In an attempt (unsuccessful) to avoid installing the
Apple Developers Tools, I installed Fink (complicated
story, so I'll just leave it at that). Now I find that
Fink is preventing my use of a program. I followed
instructions for updating it, which seemed successful,
but the program still fails.

i installed fink, got xfree86 and bundle-kde, followed
the instructions, created the .xinitrc file et al...
when i click on the x-icon, x starts, but it runs the
default window manager; when i type 'startkde' in a
terminal window there, it starts kde, but kde runs
'inside' the default

If you're speacking about Apple's terminal, yes I tried running it
here. It works for gftp (because it doesn't necessarily require X); for
dia it just says No diplay found which is perfectly normal.
