several expressions (some, possibly all with enclosures) in a
document i am working on are now blank. the box is visible and the
handle is there, placed as i had placed it but the text is empty. i
correct a couple of the texts, they are fine. i opt-click to go
directly into the editing box

Are you missing the original expression font on your current system?
no, and there are MANY other expressions in the same font and i can
edit them without the problem arising.
I would assume you see a default placeholder font in the window.

file in F2008, then would have migrated directly to 2010 and then

these are all individually placed expressions form the technique
category, also from another custom category instruments (for
percussion and object names).
there are no (never have been) parts defined, it is a trio (multiple
staves for each of the three players for sound objects and other
