Bill, I started a build of the gcc4 package last night on a G4 which I had clean installed fink 0.8.1 and set it to the unstable branches. The build isn't finished yet but it did get pass the compilation of libgfortran.dylib so far without a hitch. I assume that both of your G4's may have fink
