I think you should *not* try to play around with your shell startup
Well, system-xfree86 is now a virtual package, so it can't be removed, so that's no surprise.
As for the failed to exec dpkg-split errors, make sure your PATH has both /sw/bin and /sw/sbin in it (i.e. with printenv PATH), and check that /sw/bin/init.sh (or init.csh, depending on what shell you are
Do you have source /sw/bin/init.sh in your .xinitrc?

Since you didn't say, I'll assume you're on 10.3. In that case you need to install the gcc2.95 package from the XCode CD. gcc2 is a virtual package that shows up when you have gcc2.95 available.

As an additional note--Fink has a virtual package called x11 which
shows up when you have XFree86 or Apple's X11 installed correctly.
Since it's a virtual package, it has no version history, so that's what
you're seeing.

Once again, stuck on something that's probably quite simple.
When I tried running apt-get the first time, I got the following error
message:
Can't exec /usr/bin/nm: No such file or directory at
/sw/lib/perl5/Fink/VirtPackage.pm line 234.
it then claimed it couldn't find the package. I now
Btw another fix for this, if you aren't running X all the time and
don't feel like playing w/ the DISPLAY variable is to alias xterm to run
the login shell always i.e.
alias xterm='xterm -e bash -l'
On Tue, 16 Dec 2003, Steffen Lund Hokland wrote:
Dear all,
Thanks Eric,
Or if you don't want to alias it, you can change the Terminal item in the
X11 Applications menu to run xterm -e bash -l instead of just xterm.

That is indeed the issue: /usr/bin/nm is installed by the Developer Tools.
My understanding is that this error is harmless.
