Completely agree.
I remember having problems with AutoSave and backups way back in version 2,
when the system would lock up while it was saving, and I think we had
virtually this same discussion soon after I joined the list about 15 years
ago, probably regarding Fin3.7 or 2001, and that's why
That was a thought I had too - that the file might be directed to save
somewhere I had not intentionally directed it, but this is not the problem I am
having. I have checked it multiple times.
The strange thing is that I can get it to work by restarting the computer and
setting up AutoSave
Thank you all for the input. It has seemed to me that AutoSave works
differently in 2014 than it did before. When I've needed it the folder
is empty. I'm usually pretty good with save-as-you-go, but every once in
a while I space out, and that's when trouble seems to happen!

I suggest making sure the folder in Program Options is the one you think it
is, and that autosave is enabled. I remember having to fiddle with this in
Fin14.

I had started the thread on AutoSave and I just got a new one. The
message: The file could not be Autosaved. This file doesn't
exist. That's the file I am just working on, and had done a Save As to
this name.
I tracked this down to an illegal filename character (slash), from an

There is a program PDFtomusic Pro that I use. It only works on PDFs created
from inside a notation program, not on scans. If you privately email me the
file, I can export a MusicXML file and send it back to you. It is by no means
perfect, but it helps quite a bit.

Dear list,
I have a file (violin and harp) which had 13 pages. I've lost almost
everything. Finale said: unable to write *.bak file.
What has happened? I'm baffled.
Is there a way to convert a pdf back to notation? It is very complicated
music and I've had a lot of work. LOST!
Help?
Thanks!
The error you refer to is Finale unable to write a backup file, not your main
.mus file. Are your preferences pointing to a drive or folder that no longer
exists? Or it could be a preferences issue for that folder or disk, if you’re
on a Mac.

I know. Why does this error corrupt my *.mus file?
Are your preferences pointing to a drive or folder that no longer exists?
No. The folder exists.

I have not had that problem (MacFin14). I have the autosave interval at 10
mins and it frequently saves me. I do direct it to a different directory
than the default.

I've never had this kind of crash, but no matter. It could happen.

Can't say about autosave with the update (before yes) but FINMAC 2014d (is it?)
still displays aberrant behavior (including the occasional crash) with inertia
scrolling enabled. I slowed it down and no crash so far but that is not a
final assessment. GJB

I have never, ever invoked any kind of Auto-Save in any Mac application. Cmd-S
is so ingrained in my grey matter and workflow that anything automated just
gets in my way. Almost like those asinine thingies insurance companies want to
you plug into the ODB port on our cars. But I digress, big
Hi John,
I have not been able to get AutoSave to work correctly either. It doesn’t
cause crashes, but something in my system (I’m guessing either SmartScroll - an
app that allows incremental horizontal scrolling with arrow keys, or the
software for my Logitech mouse) i interfering with it. I
