we learned he was positive for FeLV, a retrovirus that depresses the immune system (at CACC, cats are ONLY tested once a Rescue has stepped up for them). Unfortunately, once it is discovered that a cat is FeLV+, the decision is often made at the shelter to euthanize them immediately. Navi is such a sweet boy, we couldn't abandon him to his fate at the shelter after making the promise to save his life. After some heroic scrambling we found a "short term" foster for him, to serve as safe haven as we searched for a permanent home. That was almost a year ago...and although Navi's angel of a foster momma loves him dearly and we had all hoped that it would somehow work out for him to remain where he is, her frequent traveling for work and imminent plans to move out of the country are now forcing us to find him alternative placement. We have about a month to find either another foster home or a forever home for this loverboy. All supplies and medical covered for foster homes. Navi is young and full of energy, a complete mush-ball, and asymptomatic at this time, which means he has a clean bill of health from his doc apart from his FeLV. He has the appetite of a horse, and lo-o-oves love! He is hands-down one of the most outgoing cats we've ever encountered. The very first time we met him he was immediately rubbing up against us, meowing to us for attention, and asking us to play with him. He adores catnip, loves his scratch lounge quite literally to shreds :), and goes into fits of ecstasy when petted. He has this truly adorable habit of bumping up against everything when he's happy - and yes! - Navi loves other kitties! He is, in a nutshell, a total sweetheart and so completely deserves what every pet should have - the chance at a loving home for the rest of his life. A note from Navi's foster mama: "Navi has been with me for almost a year, and I adore every little piece of him. Navi is so special that even people who don't really like cats have always commented on his beautiful energy and affectionate personality. He is very easy going but he loves attention and is not shy to express it - he definitely loves to give and receive lots and lots of love! When I'm sitting at my computer he pushes my arm with his head until at least I say hi to him, and of course I can never resist and I have to let him sit on my lap while I do my work. Lately he really enjoys sleeping on my pillow on top of my head, or all curled up behind my neck. Sometimes he also likes to wake me up in the morning by gently putting his paw on my face...and he leaves it there to be petted. His paws are s expressive like I've never seen before in any other cat. Navi is not the type of cat who wants to be ignored, although he does like to sleep and have his alone time, he is meant to be with people or someone who really enjoys his company and shows him that he matters. If my life was different Navi would have stayed with me for sure, but he would need a passport, visas and lots of unpredictable plane tickets :( The lucky person who will give him a home will be so fortunate to have him, I guarantee it!" ...and she couldn't be more right - you only have to meet him once to realize that he will return the favor a thousand fold. Knowing Navi means having constant reason to smile. Due to his FeLV status, we would like to seeNavi in a home in which he is either the only cat, or where he can be with other FeLV+ cats. For all the non-obsessed-Rescue people reading this letter, that's because while Navi is currently healthy, his FeLV status does mean he could become sick - so while he would be fine with several cat friendly dogs, pot-bellied pigs, or iguanas - he is both more vulnerable to the infections your average cat could fight off, and contagious to FeLV negative felines. Navi is neutered, FIV NEG, and will come to his new home thoroughly vetted, UTD on vaccinations, and micro-chipped. For more information, or to arrange a meet-n-greet with this darling gentleman, please contact us at sifi@gmail.com . You may also view Navi's listing on our adoption site at http://www.petfinder.com/pet-search?shelterid=NY881 . Application/Agreement required as always, and can be viewed on our site. We are unfortunately pressed for time, so if you could find it in your heart and schedule to cross-post this plea, we would deeply appreciate it. All our thanks, on behalf of Navi. ~ elena l. bass founder & TNR direc
