Fu's severe constipation was:: canned pumpkin
How long should I wait for the canned pumpkin to take effect? I laced it with SEB. I'm thinking of taking him to the emergency vet - who I don't much trust. I've had bad luck there. The vet gave him a gentle enema yesterday because I was so concerned as Fu had nearly died after getting an enema three years ago. Fu is 19 and very frail with hyperthyroidism and his intestinal cancer is probably out of remission. I've also done fluids today; he had 100ml last night and vet said to give him 100 ml twice a day. I gave him 50 ml early this morning, thinking that it might be too soon to give more as the last dose was after midnight. I've also given him 3ml lactulose, and Laxaire. I fear I may have to go to the emergency vet. I think I'll give the second 50 ml of fluids soon. www.elephants.com - Original Message - From: Del Daniels [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Saturday, July 9, 2005 2:05 pm Subject: Re: canned pumpkin for constipation You do realize that a severely constipated cat can go into shock? My Tito was still going some and I didn't know he had a problem until he began trying unsuccessfully to poop ... fairly soon he began vomiting and trembling. He was in bad shape. Oh, Bonnie, it doesn't sound good for Fu, does it. When Effie's lymphoma went out of remission, she was frequently in the box trying to poop, nothing came out as she wasn't eating to produce any waste. Doc found more tumors against her spine and insides giving her the feeling of needing to poop. I do hope that is not the case with your kitty. Love and prayers to Fu. Re: Fu's severe constipation was:: canned pumpkin
If his lymphoma is out of remission, I would suggest talking to the vet about putting him on dexamethasone and depomedrol shots instead of prednisone pills. They are stronger and also reduce the need for pilling. They shrink lymphoma. I don't know if you were on the list and following when my Simon was sick. A month before he actually died from anemia, it seemed like he was dying from his lymphoma and the vet would not give him more chemo and sent him home to die, which we thought he would. We loaded him up on steroids (a depo and a dex shot one day, then dex for two more days) and he got better enough to get chemo and do well for another month. I would highly suggest keeping him on slippery elm. You can syringe it to him by mixing it with water, preferably hot water, until it is a goopy texture, cooling it, and syringing it a few times a day. It really does wonders with intestinal lymphoma. My Josephine had intestinal lymphoma, and the vets were amazed that she never had diarrhea or other bowel problems the whole time. I syringed her 3 cc's of slippery elm syrup (which I made by boiling the powder for a second or two with water, stirring and cooling) twice a day. Michelle

Thanks Del - the vet yesterday felt stool inside of him. He did a mild enema at my worried urging. But none of the other things I've tried have worked last night or today. I'm hoping something will so I won't have to go to the emergency room. Michelle, I do remember your Simon. Fu is on Leukeran and pred. I was letting him eat dry food this week which he likes because he has been losing weight. I guess that is what has caused the severe constipation. I'm worried that he may soon be too be too weak to try to pass the stool. Re: Fu's severe constipation was:: canned pumpkin
I understand. I agree that he may need another enema. But if he gets one and it works, I am saying that I think you should put him on Slippery Elm afterwards to prevent this happening again, or pumpkin. I have not tried Pumpkin for this, but hear it works well. I think the Slippery Elm is a miracle herb. It has nutrition value as well and helps the immune system. George Washington apparently fed his troops slippery elm gruel in the winter to try to prevent them from getting sick. When I mentioned the stronger steroids, it is in case the lymphoma is acting up and causing symptoms not controlled by what he is on, and/or if part of his problem with passing stool is from an intestinal tumor causing a blockage. Dexamethasone is amazing at quickly, though temporarily, shrinking lymphoma tumors. The effects can last a while. Re: Fu's severe constipation was:: canned pumpkin
Michelle, I will mention dexamethasone to the vet when we go on Monday. But Fu also takes methimazole for hyperthyroidism - would slippery elm's coating of the stomach impair absorption of his other meds? Re: Fu's severe constipation was:: canned pumpkin
I don't think so but I honestly am not sure. I have taken it with other meds and have given it to my cats with other meds and have never noticed a difference. I do not think it coats the stomach long-term, but gets mixed in with the food being digested and helps regularize its consistency. If you are worried, you could give it at different times than the meds. You can also look online for info on it or ask at any health food store. It is a very basic herbal medicine and people working at any health food store should know or know how to find out. The canned pumpkin worked on Amber within 3 hours, but she was not in the stage FU is in, I am not sure what to do.Regretfully I would take her to the vet, but maybe not let the vet do anything, maybe they can tell you what to do CherieBONNIE J KALMBACH [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: How long should I wait for the canned pumpkin to take effect?
