The list's web page at Sam Houston State Univ says it includes 389
Non-digested Members of Finale and 401 Digested Members of Finale. I
lurk mostly since I am still using Finale 2007 and waiting for the perfect
upgrade, but I find the list valuable and interesting.

Dear Listers,

I use Finale and this List on a regular basis. I have always
appreciated the friendly advice that my colleagues on this List give
so generously.

I have been an end user of Finale since it became native for PowerPC
and have never been let down by the program. My work is primarily
with brass quintet and woodwind quintet. At this point, I have no
complaints with Finale that I can't live with.

IMHO: Finale is worth continuing.

Hi all,

I've been MIA because my server rejected list mail so often that I got
unsubscribed, and it took me a while to get around to re-subscribing. I am
simply adding my voice to the general point of view that being present here is
worthwhile. Finale problems get discussed, advice (excellent advice) is freely
given, and musical subjects of general interest come up and provoke thoughtful
contributions. I am proud to be a part of this and sorry to have been missing
for a while.

About the value of Finale - I find it hard to imagine how I'd manage without
it. My working habits have become intertwined with how it works (that is not
all positive, although mostly so, it's just the way it is). Of course, I could
revert to pre Finale ways, but I have learned to enjoy its advantages and to
work around its limitations. And I'd hate to have to learn a new program (even
if Sibelius handles lyrics better).

This is the only one I know.

I was on a list discussing an unrelated subject and it was decided to move

feel motivated to go to the website and so have lost the stimulation and

I'm not ready to give up on this list yet.

Nor I. I've gone to the Finale forum twice, ever. I loathe forums. Slow,
unwieldy, and I have to go to them. The only time I use other forums is to
solve a specific problem with a specific piece of software, usually once, and
that's usually register, post, wait, hope someone knows something, give up. I
know with this list I'll get professional responses from knowledgeable people.

Does Finale have a Facebook page for discussion? I use groups there, and being
combined in one communications platform, it's fairly easy. If this is a hint
that the list is going, I'd prefer to move there. That's what I did when I
closed our Vermont Composers mailing list.

As for Finale itself dying, I don't know and hope not. Nothing good enough has
come along to replace it for my work. Sibelius is even more traditional than
Finale is trying to be, and that's the wrong direction for me for both of
them. (I have Sibelius but only use it to open student work. I've never
actually done anything with it.)

Dennis, I would suggest you get involved in the MuseScore project. It is
nowhere close to being able to replace Finale or Sibelius yet, but
precisely because it isn't you might find that it could be molded in a
direction you would like.

Development is extremely active. Anyone who hasn't looked at it in the last
year has no idea how much more it can do now. I continue to be intrigued by
it because of its being open source, and more important, having an open
data format.

Development has been slow but steady -- I had my students in a middle
school music theory class download and use it three years ago and it was
perfectly adequate for the projects they were working on then and it's
only gotten better in the intervening years.

Amazing quality, especially for the price.

But, as Robert said, not a total replacement for Finale or Sibelius yet,
although a number of people who would have been potential customers for
Finale's PrintMusic over the past few years are finding it great for
doing what they want to do.

[Finale] Is FINALE worth continuing?

2012-04-15 Thread Howey, Henry
I started this list a long time ago.

After dealing with MAC and PC 2012 I now wonder if FINALE is ready to be
ditched.

1. The MAC interface sucks. The PC is better. Why has it not been updated for
15+ years?

2. SIBELIUS now has 64-bit access. FINALE gave us score mismanagement.

3. FINALE bought GARRITAN and MusicXML. Now support for either of these SUCKS!

4. When they were in an acquisitive mood, why not TGTOOLS?

5. SIBELIUS knows it's on the same computer as before when I update hardware.
Why doesn't FINALE?

6. We are being used as beta testers without benefits. Pay up, MM!
