Hi Jef,
Actually, it helped a LOT, and (knock on wood) kernel_task is behaving today. I
am going with the built-in monitor only, for now.
I believe there is still something a bit wonky about how Finale 2012b handles
files with 30+ staves, but at least now the problem isn't being compounded by

i am on 82 individual instruments and the work was getting really
unbearable, waiting up to 30-40 sec for a simple copy from one
instrument to the next below it. it is fine now.
don't know if this is related, but are you using staff styles?
I believe there is still something a bit wonky
Hi Jef,
Yes, moderate to heavy use of staff styles.

Hi Jef,
Tried that. Unfortunately, it makes no difference in my case -- and I also
thought the mdimporter crashes were supposed to be fixed in Fin2012b anyway?

Hi Ryan,
I use linked parts but that's non-negotiable. This Mac should have no trouble
handling that, though. There is definitely something else going on, something
Finale is doing that's causing the kernel_task process to spin out of control,
which drags down everything with it.

yeah well, i thought linked parts would get fixed in 2008... 2009,
2010, 2011, 2012... and 2012b.
sorry i don't have any other ideas, that and quiting linotype worked
for me. you aren't using any font management software, are you?

I had the exactly same thing in Lion and Spotlight indexing fix (removing the
file) fixed it for me Jeff suggested it earlier...

Hi Jef,
I'm afraid I'm not using font management software. Going nuts here trying to
figure this out!

Actually -- this sounds weird but I'm beginning to suspect it's not actually
Finale-related. It may be a coincidence that the kernel_task spike tends to
coincide with my launching Finale. Instead, it seems like it might have
something to do with my external monitor? That seems weirdly
wow, no idea, never had anything like that happen here. but when i'm
at home i work on the external and use the laptop to dock things, so
external is almost always on when laptop is.
Instead, it seems like it might have something to do with my
external monitor? That seems weirdly improbable,
Well, it seems like kernel_task activity is often heat-related, and plugging in
the external monitor does force the MacBook Pro to use the discreet
(non-integrated) graphics card, which runs a lot hotter than the integrated
card that would be in use with the external screen disconnected.
That
Darcy,
I don't know if this is relative or not because I am not good at computer
programming, etc.
I'm wondering if DiskWarrior is supposed to help with slow downs and so forth?
I have tried it on general principles once in a while and it seems to help
sometimes.
I also use David Pogues
Hi Michael,
Thanks but is is definitely a Finale problem, not a Mac OS X problem or a
computer problem. Everything else runs fine and I keep the machine and OS

Darcy, do you have linked parts in this document? I find that those are a
major culprit of slow behavior, especially in large documents.
Also (while in the Page Layout tool), look at the Edit Page Margins and
Edit System Margins window. Click the Apply to Parts/Score... button.
