When you say modern scores are you really asking about cutaway scores?
They're possible in Finale without messing with opaque boxes -- look
in the on-line documentation.

[Finale] blank boxes

2011-01-09 Thread Steve Parker
In my previous notation program I used a lot of empty text boxes to
stop things from appearing in print.
I had the option of moving the graphics layer of any element
(including these white boxes) up or down.

Is there any equivalent in Finale?

Thanks!

Yes, you can position opaque boxes over things, but no, there is no way
to control the order in which Finale draws things. Your method will work
if the thing you're trying to hide happens to be in a lower drawing
layer. I think others may have more specific information about the order
Finale uses.

On the other hand, one of the available text styles (in expressions and
text boxes) is Hidden. So if you have a reminder note or something
that you want on screen but not printed, you can set the text to Hidden.
It will display lightly on screen but will not print.

What items are you trying to hide? There may be other Finale-ish ways of
doing it.

Now I understand why all the questions. Coming from another notation program
can be a bear -- as can going to another one (I've failed at Sibelius, and
never was comfortable with Graphire).

So yes. You can create opaque boxes in Finale but they don't cover everything.
There's some internal layering going on in the program that I don't follow,
but things like staves and notes can't be covered up.

However, you may not need boxes anymore There are two more recent developments
that probably give you what you need:

1. The show checkbox (in the context menu for most items) is really useful
for having things visible on the music but won't print.
2. Partial measure selection means staff styles can hide most anything else of
your choice.

I've used Finale now for a couple of years. The trouble is that I'm
working in it daily with deadlines and no time to sort out the stupid

In terms of workflow, Igor and Finale are about as opposite as possible!
In the past couple of days I've probably upped my chops 1000%!

Thanks from everyone for all the help!

Hi Steve. Welcome to Finale. Any chance that you have a secret Noteheads
code or address that can persuade them to stop sending me monthly emails? I
sometimes imagine a time thousands of years from now when civilization and
technology have crumbled except for this one email server faithfully sending
out its monthly notices. Kind if like Wall-E, but not as cute.

Have discovered the delights of the shape designer.
I quite like it - it's not full of stuff I don't understand!

I can't find how to have an opaque box.
Is it possible?

What you won't understand is why it never reacts the way you think it should
once you get it into the score. I can't even get a shape expression to appear
in the same place twice when I look at it. I can't stand the damned thing, and
never use it as a result.

Yes.. I'd just about got there..
Turning off 'allow horizontal stretching' helps.
It would be good to attach it to the page rather than to a measure.
Actually that would be good for all expressions too.

For me I think it is workable as the very last step before publishing.

Don't forget to assign your blank box expression to a metatool.
Otherwise, if you enter it 'manually' into the score a number of times
from the same shape (Expression), and change one of them, it will change
all of them. The same if you copy one from one system to the other.

Also write to Makemusic and request that they introduce boxes and
circles, with fills, as (custom) smart-shapes - this would make life so
much easier!
