In page view select Staff Tool, select the empty staff/staves within the
system/s you want to optimize (as it used to be called), under the menu 'Staff'
select 'Hyde Empty Staves'.

So I googled my problem and found about the loss of the suspect word
optimize and the new way of hiding staves. All OK.

There is a bug in Fin12 with respect (some) inserts. You are lucky that
Finale isn't crashing. I've seen this scenario crash Finale.

is there any way to have the staff groups that i have modified be
considered the default? when i reset the staff groups
(Utilities/Check Notation/Reset All Groups Brackets), everything
reverts to only the instruments defined by MM and all brackets i have
defined disappear.
this is silly.
i am working on a score where the piano is spread across 4 staves,
the idea being that no ledger lines are needed and the range and
register changes are immediately visible:
treble 15va
treble
bass
bass 15ma
BTW, this is a notation issue, i am not interested in arguing why one
should or
