several expressions (some, possibly all with enclosures) in a
document i am working on are now blank. the box is visible and the
handle is there, placed as i had placed it but the text is empty. i
correct a couple of the texts, they are fine. i opt-click to go
directly into the editing box

Are you missing the original expression font on your current system?
no, and there are MANY other expressions in the same font and i can
edit them without the problem arising.
I would assume you see a default placeholder font in the window.

category, also from another custom category instruments (for
percussion and object names).
