Sometimes, just being in the same room/area is helpful. I slept where Kitty could get easily and she would sleep close by. Not with, but close. Even when she left she was only a few feet away. Pam, I sure will be praying that this is just the result of all the handling and that she will overcome it.Pam Norman <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Yesterday was our vet appt in Madison. It seemed to go well. Bloodwork showed WBCs actually a bit high. HCT was 30. The vet palpated JuneAmy's abdomen & thought the mass there seemed to be smaller & based on that & my report that she had been eating a bit, went ahead with the Vincriistine. But last night I noticed that her breathing was changed. And this morning it was not open-mouthed but I"heavy". She was basically breathing with her whole body. So I took her in to my vet here before they were even open. He palpated her & right away found fluid in the abdomen. To be sure he put the ultrasound probe on her -- he's no expert but even I could see the black blobs on the screen that was fluid. So he did a needle aspirate & found blood. The tumor is bleeding into the abdomen. The cause is unknown. Could have been all the handling yesterday. Could be siimply that with such a fast growing tumor, as he says, the tumor basically outgrows itself & ruptures in places. HJe also checked her HCT & it was down to 26 from 30 yesterday. He said we had two choices, to let her go immediately or to wait & see if the bleeding resolved on its own. If it was due to all the handling yesterday with a tumor that was already in a taut condition, then this would be possible. He said that is what he would do. Since at the time, JuneAmy had wanted to be down on the floor & was walking around the room, he felt we needed to take a wait & see stance. See if it gets worse, if she gets noticeqbly weaker or if the abdomen gets bigger. He said he was pretty sure she was not in any pain, but that unresolved if the bleeding doesn't stop, she would just get weaker & weaker. I've had to be gone most of the day but when I got back, I found her basically the same as this morning. She has not eaten anything on her own & is still breathing heavily. But right now she just left the room & is out in the house, went out to the screened porch. So she is hanging in. I don't see any change from this morning. No better, but no worse. I just don't know what to expect now. If she is strong enough still to walk out to the screened porch, I can't think that her HCT has gone a whole lot lower. Her belly seems about the same. So I am just waiting to see which way things go. If she gets worse, I will let her go, be it later today or first thing tomrrow. Pray for her, please. She is a good girl. I'm sorry to hear about the turn for the worse Pam. I do think that her not getting weak and lethargic over the period of the day is a good sign, if she were losing very much blood, she would be too tired to be stalking around the house. Enjoy the time you have with herforget about "letting her go" that is a black cloud over you both. She will let you know if she needs help leaving this world. Kitty left on her own after two visits from her First woman and without having to travel and go to a vet. Enjoy your time with her and love her. That is all she asks and it is the very best you can give her. Honest. I know how hard it is. You can do this. Love her. None of us know our futures. Love her. Fw: [FIVCats2] JuneAmy day 7
- Original Message - From: Pam Norman To: fiv2 Sent: Tuesday, April 25, 2006 9:57 PM Subject: [FIVCats2] JuneAmy day 7 We are back from Madison She came throuigh well. I never did see the resident in charge (which I think is not nice) but the report she sent through is that she felt the abdominal mass is somewhat smaller & that JuneAmy seems to feel a bit better than last week. They did not do another ultrasound, which surprised me, as I would have been happy to pay for it & had indicated that I favored it, but her bloodwork was ok. Her HCT is at 30 which is actually a bit higher than last week. Her WBCs, contrary to going too low, are actually somewhat high! They are attributing that to stress possibly. But at least it wasn't low. Her liver values are still up considerably but they feel that is either due to the pred or the lymphoma. So they went ahead & gave her the Vincristine. We'll see how that goes. She's still on the pred, but 7.50 mg daily instead of 10. Yesterday she ate several times on her own & came out to the kitchen last night. The night before, during the night, she had also eaten on her own, all of the shredded chicken & Purina DM (high protein) that I had left for her. So I hope I'm doing the right thing. If she had not seemed a bit better, I would not have taken her in today but the fact that she did seemed to me to indicate that we should keep trying. It was very odd. While she was at the vet hospital & I was driving to Starbucks from MadCat, I was listening to Air America, as I always do when I am in Madison (where I can get it), & it was the woman named Stephanie. Can't remember her last name. Anyway her dog Chester had died suddenly on Friday & her other dog, Sally, has bone cancer. She had apparently been talking about this - Chester & Sally - on the air since then because many of the listeners who called in spoke about losing pets (interestingly mostly cats!) & how they felt about it, what they died from. I thought is was higly "conincidental" (?) that this should be on at this moment in JuneAmy"s & my short life so far together. I could not decide what message if any I should take from it though. Ini dogs it can literally go from nothing to a critical mass in days; in cats it can be only weeks. Which explains why no one at the clinic ever felt it. There is a huge mass in her abdomen, her liver is "inundated" with cancer (vet's words"), with multiple masses in spleen & lymph nodes. There is a suspicious spot on one of her lungs (they will analzye that further tomomrrow moning as the lung xrays were taken late), & there may be kidney involvement too. The prognosis is very poor. She said that if I had not brought her in, she would probably be gone in days. We discussed options & the complicating factors of the FIV. The vet noted that JuneAmy had clearly had a rough life & has aged physiologically far beyond her years. Despite the fact that many cats do respond well to chemo for lymphoma, with this particular kind the very best hope for prolonging life is a maximum of 6 months & that is generally when the cat is healthy to begin with. She felt that if we treat & JuneAmy responds to treatment, we might get a month or two. So more discussion. The Madison oncology protocol in well known in veterinary circles but my vet there felt that JuneAmy could not tolerate it, that it is too aggressive & might kill her, given her condition. So what we are doing is tentative. Today she had a subq injection of 2000 units of l'asparginase & she will have 10 mg of prednisone daily for 7 days at which time, if she is responding, they want to see her again & would begin some version of the full protocol. If she does NOT respond, then there is no hope whatsoever. And we will know about that in the next few days. If she does not respond, I will let her go. We don't think she is in any pain, but she is uncomfortable & depressed. I don't want to prolong that either. If she does respond & starts to eat & seems to feel better & can have that for a few months, then I want to give that to her. But if she does not, then I can't prolong things any further, for her sake. Meanwhile if she wants to eat, she can have anything she wants. I picked up some frozen fish filets in case she would like that. I will get some chicken livers tomorrow if I can, for sauteing. If she doesn't eat on her own, then I will spoonfeed her A/D. I know the cancer is "eating" a lot of what she takes in, but I still have to give her the full component of calories per day. I have some PolyMVA left over from Troika & since the expiration date is not until 2008, I will give her that too. This was not the way it was supposed to be. She was supposed to live happily ever after, or at least some years, until some FIV-related thing reared its head. She's been here only a bit over 2 months! I emailed Robert, the shelter owner in NYC where she was for so long, & I talked to him on the phone today after I heard the news from the vets. He is devastated. He loves her too. Re: JuneAmy, FIV+ please send positive vibes her way (or prayers, if so inclined)
Please pass this on to Pam: As I have mentioned I am having similar problems with Kitty, although she does seem to be hanging tough. Try Nutri-Cal (high calorie dietary supplement). It has the texture of cat lax and apparently cats love the taste. I have to put it on Kitty's nose so she tastes it then she eats a lot off my fingers or a spoon. Once she started eating this she (in a couple of days) started eating Fancy Feast foods that have a lot of gravy (easy in eating). Put JuneAmy's water and food dishes on something to raise them. This will make swallowing easier and take less energy. If you can get the cat to prop up on a towel or something so the front end is higher than the rear it also helps with breathing and swallowing (I know, it is a cat so good luck). Kitty's liver is pressing on her stomach which means acid comes up into her throat causing coughing and a sore throat, same as acid reflux for us. Pepsid works to relieve this. The proper dose per my vet is 1/2 regular tablet 2 times a day. However, I chose to give her a full tablet at times. I can not get her to take the pills the way she should and have chosen not to force them on her regularly. Discuss the pros and cons and right dose with your vet. I have made quality of life decisions that both Kitty and I can live with. Neither of us could live with chemo and some other alternatives. Kitty is in no pain but, at times is uncomfortable. Do not confuse the two. If you have serious doubts you may want to find an animal communicator if that is an area you are open to. FYI: Kitty started having problems in December 2004. On Feb 1, 2005 the specialists felt she would be around a very short time if not treated with chemo. She is still hanging in there and the quality of her life is good. Now, if I could just get her to eat better. This is all said to encourage Pam not to give up and to pass on some things I have learned. PS: A cool spot to lie is really helpful for Kitty. I suspect it settles her gut. There are alternative vets who may have some ideas too. All my prayers and hopes for her and JuneAmy. And JuneAmy sends all of her love and gratitude to Pam. If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow man.
