Re: [Finale] Dorico test importing Finale XML

AFAIK, it's the REVERSE direction that's the problem for Dorico?

Once the data is in Dorico, you'll loose most of it trying to get it
elsewhere.

I emphasize I did ZERO EDITING.  All I did was:

1) Open Dorico
2) Import your XML file
3) Print score
4) Print parts

That all took about i minute.  I chose to use Dorico's internal PDF
creator which is really very nice and extremely fast.  But one
shortcoming is that it creates a separate PDF for each part, so I also did

5) Opened PdfSAM Visual to merge all the parts into one file.  That took
about 3 minutes -- longer than it took to create the parts in Dorico.

The layouts aren't perfect.  I'd certainly edit them a little.  But a
key point is that in almost every case, the parts are usable without any
editing if you are in a big rush to get something out for rehearsal.

The Unicode flag is probably what's causing it to fail on current Finale

[Finale] End of OSX pre-10.7 Finale plug-in development

2014-01-22 Thread Jari Williamsson
Hello!

From now on, the future Finale plug-in updates on the Mac side will
require OSX 10.7 or later. (Today's updates of JW Pattern and JW
Staff Polyphony were the last OSX 10.4 Carbon plug-ins I'll release.)

The future plug-in releases will be based my Cocoa UI framework instead,
which will provide much more current and powerful technology. The JW
Lua betas have been running running on that for all its releases.

Since the Carbon UI layer (which is a now-obsolete OSX user interface
technology) contained some serious limitations that were difficult to
work around, this will give me more opportunities to create plug-ins
that works the way I want them to work. For example, I can move ahead

However, when Finale goes 64 bit, TGTools will be completely dead. I

It's most probably the distance between systems and extra space for

the number of systems on each page you need. There are many other
approaches as well, but the page format is the most straight-forward.

However it messed up many measures so that it will take time to re-do the
 editing.

If you don't want to copy the measure layout, it's the score format you
should change (and not use the plug-in). You can redefine the part/score

 Could you explain the process?

During the projects I've done this year, I've used a system where I've
pasted code from my other my different plug-in sources into an automate
plug-in. That plug-in used a number of control files (in text format) to
set the distances in the cases where there needs to be a correction
compared to the default positioning (taking stem direction, other
artics, slur tips, ledger lines, etc into account). After all
positioning comes spacing (including changing certain types of measures
to specific widths), then alignment and then I make a approximate
calculation of the vertical span of a system, and respace.

The whole process goes outwards in the layout in one step (starting with
articulation placement, ending with system positioning placement).

Although the process is automatic, the thing that doesn't work good
enough yet is the pre- and post-spacing, and the system isn't that
flexible (I've more or less just added the editing cases I've needed).
I'm now moving towards a totally script-based solution instead, which is
almost a totally opposite approach, but it's also a much better way to
handle complex tasks such as spacing.

It's for Finale 2010 and above. This plug-in helps to find and correct
cautionary accidentals in the document. It works differently than other
cautionary accidentals solutions for music notation software, since it
first provides a list with suggested accidental changes. In the next
step, the user confirms which of the changes that should be made.

JW Accidentals contains numerous options to fine-tune the processing,
handled through Setting Profiles.

[Finale] New plug-in: JW Staff Polyphony

2013-02-18 Thread Jari Williamsson
Hello!

A new plug-in called JW Staff Polyphony is now available for download
from the tips site.
www.finaletips.nu

It's for Finale 2010 and later versions and it's a multi-purpose plug-in
for tasks that are related to layers, chord lines and other kinds of
music lines that appear throughout the score.

(This plug-in replaces the old plug-ins JW Merge Layers, JW Explode
Layers, JW Quick Explode and JW Chord Manager. These plug-ins are
now marked obsolete.)

Version 1.00 contains the following tasks:

LAYERS
Copy - Copies the contents from one source layer to another destination
layer.
Move - Moves the contents from one source layer to another destination
layer. Layer-assigned expression are moved to the destination layer.
Swap - Swaps the contents between two layers. Hidden layers can't be
swapped. Layer-assigned expressions are also swapped.
Remove - Deletes the contents for the selected layers. Hidden layers are
never removed. Layer-assigned expressions are also removed.
Merge - Merges note layers with identical durations.
Split - Splits notes in Layer 1 to multiple layers.
Expression Merge - Transforms identical layer-assigned expressions (if
found for all used layers) into one expression for all layers.

STAVES
Merge - Merges contents from multiple staves to one staff (according to
a couple of different notation styles).
Split - Distributes notes from chords on one staff to multiple staves.
From Layers - Distributes layers to individual one-layered staves.
To Layers - Merges one-layer staves into one staff with multiple layers.

CHORD LINES
Add - Adds lines of notes to chords or to single notes.
Delete - Deletes a note line from chords. At least 2 notes must be
available prior to removal.
Drop - Drops a specific line one octave down.
Keep - Keeps a specific note line while removing the other chord notes.
Rotate - Rotates the chord by moving the top/bottom note an octave. A
minimum of 2 notes is required for the chord to be rotated.
Transpose - Transposes a specific note line or the full chord.
Split Unisons - Splits unison intervals into octaves.

[Finale] New plug-in: JW Staff Set Panel

2013-01-02 Thread Jari Williamsson
Hello!

A new plug-in is now available on the Finale Productivity Tips site,
called JW Staff Set Panel. It's the first plug-in I've created that
contains plug-in data stored in the document (credits to Robert
Patterson for the implementation idea).

It's for Finale 2010 or later. This plug-in can create and display staff
sets in a list and navigate between the staff sets. Navigation to a
staff set can be made in Page View as well. Furthermore, each staff can
be named and the staff set names are saved with the document (a category
named JW Plug-in Data must exist in the document for this purpose).

When a staff set is created, it inherits the relative vertical staff
positions from the selection.

This plug-in supports windowshade, a feature which can be turned on by
using the JW Plug-in Tool plug-in.

It would be great if there were a mass-mover/edit command that could do

If you have a recent version of Finale, you can kind of do this manually

With Kitchen Department you can get the note names mapped to both the

[Finale] New Plug-in: JW Grace Note Slash

2012-10-05 Thread Jari Williamsson
Hello!

A new plug-in, called JW Grace Note Slash is now available for download
from the tips site:
www.finaletips.nu

It's a plug-in for Finale 2010 or later. This plug-in adds or updates
grace note slashes on beamed groups, taking the angle of the beam into
account. It follow the same rules for adding slashes as flagged grace
notes do. If you change grace note document options or the appearance of
a beamed grace note group, please run the plug-in again to update the
slashes.

If no slash appears, make sure that either the first entry in a beamed
grace note pattern is set to use a slashed grace note, or use the
Always slash flagged grace notes Document Option.

The slashes are added to the document as shape articulations. The shape
articulation definitions are reused if possible.

Re: [Finale] chord chart slash spacing

Is there any specific reason why you don't include chords in the music
spacing options?

I think your solution of putting rests for spacing purposes is an
excellent solution. That gives you the ability to control the width and
chord placement quite well. If you need more space in some part of the
measure, insert rests at half the duration and put twice as many rest
for that part of the measure.

with several changes can still a problem since I usually have chords
unchecked in the music spacing prefs.

I usually wind up doing what I had to do before chords could be attached
independently and put rests in each measure to provide basic, consistent
spacing (i.e., 4 quarter rests in each measure in 4/4). I copy this
throughout while setting up and change as needed while scoring. Overall,
pretty painless, but I was curious if someone knew a better way to handle
this, like maybe a different minimum measure width or something else.

[Finale] New plug-in: JW Live Sync

Hello!

A new plug-in is now available for download from the tips site, called
JW Live Sync:
www.finaletips.nu
(click on Downloads to the left and use the Plug-ins subsection)

It's for Finale 2010 and later. This plug-in is for documents that use
live performance data (instead of Human Playback). It syncs the live
performance data between staves in the document, to produce the same
playback groove in all the staves.

Mark the target region where you want to sync the live performance data.
Mark the so
urce staff for the groove (to sync to) in the plug-in window. The source
staff can be a part of the destination region.

Start time and velocity will be adjusted if source and target notes
start at the same position in the notated music. End time will be
adjusted if the source and target notes start at the same position, and
have the same duration in the notated music.
