About scanning and grain:
I used Kodak Recording Film for a long time. It was developed in FG
7, 1:3- very concentrated. I used an Exposure Index that varied from
EI 50 to 400. I loved the grain. I am now scanning those negatives
using a Nikon 8000 Coolscan and am very happy with the results. A

Hi Austin,
I don't know why I'm keeping this up.
I believe the types of files we are talking about
here are pixel based. If you use a hammer as a paperweight, is it
still a
hammer?
I just really think that in this whole discussion the pixels are the
paperweights.
You were insisting,
What on earth are you talking about? Where do you set the DPI of the
scan?
Scanners scan in SAMPLES PER INCH, and create files that are PIXELS PER
INCH. You are saving a file that is PIXELS ...
Please, Austin, not again...There was merit at least to the density

It would appear Miegapixels is mega not functioning. I'm getting no

Is this list an advertising forum for Megapixels? It is good that
contribution can be made regarding comparisons between the various scanners
available, but blatant advertising including pricing, in most cases not even
answering a question, is not what I thought this list was about.

Jeez, guys.
If you put half the effort into upgrading that you put into arguing
philosophical minutiae, all of your systems could be updated and put
through a rigorous crash testing program by now. :)
And when things drift off-topic, howz about remembering to change the

You might try doing a search at cnet.com for the best price. I'd heard on

mine I found that pagecomputer.com beat them by a few dollars. Also, ecost
claimed they gave free shipping, but if you read the fine print, they

Leo: Since you just received the scanned, I suggest you try to scan soome slides
with differing depths for the bow, from flat to really curved. If you scan them
and judge the sharpness of each, you may find that you will not need the glass

I've just signed up to this list. I'm looking for info on the new Kodak

Just one more thing, is it possible to search archives
Don't buy the Kodak RFS 3600, Tony. The April 2001 issue of Shutterbug

Hi!
I always use autoexposure on my Minolta Scanners. 16 bit linear mode has gamma
set to 1.0, which would be giving dark results. That can be fixed using
photoshop and setting gamma to 2.2 (or so).
Exposure can be controlled by levels dialog in the scanner software.
