On the Mac side we have a Safe Mode, which follows a Safe Boot, meaning the status of the computer's OS for that particular boot, one that is basically system only. This would identify if the problem might be a third-party add-on. Tracking that down might be annoying but beats a re-install.

backups so you don't have to build these from scratch: prefs component files: ??? ensembles.txt and pagesizes.txt (if you have changed them) FANs (if you have changed them) your default file(s) document style files templates 3rd-party plugins etc.
