I didn't notice any strange spacing in my tests where I hid noteheads by
replacing the heads with a blank character, but perhaps you have different
criteria than I do. I tried hiding the note head by manually changing it (using
the Special Tool), or with Utilities>Change>Noteheads, and by

I upgraded from 2009 several years ago when 2014 came out – I would
recommend it. The updates, including the instruments, and many new options
and possibilities make the workflow smoother and more efficient from 2009.
2014 definitely has some issues and some bugs, but it is certainly far

I'm still struggling on with regaining my Finale skills after the leap from
2000c. :(
Today I wanted to playback 8 of 9 staves for proof-listening. I consulted
the help which said I could select mute or solo in the Score Manager. But
where? Am I missing something obvious?

The score manager is activated with a command K for the mac and for each staff
line you are able to mute each one or solo each one separately. In Windows it
might be Cntrl K?
I still haven't figured how to mute or solo all of them at once. I think they
