Blessedly, we have mostly shorthairs plus one fairly
fastidious longhair, so I haven't had to test this, but I would think something
like a light cooking oil would help -- it would probably soften up the clumpies,
not dry any tender body partout, and not be harmful (and marginally
helpful with hairballs) for the cat to clean off later.

Hi Diane,
Thank you for the suggestion, that's a good one.

To all of you who trim - you must be part magician, because as soon as I tried to focus on Bea's backside, she wanted to know what I was looking at and would turn around, as if to say, Silly human, my face end is on the other side! She was really very concerned with my sanity and as a result several snips of hair were taken nowhere near the target zone. We'll keep trying.

2006-11-09 Thread Leslie
Hi everyone,
My 6 month old kitten Beatrix is medium-haired. As with many teenagers, her standards of personal hygiene are noton par with the rest of us (being Satchmo and myself). She puts on the act of cleaning herself, but I think that she just copies the position that Satch gets in and has no idea what she's supposed to be doing down there. She doesn't have a problem with dingleberries (souvenirs of her trip to the litterbox: I went to the litterbox and all I got was this stupid dingleberry) to share with the rest of us, but as she likes to point her tail end toward my face end, I know that she needs some help with execution.

Every few days I'll just wet a paper towel and take a few wipes to help her out, but I'm wondering if any of the rest of you deal with this, if you think that as she matures and isn't so ADD about everything, she'll get better, or lastly, if there are any products (wipes)out there that might have some mild soap in them that would be safe to use on her. A wet paper towel will start to chafe, I'd think.

As thanks for your advice, and since I fell off the OT wagon, I may as well make a bender out of it, I thought that some of you might enjoy this:

I have two comments. First, on the issue of dirty bum, I have a large maine
coon cat with extremely long hair. I have to regularly trim is butt hair or
else it gets super dirty. Before I can start cutting, I give him catnip.
This distracts him so he won't bite me. He hates having his hair cut.

Second, about Winston, I have a cat who reacts the same way. Chelsea was
rescued when she was about 6 months old. We couldn't keep her so I found
her a home with a friend of mine. After a year, he gave her back becuase he
was moving. When she came back, she would ask to be petted then hiss and
bite. My husband and I have been very patient. When we pet her, we try to
stop before she hisses. After a year in our home, she is much better. She
loves attention, and rarely ever bites anymore. Our vet thought that she
might have been traumatized when she lived with my no-longer friend. I just
wanted to share this with you to let you know that there is a chance that
Winston will stop be aggressive too.

Thanks,

Thank you all for your baby wipe suggestions, I'll pick some of those up and give her a little trim. She's pretty squirmy, it normally takes two tries for one nail to be clipped, but we get there.

Her sister was a Manx and Beatrix also has the long back legs andthickleg hair that makes her look like she's wearing snowpants, which in turn makes me giggle every time that Iwatch her walk away, which gets her trotting back to see me, and then I can try to clip her nails again.

The ebb and flow of my house, it's high drama.

I used baby wipes (hypoallergenic and fragrance-free) on Bob my Manx when he was a kitten. As Manxes are prone to this problem, especially when they are young, baby wipes were the most hygenic and gentle way to go.

My Doobie can't reach to clean his butt.
It's always got poopie on it. If it gets bad, I use a wad of toilet paper and
pull the chunks off (to which he says "OUCH LADY!"). I've tried wipes and wet
washcloths, but he will NOT let me help him, he downright gets nasty about it.
So, I just try not to get my face too close, LOL! And, if it's bad, I grab and
run as fast as I can, before he bites me.
