Re: [Finale] Unusual Tuplet

Use the actual correct rhythm with ties. No need for a tuplet.
Half tied to eighth note. Eighth note tied to half.

Re: [Finale] DC al Fine behavior

2019-03-02 Thread Ryan Beard
Is “include in measure numbering” checked or unchecked for the pick up measure
in the Measure Attributes? If it’s unchecked, that’s probably causing the
problem. I always include all measures in numbering, but I create different
measure number regions so that the displayed numbers are correct.

Select the period character. Change its font to the music font.

I personally like to use text periods rather than music symbol, because the dot

Transposed.

But I know a few band composers who provide C scores, so it’s not unheard of.
But, as long as it’s indicated on the first page of the score, you’re good.

Full Transposed Score

Full Concert Pitch Score

Re: [Finale] Band/wind ensemble questions

2018-08-06 Thread Ryan Beard
1) It’s pretty much evenly split. I prefer Bassoons below clarinets, but others
prefer them below oboes. If your bassoons only play with the oboes creating a
double reed mini ensemble, then you might want bassoons below. If you bassoon
parts are pretty independent from oboes, but mostly double the bass clarinet
and bari sax, then you might want to put them below clarinets and above saxes.

2) Trumpets above horns in band scores. (Though there certainly are exceptions
in the standard literature). And cornets above trumpets (though again, there
are exceptions).

3) Yes, Double Bass below Tuba and above Timp/Percussion.

You didn’t ask, but some people are sticklers to putting mallet percussion at
the very bottom, below the drums and other non-pitched percussion. But, if
you’re composing for a specific amount of players at their own “station”, then
mallets can go with whichever part it’s assigned to.

Wind Ensemble vs Band shouldn’t have much effect on the score order. If you’re
writing one to a part, like an orchestra wind section, then you might want to
stick with orchestra order, particularly if you think that orchestras would be
interested in performing this more than a band.

I like doubled parts, especially in the clarinets and trumpets. The clarinet
section can take on the role of the string section (particularly with your
cadre of low clarinets available—but I would advise to cue any alto clarinet
solos in another instrument as a back up, since most bands seem not to use that
instrument). Having those parts doubled gives some extra meat to the sound. The
doubled cornet parts areahold over from the early days of transcribing
orchestra rep for winds. The cornets would play the violin melodies while the
trumpets would just play the original orchestral trumpet part. Having the full
section of clarinets and cornets can allow for divisi opportunities, which
could come in handy.

Yes, it’s true that the majority of band scores don’t remove empty staves. It’s
very much quicker to prepare a score without staves being removed.

I just did a piece with that. I used the frames of a measure attached text box.
Doubt it will work for the linked parts, but I just needed to do the score.
It would be nice if there were rectangle smart shapes possible that attach to

[Finale] Slightly OT: "to go on" endings

2015-09-22 Thread Ryan Beard
I'm arranging a tune that will have several stopping points. It's ceremonial
music that can be used as underscoring for processions, etc.

I think the best way to indicate this in the music is to relabel 1st and 2nd

Are there any suggestions on a different approach?

Re: [Finale] 12x18 booklet printing workflow

2015-08-26 Thread Ryan Beard
Depending on the size of the project, I might print to a booklet directly from
Finale. (A 4 or 8 pager...)
Otherwise I print to PDF, then use PDFClerkPro to do the impositions. You might
check to see if Preview can do impositions. It's received a few updates in the
last couple OSes, IIRC.

My HP Laserjet 5200dtn is still going strong after ten years. Good to know that
the Ricoh is available in case I need it. It's rare that the duplexer unit will
handle a large size like 12x18.

The Hi-Hat Foot volume doesn't match the Kick Drum volume. Likewise for the

I'm not using Human Playback initiated from the Playback Controls in this

I've gone into the Mixer and raised the volume slider all the way up in the

to no avail. The percussion instruments are hard to hear even when the

Is this a Garritan issue? SoftSynth doesn't seem to have this problem, but
I don't like [some] of the sounds as much.

The expression has a playback definition of Swing value 100.
I've added a hidden expression to take care of the tempo change in the same

I've tried changing the instruments on the other staves in the Score

switched to General MIDI instead of Garritan Instruments.

On the staves that do swing, a change of instrument still swings.

How do I get all staves to swing?

On the staves which don't swing, have you any other expressions which
you might have made as copies/edits to existing expressions?

I ask because over the years of using Finale I've found that a lot of
playback problems in my scores have resulted from my doing such things
-- it's often easier to make a copy of a current expression and then
simply edit the text and forget to check whether the original had any
 playback definition.

Drag the .mus files you want to create PDFs into the queue window.

Make sure extend secondary beams over rests is selected in Doc OptionsBeams.
Use special tools to hide the last note and its stem. The beams may break, but
you should be able to use the be extension tool to get the style you're after.

[Finale] Need to show resting section staff in solo passage?

2014-08-13 Thread Ryan Beard
In a work for string orchestra, I have a passage with 4 solo first violins, and
the rest of the section in resting.

I have included 4 staves in the score for the first violins and will hide the
empty staves when I lay out the rest of the score. These four staves will be
included in the Violin I part.

Do I need to have a fifth staff with rests to show that the rest of the section
is not playing this passage? Or are the current four sufficient with the staves
labelled as solo for this passage?

Anyone care to discuss playback with respect to breath marks? I'm not sure
what to expect here - shortening the length of the note (which is what
appears to be the default HP) doesn't really seem to jibe with reality -
what music really sounds like when performed - nor definition. Maybe I've
misunderstood what the term means, but I've typically considered a breath
mark to indicate the place to breathe (in vocal or instrumental) resulting
in something of a short break - not quite a caesura, but *something*.

This doesn't have to do with my own music - it's for a client who wants to
hear that brief pause without shortening the full value of the note to
which the breath mark is attached. FYI thoughts I had or read about: could
put in a hidden rest, but that changes the time-sig - or a zero-width
 measure...or?

 Thoughts? Many thanks!

Re: [Finale] Percussion playback

2014-05-31 Thread Ryan Beard
Ah, you're not defining which notes you play to get the sound you want, you're
defining where the snare drum note heads appears on the staff. To enter a snare
drum note in speedy entry, you'll always use midi note 38. Finale will place it
on the staff wherever you define in the percussion map designer.
This distinction confused me for some time as well.

How do you enter notes and rests? Do you use simple entry? I'm not well versed
in that, so I'm not much help. But in speedy, you can position the cursor using
the up and down arrows. In the top left of the speedy frame it'll cycle through
all the percussion instrument sounds assigned to that staff position. Once it
says Snare Drum, you should be good.

Still might be cheaper in the long run to just bite the bullet and print to

Look at the cursor before you enter text before or after an insert. If it's a

I wouldn't go that far. A courtesy accidental is very helpful on those

If you will permit a somewhat differing opinion, I think there are places
where cautionaries are necessary, even when there isn't a key change, and I
have figured out after many years that NON-parenthesised ones actually are
 easier to read.

I know that parentheses make logical sense, that a parenthesised accidental
is kind of like saying, I KNOW you know this, but here's a reminder to
differentiate it from one that is absolutely necessary. But from a distance,
parentheses around an accidental makes all three (sharp, flat, and natural)
into the same outline, so you have to read more closely to see which
accidental it actually is. Already, sharps and naturals are easy to confuse
with each other; the parentheses make it worse. I keep getting caught by
these on the gigs I do where the Finale user is less than professional. And
Sibelius seems to have this redundant accidental default that puts in
accidentals on the SECOND of two tied notes!

accidental markings without parenthesizing them should be shot, IMHO.
And people who pencil in unnecessary accidentals BESIDE notes in the
music should also be shot. If one needs a reminder about a note, write
the accidental ABOVE the note, with a parenthesis and there will never
be any confusion. IMHO, the only time an accidental should be penciled

Is there a way to individually adjust the stem/note head connection? Not
looking for the Stem Settings in the staff attributes as those affect all

The grace note triangle note head is placed slightly higher on the staff
than the full size note, and the stem continues past the note head.
A staff style applied just to those notes won't work since the grace note

Not talking sounding, talking written (not score-at-concert pitch). The
lowest note the samples play is an octave above the actual lowest note of the
 instrument.

For horn it's more complicated. The F horn's
high C (F5) is a practical limit, but certainly
not a theoretical limit since that depends
entirely on the player for ANY brass instrument.
I agree that it's an artificial limit. (How low
 do the horn samples go?)
If you define (reasonably) high C as the practical limit, the samples end a
 5th below that.

But it does seem strange to NOT extend the sample
ranges, since it should be so easy to do so even
if the instruments themselves can't be counted on
 to produce the notes.

I am sure Carl can speak for himself, but my recollection was that it was

 is available.

The transposition problem is that Fin2012 forces you to change instruments
just to change transposition. While this may make sense for saxophones or
oboe/e.h., it makes absolutely no sense for trumpets, french horns, or
wagner tubas in a 19th century setting.

 Robert,

It's not really that big a kludge. Here is the procedure from MakeMusic, to
change the transposition but keep the same playback.

To change the transposition of a staff you will need to change the
instrument, then adjust the playback sounds and transposition. To do so:

 1. Use the Selection Tool
 2. Highlight the measure you would like the transposition to occur in
 3. Go to Utilities Change Instrument and select a different instrument
(each new transposition on the same line will need a different instrument
selected. Any single line instrument will work because we will change the
 playback sound)
 4. Go to Window ScoreManager and click on the Instrument List tab
 5. Just to the left of the instrument name you will see an arrow pointing at
the name. Click on that arrow to expand that instrument information. Select
the instrument that you changed the line to at the bottom of the expanded
 section
 6. With this instrumented selected, you can change the transposition with the
pull-down menu at the bottom right of the ScoreManager. If it is not one of
the common transpositions in the menu, you can select Other and create your
 own.
 7. Still in the ScoreManager, change the playback sound of the new instrument
by clicking on the assigned sound and selecting Horn in F from the pull-down
 menu.

Yes, but it gets complicated when you have a piece with horn in D and horn in E
and horn in F, and their bass clef counterparts, like so many 19th century
pieces.
If MakeMusic can preload the Vuvuzela in the instrument list, they should
certainly include standard horn and trumpet transpositions.

I am sure Carl can speak for himself, but my recollection was that it was
the transposition problem. If you are entering big 19th scores in Finale,

 is available.

 5. Just to the left of the instrument name you will see an arrow pointing
at the name. Click on that arrow to expand that instrument information.
Select the instrument that you changed the line to at the bottom of the
 expanded section
 6. With this instrumented selected, you can change the transposition with
the pull-down menu at the bottom right of the ScoreManager. If it is not
one of the common transpositions in the menu, you can select Other and
 create your own.
 7. Still in the ScoreManager, change the playback sound of the new
instrument by clicking on the assigned sound and selecting Horn in F from
 the pull-down menu.

 properly based on 10 x 13 as well...I don't understand this but it doesn't
seem that page format is the problem - but I may be wrong.)

I printed the part on my printer and, despite not being a large format
printer, what I got was letter size and correct. There doesn't seem to be
anything in the original notation that needs to be corrected, but somewhere
in the formatting(??). I have uploaded both the scanned image of the
problematic copy and a pdf of the original finale file. I am not sure where
the problem is but I venture to guess that until I push the right button, the
printout from Kinkos won't change. Anyone have a suggestion? Here is a link
 to the two files:

The one marked marimba scanned is the problematic image from kinkos and the
one marked pdf is from the original finale file.
