A very unsatisfactory solution is to put arco and pizz(a). in different
layers with different midi channels hence different dyn

Thank you David and Raymond;
Now I know the (ugly) truth! For a half-decent playback I just may have to copy
onto additional staves the arco material that needs to be heard through the
pizz. fireworks :-(

David is correct — the problem is that the Garritan sounds were never actually
meant to be used in a notation program. They were meant to be used in a Digital
Audio Workstation environment, where one would have much more control and
automation over levels.

I believe the problem lies in the fact that the two different sample
sets were not recorded at the same volume level. Apparently the
pizzicatos were recorded much louder than the arcos, so at the same
indicated dynamic level in your score they won't sound at the same volume.

In the Finale (2012c PC) playback of my new string quartet I am getting
exploding pizzicatos and barely audible arcos.
Is there a way to globally adjust the volumes of these independently, to get an
acceptable balance?
TIA for your help.
