Re: Alternative treatments

2005-08-21 Thread MIRIAM BEBITCH

I have one FELV cat that I picked off the inner city streets when he was
probably almost a year old. That was about five years ago. I had another FELV
cat that came to my house as an adult and he only survived a year after that. I
think it depends a lot on the stress that the cat has been put through. My
Pepper lives in a very stress free environment. He has bouts of diahrrea and
vomiting and he eats special food. I find that Blue name brandChicken with
Rice has been the best so far. Keeping my fingers, toes, and eyes crossed, I am
hoping to have many more years with him.

My three remaining FeLV+ cats are 4, 5, and 6 years old. They have all
had the disease for at least three years. I lost 3 others. One was 5 and
had had the disease for at least 3 years; one was 3 and had had it for at
least 2, and one was 18 months old. It varies considerably. Vets
who are updated on their information do not ever say the one year thing. I
think some vets now estimate up to three years. But people on this list have
had cats live more than 5 years with it.

The people on this list will give you lots of ideas re: supplements.
Personally I give mine different combinations of Lysine, Immugen, Interferon
Alpha, CoQ10, and Feline Essentials. Except for the interferon, I mix the
supplements in chicken baby food and they lap it up every morning. There is
injectable interferon omega, which is supposed to be better, which has to be
imported with special permission of the FDA and is very expensive. I have
given that prior to stressors like teeth removal and moving.

Just remember that feline leukemia the virus (as opposed to leukemia the
cancer, which they can get but which is different) is just an immune
difficiency. It is like being HIV+. No one dies from HIV and no one dies
from FeLV. It just makes them more susceptible to things like colds,
infections, and, unfortunanately, things like lymphoma (cancer) and actual
leukemia. But if or when they will get and succumb to one of these is
completely unknowable. Your baby could be here 5 years from now, easily,
or she could not. The most important thing is to minimize stress for
her, give her good food and immune stimulant supplements, and GET ANOTHER VET
  (most of us had to).

thanks for letting me know. I was hesitant about giving my other cats the
shots. I have two cats with leukemia in my full basement downstairs and I
keep them away from my four others. I will ask my vet about the vaccine. If
he can get it I def. will have them vaccinated.

No it is new for Leukemia ,,, it does not cause lymphoma because it shoots
the
vax around instead of it staying in one area. I have the literature on
it,

just can't find where to buy it

Please try Tabby's Place located on Route 202 in Hunterdon Co. They take in
FIV positive cats, especially ones from shelters that are about to be put to
sleep. They might have a waiting list, but please try them. Also The Best Little
Cathouse in PA takes FIV positive cats also.

Please call them, you will get a better response.
Where in NJ are you? Maybe we can help. I can see if we can trade cats and
maybe give this cat a little longer time. I can talk to the shelter staff,
see what they say. You can also try The Best Little Cathouse in PA. They
take FIV cats also.

Re: I have 8 week old w/leukemia, now I found the litter it came from.

2005-08-02 Thread MIRIAM BEBITCH

Gina,
what do you mean you don't know where to take them? If you are going to keep
them, I would get them tested as well, although it may be a false positive
because they might have the mother's antibodies in their system. What kind
of test? Was it the snap test or the IFA test. The quick tests sometimes
come back false positive or negative depending on the age of the kitten and
last exposure. I would first get a definitive diagnosis with the kitten you
kept, then take it step by step with the others depending on the results of
the first. What do you mean they are getting a lot smaller in the heat?

Hi,
5 days ago I found a kitten, took it to the vet and had it tested and it's
positive w/leukemia and I'm starting treatment right away and am going to
keep it. Now I found the litter, two others, very friendly grey kittens and
I don't know what to do with them. Any advice as to what my next move is
with the other two? If I could keep them I would but I don't know where to
take them since they are getting a lot smaller in the heat. If anyone could
tell me where to take them in Las Vegas, Nevada. Much appreciated, Gina J

Re: OT - Sally in trouble with Panluek

2005-07-20 Thread MIRIAM BEBITCH
Sorry to hear about the kitties. I have had some kittens that died from it.
I have learned alot though. Kittens can overcome panleuk, but they have to
be kept very hydrated. I would get a bag of fluids and small needles from
the vet, and administer subcutaneously just between the shoulder blades.
Also, a great product to use for any dehydrated cats and kittens is
Pedialyte (unflavored, of course). Just syringe it orally as much as they
can tolerate and repeat, repeat, repeat. With panleuk, as well as intestinal
parasites, the kittens usually wind up dying from dehydration, not the
actual problem. Also, feed them cooked steamed rice with chicken or turkey
broth. Baby food is good too, but be careful not to buy baby food with onion
powder in it. Please tell her to get her other cats vaccinated. Good luck,
hope this helps.

Hello Everyone,

Poor Sally (from San Jose) is waging a terrible battle with Panleukopenia
kittens. The mother and four babies, (about 4 or 5 weeks old) were
rescued from a back yard situation. She has already lost two of the
kittens one of which was diagnosed by a vet with Panleukopenia. Her
computer is down and she is desperately seeking help with remedies for
vomiting, (the poor little guys can't keep the meds down). They don't
have diarrhea yet, (do have soft stool), they are starting to refuse food,
as
of this morning neither had a temp. So far they have been given 4 doses
of Arsenicum Album (6c once an hour), they are getting Transfer Factor
Stress formula and Amoxi, (prescribed by vet) and subq fluids. Not only
is she losing these sweet babies one at a time, but the rest of her cats,
(a whole houseful) are being put in danger. Anyone that thinks they could
help, please write me off-list and I'll send you her phone number, or
pass on the info.
Say a prayer for the babies, their Momma and the rest of Sally's cats,
(some of which have not been vaccinated!).

Thanks,
Nina
