Re: Itchmo Safety Alert: Melamine spiking widespread going on for years

i don't want to minimize this, of course, but my first thought when they
were blaming melamine was that if melamine was the problem, we'd probably
all be dead anyway

those of us from the 50s whose parents never fed us on anything BUT melamine
once it became popular. i see in my mind, all the scratches from the
steak knives. all the awful patterns worn off

and then, the microwave era.. if the scratches on the plates weren't
giving us our recommended daily requirement of melamine, once we started
fuming them and eating the melange of food and plastic, well...

in my not-even-remotely-humble-opinion, we've all been fooling ourselves for
years. some of us knowingly--realizing, to some level, how bad it was, and
just accepting there probably wasn't much we could do about it because we
were not in a position to be heard--most without any awareness. how many of
you remember when we first learned that there rodent feces are allowed in
our food, as long as it's in the proper percentage? same with insect
bodies this is NOT new. it's just taken a population that we seem to
care about more than we care about other people for us to stand up and say,
enough.

We will just let the story speak for itself. No more denials, no more
hemming and hawing by the FDA. Time to take massive cautionary action is
now. It's not just animal feed anymore. It's not just pet food. It's a
crisis. It's been going on for years.

Highlights below from the IHT article:

Here at the Shandong Mingshui Great Chemical Group factory, huge boiler
vats are turning coal into melamine, which is used to create plastics and
fertilizer.

But the leftover melamine scrap, small acorn-sized chunks of white
rock, is then being sold to local entrepreneurs, who say they secretly mix a
powdered form of the scrap into animal feed to artificially enhance the
protein level.

It just saves money, says a manager at an animal feed factory here.
Melamine scrap is added to animal feed to boost the protein level.

The practice is widespread in China. For years animal feed sellers have
been able to cheat buyers by blending the powder into feed with little
regulatory supervision, according to interviews with melamine scrap traders
and agricultural workers here.

Yeah, and you know, when I first saw melamine dishes again--after
years of not seeing the stuff anywhere, there it was in Crate
Barrel! Now on the back of anything it says, of COURSE, Made in
China and Not for microwave use or something along those lines.
Some of the shapes were really cute but I thought, How moronic! Why
buy anything you can't use in the microwave in this day and age?

And, by the way, I checked the ingredients in some Jewel Bakeshop
muffins and THEY have wheat gluten in them! I'm going to have to
start baking again! Everyone eats so much more processed food than
we used to.
