Other things being equal, are there any advantages
in output to scanning BW negs as Image in Vuescan to scanning them as B/W
Negative.

I'm curious to know if those who scan and print
35mm negs --using a 3600 dpi scanner and above --typically sharpen their
scanned images before printing. Also, do drum scans require less
sharpening?

I've had good results using Vuescan with my SS4000 with a minimum of
tweaking -- I usually use the default options. Sure, the help guide is a bit
opaque, but the software engine itself is high quality and worth the small
payment.

Any suggestions for removing water spots on

it helps a bit -- but if something more effective is available I'd like to hear
about it. How about Pec 12? I've also heard that rewashing film in developer can

When using Vuescan (with SS4000), I notice that I
do not get a crop file if I uncheck the raw compression box. Is this supposed to
happen and, if so, why?
Also, is it customary to work with the cropped
files rather than the raw files?

True, one would like to deal with a company that is solid financially. I

I'm waiting to see the price and response to the new Canon FS4000US, which
will be coming out sometime this month or early next month. The street price

knows, perhaps it will drive the price of other scanners down.

So I hear that ICE does not remove dust and scratches from

Ethol sells an anti-static film cleaner. I use it on my negatives and get
good results. I'm not sure how effective it would be with glass negatives,
but it is gentle and evaporates cleanly. For scratches or water residue
stains/deposits, I've found Edwal's No Scratch to be effective. It works
