The appended changes to the gdl.info updates the package to the

Thanks for the update. Would you like to over maintainership of this package ?

[Fink-devel] Webpage languages

2014-01-24 Thread Sébastien Maret
Hi all,

The translated versions of the Fink webpage are outdated. For example, the last
news on the French version:

http://www.finkproject.org/index.php?phpLang=fr

is more than three years old 2012-04-09. In addition, the « Status » sections
does not mention 10.8, nor 10.9. Both the news and the status section are in
english anyway.

Users who have set their system in French land automatically on the French
version of the page. From what they see on the webpage they may think that the
project is dead.

Since nobody seems to translate the pages anymore, I wonder if we should
continue having versions in languages other than english.

Cheers,
Sébastien

[Fink-devel] Download statistics on a package

2013-02-19 Thread Sébastien Maret
Dear all,

The upstream developers of one my package would like to have some statistics on
their users (number, country, etc...). They have a tracker on their download
site so they can in principle know how many Fink user are using it (providing
that Fink declares itself as a download agent when downloading the source,
which I think it does).

However, since the source is copied to our mirrors and since Fink uses this
mirror by default, this only gives a lower limit on the number of users. Is
there another way to get some statistics on a package usage?

Cheers,
Sébastien

 1) We don't control Apple's servers.

 2) I haven't seen this one, but then I'm still using Xcode 3.2.6 on 10.6.

 3) We don't control what ports people's network admins leave open.

Of course. My point is that if we had pre-compiled binaries, users would not
need to install Xcode. Also they would need to worry wether rsync and/or cvs
goes through their firewall since apt-get uses http.

 4) We _could_ have fink complain instantly if /usr/local (maybe even
/opt/local) is detected and refuse to build until that (those) are moved
out of the way rather than getting down to the end and saying oops,
you've got stuff we don't like. I'd be in favor of that--it wouldn't
 be too tricky to implement.

That would be great. We could even have Fink move /usr/local before compling
stuff, and putting it back in place when done. Or perhaps it is too intrusive?

 5) Yup.

As for the binary distribution, there are several issues to address:

I believe that signing packages might require a newer dpkg/apt. I've
been testing updates, but (A) they still need some fixes to be fully
functional, (B) the person who had been working on them (Sjors) isn't
able to devote large chunks of time, and (C) I seem to be the _only_ one
 testing them and providing feedback.

Additionally, we'd need a framework of some sort (like Debian's web of
trust) to register all of the signatures for package contributors.

It's very rare that a maintainer controls _all_ of the packages upon
which their package depends, so we'd also need to have a policy about
dependencies: e.g. if I update a package in the source distribution
that has a versioned dependency on something you just updated there, and
you go on holiday, then what do I need to do to be able to update _my_
package in the binary distribution? Do I sign for _your_ package and
upload it? Do I have to wait for you to return?

We could have the same policy than for .info files. If the maintainer is
contacted and does not reply within xxx days, then other package maintainers
(and/or fink-core) are allowed to upload .deb on the server.

And there's the issue of the somewhere. In principle we could
continue to use Sourceforge. Based on my experience with doing fink
releases lately the file release system is actually reasonably fast
currently--at least for files the size of the fink source tarball.

How big is the full distribution in binary form ?

[Fink-devel] Status on Fink webpage

2011-11-25 Thread Sébastien Maret
Dear all,

I found the Status section on the Fink webpage a bit confusing. It says that
Fink 0.9.0 was released on 25 June 2008, and that this version is intended for
10.5 users. New users don't know that Fink 0.9.0 is a binary release, and that
there are much more recent source releases. At a first sight, they may think
that Fink development has ceased, which of course is not the case.

I would suggest to mention the source release before the binary release in this
section. In fact, since we hadn't had any binary release in more than three
years and that the binary version works on 10.5 only (which makes the source
install the de-facto standard method for fink installation), I wonder if we
should mention the binary release in this section at all.

Best,
Sébastien

###

The error occurs in the post installation script at the following line:

Replacing this line by:

  PATH=%p/bin:${PATH} texconfig-sys init || true

solved the problem for me. I don't know if the files that failed to build are
critical or not. texlive seems functional thought.

[Fink-devel] Fink's package database is confused by 10.4-EOL

2011-09-16 Thread Sébastien Maret
Hello,

The package database seems to be confused by the 10.4-EOL branch. See:
http://pdb.finkproject.org/pdb/package.php/gildas

It says that the version in 10.6 and 10.5 unstable branches is 201104f-2,
although the actual version in these branches is 201104h-1 :
http://fink.cvs.sourceforge.net/fink/dists/10.4/unstable/main/finkinfo/sci/gildas.info

Indeed the databases uses the info file from 10.4-EOL, which version is
201104f-2.

Cheers,
Sébastien

[Fink-devel] Move gcc46 to 10.5/stable branches ?

2011-09-15 Thread Sébastien Maret
Hello,

Could gcc46 be moved to 10.5/stable and 10.6/stable ? One of my package depends
on that version of the compiler, so I can't move it to stable.

A more general question: now that we've only have a stable branch in 10.7,
wouldn't it make sense to drop the unstable branches in 10.5 and 10.6 (or
rather rename the unstable branches to stable) ? Maintaining stable and
unstable versions on 5 different OS/arch (10.7/x86_64, 10.6/x86_64, 10.5/i386
and 10.5/powerpc) is too much work for developers IMHO.

Cheers,

[Fink-devel] scipy-core-py name change

2009-09-27 Thread Sébastien Maret
Hello,

For about 6 months at the end of 2005, the numpy package was called
scipy core. That's the name we picked up for the fink package when
numpy/scipy-core was first packaged. In order to avoid confusing users
any longer, I'd like to rename the scipy-core-py package to numpy-py.
For this I propose the following path:

1 - Revise scipy-core-py (1.3.0-4) so that its depends on fink-
obsolete-packages and that it conflicts/replaces numpy-py (= 1.3.0-4)

2 - Create a numpy-py package (1.3.0-4) based on scipy-core-py and
that conflicts/replaces scipy-core-py

3 - Modify all packages that depends on scipy-core-py that they depend
on numpy-py (= 1.3.0-4) and bump all revision numbers. All the
packages will need to be modified at the same time to avoid breakages.
Here is the list of packages that depends on scipy-core-py:

pygtk2-gtk-py
pygtksourceview2-py.info
biopython-py.info
mlpy-py.info
traits-py.info
ccpnmr-py
h5py-py
libsvm2numpy-py
matplotlib-py
mayavi2-py
pytables-py
pywavelets-py
relax-py
rpy-py
rpy2-py
scientificpython-py
scipy-py
pygsl-py
pyfits-py

Does it sounds like a plan?

Best,
Sébastien

[Fink-devel] plotutils-2.4.1-1009 linking problem

2009-09-23 Thread Sébastien Maret
Hi,

On 10.6.1 x86_64, libplot.dylib (which is part of
plotutils-2.4.1-1009) does not seems to be linked correctly. When I
compile it on that system, I get the following warning:

*** Warning: This library needs some functionality provided by -lpng.
*** I have the capability to make that library automatically link in
when
*** you link to this library. But I can only do this if you have a
*** shared version of the library, which you do not appear to have.
*** The inter-library dependencies that have been dropped here will be
*** automatically added whenever a program is linked with this library
*** or is declared to -dlopen it.

and the library isn't linked to the libpng.

% otool -L libplot.dylib
libplot.dylib:
/sw/lib/libplot.2.dylib (compatibility version 5.0.0, current version
5.1.0)
/usr/lib/libz.1.dylib (compatibility version 1.0.0, current version
1.2.3)
/usr/lib/libmx.A.dylib (compatibility version 1.0.0, current version
315.0.0)
/usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib (compatibility version 1.0.0, current
version 124.1.1)

On the other hand, when compiling in 32 bits, I don't get the warning
message and the library is correctly linked:

% otool -L libplot.dylib
/sw/lib/libplot.dylib:
/sw/lib/libplot.2.dylib (compatibility version 5.0.0, current version
5.1.0)
/sw/lib/libpng12.0.dylib (compatibility version 36.0.0, current
version 36.0.0)
/usr/lib/libz.1.dylib (compatibility version 1.0.0, current version
1.2.3)
/usr/lib/libmx.A.dylib (compatibility version 1.0.0, current version
315.0.0)
/usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib (compatibility version 1.0.0, current
version 124.1.1)

Any idea on how to solve this?

Salut, Sébastien. The ltconfig script in plotutils isn't able to
parse the output of the file command for x86_64 libraries. I've
fixed that and a new revision is now available on CVS:
 http://article.gmane.org/gmane.os.apple.fink.cvs/85900

Thanks for fixing this so quickly. I think you also need to add the --
x-includes=/usr/X11/include and --x-libs=/usr/X11/lib to the configure
parameters, since the configure does not seem to find the X11 libs on
SL.

[Fink-devel] Atlas bug on 10.4/PPC ?

2009-03-29 Thread Sébastien Maret
The programs bellow fails to link against lapack library from the atlas
package:

% gfortran -L/sw/lib -llapack -lcblas -lf77blas -latlas test_dgesv.f
/usr/bin/ld: Undefined symbols:
___powisf2 referenced from liblapack expected to be defined in libgcc
___powidf2 referenced from liblapack expected to be defined in libgcc
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

This is with gcc43 4.3.3-1000 and atlas 3.8.2-2 on MacOS 10.4.11 PPC.
The powisf2 and powidf2 symbol are defined in
/sw/lib/gcc4.3/lib/libgcc_s.1.dylib. Indeed the program links fine if
one add -lgcc_s.1 to the link command:

% gfortran -L/sw/lib -llapack -lcblas -lf77blas -latlas -lgcc_s.1 test_dgesv.f

Why does this library need to be added by hand? Is it a bug in atlas on
10.4/PPC? The same program compiles well on 10.5 without -lgcc_s.1.

What does your config.log file say about this? Mine (on a successful
 build of lblgtk2) says here:

 configure:4317: checking for GNOMECANVAS
 configure:4325: $PKG_CONFIG --exists --print-errors

Here what I get:

configure:4317: checking for GNOMECANVAS
configure:4325: $PKG_CONFIG --exists --print-errors libgnomecanvas-2.0

Installing gail18-dev fixes the problem. Corey, would you mind adding
it as a builddepend?

Thanks,

No, I don't.
Looking into the compilation log more carefully, I found:

Indeed, installing doxygen fixes the compilation problem.

[Fink-devel] Fwd: Patch for the Fink Numarray package

Subject: Patch for the Fink Numarray package

 Hi

Using the Python Numarray package I came across a bug which
apparently is fixed in CVS (see below conversation with the
developers). I created a patchfile for the numarray-py package and
adjusted the info file accordingly. You might want to adjust the
revision number, I just set it to 1.patched and not 2 in order to
 get your update.

 Regards

 Michael

Another alternative is to use the unofficial numarray-1.5.3 tarball

lightly tested with Python-2.5.2 but there are known self-test

  Hi
I know that Numarray is being phased out and one should
switch over toNumpy, but I encountered a problem with a
rather large code (cantera)which makes use of Numarray, so
I still direct this question to you.
The cantera code I use had the strange behavior of
crashing pythonwith an error message stating trying to
deallocate None. I trackedit down to PyArray_FromDims
being called very often, and found thatafter each call the
reference count of the Py_None object is decreasedby 1.
This means, that after ~1500 calls to PyArray_FromDims,
pythontries to deallocate Py_None, resulting in the crash.
First I thought it might be cantera misusing Numarray.
But then Imodified the dimsdata example provided with
Numarray to usePyArray_FromDims, and the same behavior
 shows. Strange enough,PyArray_FromDimsAndData works just
 fine.
Is this a known issue? Is there a patch fixing this? I
hacked a quicksolution by calling Py_INCREF(Py_None) after
each call toPyArray_FromDims in cantera. This fixed the
immediate symptoms, butI'm quite sure that this might make
things even worse (and am wellaware that this doesn't fix
the actual cause of the problem).
I attached the modified dimsdata example with a python
driver scriptso you can try to reproduce the problem. To
do so, save the attachedfiles and in a shell execute:
  python setup.py build
ln -s path/to/dimsdata.so .
python test.py
You should see that the reported reference count
decreases by 1 aftereach call to PyArray_FromDims, but is
 unchanged after the call toPyArray_FromDimsAndData.

The package has actually a patch for the piece of code where this error

on 10.4 with xcode-2.4, it is harmful.

I have just commited two new versions in 10.3/unstable and
10.4/unstable that should fix that.

If one simply removes this piece of code, the compilation continues
further. For me, it then crashed later on, just as the previous revision

I think that's a conflict between netcdf and hdf4: they both define

[Fink-devel] Fwd: Re: Failed: phase compiling: gdl-0.8.11-2 failed

2006-09-04 Thread Sébastien Maret
Hello,

I tried to removed isfinite and isnan in gdl patch, as you suggested.
It compiles fine on 10.4, but fails on 10.3 because isfinite and isnan
are undefined (see the attached patch for 10.3 that Dominique sent
me).

I thought that isfinite and isnan were defined on both 10.3 and 10.4?

Sébastien,

Thanks for the answer.

Can you give a try with the info and patch file in my experimental branch:
 http://fink.cvs.sourceforge.net/fink/experimental/bmaret/finkinfo/

The one for 10.3 is gdl-0.8.11-3.info.

Your patch did not work, but using the patch I buit Friday (it did not
allow the build with the original info file) with your gdl-0.8.11-3.info
worked.

Thanks

Dominique

OK. I was expecting to find those in /sw /share, but I guess gcc4 is
installed in the /sw/lib/gcc4/ directory to avoid conflicts with
something else.

A suggestion: Maybe the --infodir=%i/share/info and
--mandir=%i/share/man options could be passed to the configure script
? That would allow for info and man to find gcc4 info and man pages
without having to set the MANPATH and INFODIR envars manually.

Doesn't work for me. Emacs says that it can't open erc-compat.el.
It's

probably not byte-compiled and removed by:

rm -f @PREFIX@/share/${FLAVOR}/site-lisp/erc/*.el;

in the PostInstScript. Copying it from /sw/share/emacs/site-lisp/
erc to

/sw/share/emacs22/site-lisp/erc solves the problem.

Bah. I spent a while arguing that the .el files should be removed, and
now this :)

I think that removing the .el files is indeed a good idea (provided
that they are byte-compiled of course), since emacs will use the .elc
files anyway.

So, I guess either keep symlinks of all the *.el in the $FLAVOR
directories, or maybe just keep symlinks of *.el files that don't have
corresponding *.elc.

I'd rather patch the Makefile so the erc-compat.el got byte-compiled.

I've implemented Sebastien's proposal; new info and patch file
attached. It seems to work just fine with emacs21, emacs22, and
Brendan's system-emacs.

I see in the patched Makefile that three others .el files aren't
compiled: erc-bbdb.el, erc-chess and erc-speak.el. Is there any
reason for that ? Maybe erc don't need them ?

[Fink-devel] ConfFiles and Python packages variants

2005-11-09 Thread Sébastien Maret
I've downloaded an update of the pyx-py from the trackers (#1306090).
The package installs a conf file in /sw/etc / that is listed in the
ConfFiles: field of the info file. However, when trying to two
variant (-py23 and -py24), dpkg complains about overwriting the file:

/sw/bin/dpkg: error processing /sw/fink/dists/local/main/binary-

trying to overwrite `/sw/etc/pyxrc', which is also in package pyx-py24
/sw/bin/dpkg-deb: subprocess paste killed by signal (Broken pipe)

Isn't dpkg supposed to replace silently the conf file by the new one
(or prompt the user if it has changed) ?

Is there any reason why rdiff-backup is in version 1.0.1 in 10.3 and

I get those assertions too (10.3.9, xcode-1.5) both running yelp

different in

how it handles those assertions or the actual crash (bus error) is
actually caused by something else. There are some XML errors in the
gnome-doc-utils support package that are in the process of being
fixed...perhaps that's the critical problem here?

I just upgrdaed gnome-doc-utils to 0.2.2-1, which gives only one
assertion, and also cures a boatload of later XSLT errors. Any
improvement in the situation for you? Also, what's your language

[Fink-devel] Help in Gnome apps

2005-08-22 Thread Sébastien Maret
I can't read the help files of Gnome app. When I click on Help
Content in e.g Nautilus, I get the following error message.

There was an error displaying help:
Help document user-guide/user-guide.xml not found

I have same error in all my Gnome apps (some do not display any
message though). I had a look in /sw/share/gnome/help, and found the
help files. For some reason Gnome does not find them.

Maybe you could just install metacity ? It is the default gnome

[Fink-devel] xboard and gnuchess

Matthias,

xboardchess does not seems to work with gnuchess. When installing it,
Fink proposes crafty, gnuchess and sjeng as dependencies, but when
choosing gnuchess, xboardchess looks for crafty and crashes:

xboard: Error writing to first chess program: Broken pipe

I am using gnuchess-5.07-2, xboard-4.2.6-1 and MacOSX 10.4.2.

I think this is a problem with recode (libtool's fault, actually):

It builds its dylib with -undefined dynamic_lookup. With the new
behavior of dyld on Tiger, dylibs shouldn't be built using this
flag ever, or else one gets the kind of error you are seeing.

The missing symbol is from libgettextlib.dylib, and instead of the -
undefined dynamic_lookup flag there should be a -lgettextlib flag
on the linker line of recode (plus the corresponding BuildDepends
entry in the info file). Once the -lgettextlib flag is there, the -
undefined dynamic_lookup is actually inoffensive, because there is
no more undefined symbol to lookup.

Thanks Martin. Adding a -lgettextlib flag fixed the problem.
Frédéric, would you mind if I commit the changes in the recode package ?

Just for the record, we solved this on #fink by opening a new terminal
window before installing these pkgs. Perhaps the functioning of some
part of the gconf2 stuff in PostInstScript requires a /sw/profile.d/
script that was installed as part of this fink run, so it was not
available in the current shell's env.
It solved the problem for another gnome package (I don't remember which
one...), but it does help for those. I don't understand why.

[Fink-devel] Python documentation

2004-10-21 Thread Sébastien Maret
Hi,
I have noticed that currently no documentation is installed with
python23 package. The Doc/ directory of the python distribution is
simply copied to /sw/share/doc/python, one can build it using the
Makefile in this directory. It is not straightforward however, since
one of the include file is missing, and some additional packages are
needed to build the documentation (e.g. perl, tetex, latex2html, etc.)

I was thinking of providing a package which build and install the
python documentation. This may come as a splitoff of python23 package,
or as a different package. I see a difficulty: python documentation is
available in many formats: html, ps, pdf, info, and for the paper
versions in a4 and letter format. How can this be handled ? Of course
we could build and install the documentation in all formats, but this
would use quite a lot of space. We could also provide splitoffs or
variants of the packages for the different formats or provide only some
of them. As an example, Debian provides a python-doc package containing
the html and info documentations.

Please let me know what you think.

[Fink-devel] Updating packages and CVS access

2004-08-04 Thread Sébastien Maret
Hi,
I'm maintaining two Fink packages that are in the unstable branch since
two months. I have tested both of them, and haven't not noticed bug
nor received bug reports from users (if there are any :-), so I'd like
to move them in the stable branch. How can I do that ? Is it possible
to get an access to the Fink CVS to move them by myself or should I ask
to a developer to do this for me ?

Thanks,
Sébastien

There is no such thing as libm on any OS X. libm is just a symlink to
libSystem, the standard system library. What bug are you referring to?
From the REAME file of Yorick, the package I'm working on:
Apple shipped MacOS X 10.3 (Panther) with a bug in the system math
library libm (part of /usr/lib/LibSystem.dylib) which can cause the
functions sqrt, sinh, tanh, asinh, acosh, and atanh to malfunction,
when floating point exceptions are unmasked. Yorick is one of the few
(perhaps the only) code which unmasks SIGFPE, so that the CPU will
actually generate SIGFPE signals. Yorick does not use asinh, acosh,
or atanh. For tanh, the buggy system library causes SIGFPE for any
argument, e.g.- tanh(2). For sqrt, the situation is more complicated:
The system library calls the hardware fsqrt instruction for CPUs which
have it, which gives correct results, but for CPUs which do not have
the fsqrt instruction, the system library calls a buggy software sqrt,
which causes SIGFPE for any argument, e.g.- sqrt(2). Thus, yorick's
sqrt works on G5 machines, but fails on G4 machines and earlier
architectures. (In fact, yorick will not even start on a G4 under
MacOS 10.3, since there are a couple of sqrt calls in the startup
code.) Apple introduced the bug with 10.3.0, and it is present in
10.3.1 and 10.3.2, and likely will be present in 10.3.3.
Darwin developers know of this problem, and agree that it is a bug in
Libm-47. There is a chance it will be corrected by 10.3.4.
It seems to be corrected in 10.3.4.

Re: [Fink-devel] Checking MacOSX version number

2004-05-30 Thread Sébastien Maret
yorick already has a fink maintainer, david munro.. it wasn't moved to
the 10.3 tree since it didn't work. Since it does now, it can just be
updated. See:
http://fink.sourceforge.net/pdb/package.php/yorick
David Munroe stopped to maintain this package for some time. I
submitted one month ago a new version for 10.3, which is still under
validation. See:

[Fink-devel] Licence type for CFITSIO

I've written a fink package for the CFITSIO library, but I don't know

The file compress.c contains (slightly modified) source code that
originally came from gzip-1.2.4, copyright (C) 1992-1993 by Jean-loup
Gailly. This gzip code is distributed under the GNU General Public
Licence and thus requires that any software that uses the CFITSIO
library (which in turn uses the gzip code) must conform to the
provisions in the GNU General Public License. A copy of the GNU
licence is included at the beginning of compress.c file.
An alternate version of the compress.c file (called
compress_alternate.c)
is provided for users who want to use the CFITSIO library but are
unwilling or unable to publicly release their software under the terms
of the GNU General Public License. This alternate version contains
non-functional stubs for the file compression and uncompression
routines used by CFITSIO. Replace the file 'compress.c' with
'compress_alternate.c' before compiling the CFITSIO library. This will
produce a version of CFITSIO which does not support reading or writing
compressed FITS files but is otherwise identical to the standard
version.
