rather because of diseases that take advantage of the cat's weakened
immune system...is Cloud anemic?

  Belinda,

Please add, my friend, Norrice's kitten Twiggy to the
 Candlelight
Service. She was about 9 months old, and probably died from FIP
  early Saturday
morning. She had started having seizures and was rushed to a 24
hours clinic. Norrice was told there was no hope for her
 recovery, so she
waseuthanized.. When she was rescued she was always thin and
  somewhat sickly,
she has good times but often had a fever which would come and
 go.
Norrice, had her to the vet, numerous times and previously they
  could not find
anything specifically wrong. This past week though, the blood
 work
showedthat Twiggy was slightly anemic, had a high white blood
  count, elevated
liver enzyme levels, and a high globulin count. She tested
 negative
  for both
feline leukemia and aids. She was always listless and since she
  never ate
much, or gained much weight, she was named Twiggy. Twiggy
 came
  from a
house with many unaltered animals (now they are all altered) and
  some kitten
deaths (probably also from FIP). Norrice, took Twiggy, to get
 her
  to a
better environment. Twiggy's life, though indeed short, was one
  filled with
  love and much caring..
  Thank you,

Is he getting supplemented with pet tinnic or has your vet suggested
a transfusion, the liver shake is also good for this. I hope to God
your vet did tests to see if the anemia is regenerative or
non-regenerative, if not get a new vet ASAP and have tests done for
hemobartenella, infact I would get Cloud on doxocylcline just to be safe
it won't hurt him and couls well save his life if it is hemo.

And most important if Cloud is not eating YOU MUST syringe feed, any
sick cat that doesn't get enough food will not have the strength to
fight off anything and WILL have firther complications from not getting
enough nutrition which will eventually kill it no matter how much
medication you are giving it. Nothing but food will cure Fatty Liver
Disease, something inappetent cats get all too frequently while the vets
hem and haw about other things going on and the owners have no idea how
dangerous not eating can be for cats!!

Liver shake is a recipe for food that will tempt many cats who will not otherwise eat. Here is the recipe:

1 cup raw liver
1 cup V-8, tomato juice, or fresh carrot juice
1/4 cup water
1 raw egg yoke
1 teaspoon kelp or spirulina

Blend in blender until liquid and frothy. Heat a little in a bowl until warm, and offer it to Cloud. If Cloud won't eat it, put a little on her mouth to lick off. This might get her going (it worked with Simon and he became a big fan of the shake). If she still won't eat it, syringe about 20 cc's of it into three times a day. It is complete nutrition. You can also get A/D, a prescription food that is palatable, high in calories, and easy to syringe feed, at the vet's.

Dox is different than amoxicylliin-- it is broader spectrum.

  Hi Lisa,
No Doxocycline is not the same as Amoxocylin, doxo is one of the
preferred antibiotics used where hemo is diagnosed. The liver shake is
a recipe which has liver as the main ingredient, I will find it and post
it to the list, coming right up. It is good for cats who are anemic,
but the best thing is to see an internal specialist as suggested and
find out why Cloud is anemic.

To give water to a cat, we usually give subutaneous fluids, which a vet needs to give you and show you how to give. The liver shake has a lot of liquid in it. If Cloud eat it or you syringe it, I would not worry about syringing water orally. When you next see a vet, though, you might want to ask about sub-q fluids. They are not hard to give. The thing with anemia is, though, that if you hydrate then too much they feel more anemic because it thins the blood. So right now I would focus on food and getting a real diagnosis and probably some steroids and antibiotics.

Kelp is a seaweed and spirulina is an algae. You can buy them both in powder or capsule (which can be opened) form at a health food store and at some supermarkets in the vitamin section. If you can't get these easily they are not essential to the recipe-- they provide extra vitamins and minerals, but right now the most important thing is to get food into him, any food you can.

Lisa, while you are at the store. Pick up some babyfood. Meat and
broth, no veggies, no garlic, no onion. Beechnut is better that
Gerbers, because Gerbers has corn starch. Sometimes heating it just a
bit brings out the aroma and gets kitties interested in eating.
Sometimes just a tiny bit on a flat dish, sometimes putting it in front
of their face again and again... You get the idea. Let us know how
you and Cloud are doing.
