[firebird-support] Multiple copies of the same post
Hi, I know it's off-topic, but does anyone else experience receiving multiple copies of some posts on this list, or is it just me? Sometimes I have 2, 3 or 4 identical copies in my inbox (like Hugo's from yesterday - 2 copies). They seem identical except for their X-UIDL, but AFAIK UIDLs are being assigned by the receving e-mail server, so that doesn't prove anything. Sorry to bother you with this, maybe someone just clicks "send" with a shaky hand, but maybe my mailbox is messed up. No duplicates from other lists, though. cheers Tomasz -- __--==--__ __--== Tomasz Tyrakowski==--__ __--==SOL-SYSTEM==--__ __--== http://www.sol-system.pl ==--__ __--==--__

<< it may be worth considering and adjunct piece of software to Firebird, called "HqBird", which uses Firebird as its base database engine. "HqBird" was designed for Firebird databases that are by necessity very large and require more power and capabilities than the standard version may offer. A similar situation has arisen with the equally powerful PostgreSQL database engine where when extensive power is required, the EnterpriseDB database engine has been developed using PostgreSQL as a base. EnterpriseDB can now provide Oracle-like capabilities at a fraction of the cost>> Nice analogy, but not entirely accurate... Paul

Also, as list admin, some other behaviour, such as getting a 404 error when I click through the supplied link to a post that requires moderation. The latter problem went on for a week but it seems to have been resolved now. I wonder whether Mark saw the same thing with the Firebird-Java list. Yahoo recently underwent an ownership change: it belongs to Verisign now. I concluded that our list problems were probably due to new hands on old software as the Verisign people gradually move the Groups archives to their own servers. There's also the activities of U.S.-based list providers having to become compliant with the EU privacy laws by the July 30 deadline. It's probably a mix of circumstances. BTW: the X-UIDL is mail server (or maybe even mail client) specific, but you can trace the duplication/divergence in the 'Received:'-headers of the mail. One of the yahoo.com mail servers will send the message with two (or three) different ESMPTS ids, which means it was asked to send the message twice to your address. That would seem to indicate that the problem is somewhere with the way Yahoo Groups sends out the emails to its subscribers. I'm not sure if we can do much about it. Yahoo (and now Oath) haven't really done anything with Yahoo Groups in the past 10 years but only kept it alive. Mark -- Mark Rotteveel

I've just discovered I've been getting duplicates from one more list (IBObjects), which is also hosted on yahoogroups. So it's not specific to firebird-support, but might be specific to yahoogroups. cheers Tomasz
[firebird-support] Mailing list change?
In light of the current problem of duplicate messages being sent out, I'd like to bring up the idea of changing platforms from the Yahoo Groups platform. Many other mailing lists I receive used to use Yahoo Groups but have moved elsewhere over the past few years due to recurring issues with Yahoo. I think the Firebird lists are the only ones I subscribe to that have not done this. How should we explore this? I this idea of interest to other subscribers or admins? Doug C.

From being received by Yahoo (and posted on the website, going by an experience last week), my mail took 1.5 hours to being sent by mail to me. I have checked Yahoo Feedback (https://yahoo.uservoice.com/forums/209451-us-groups/filters/new) and it seems we're not the only once experiencing these problems. And interestingly enough, if you search for the symptoms, it seems to occur every few years (it is very interesting to get search results from 10 years ago describing the same problem with Yahoo Groups). I've been getting the same thing. It's not all posts but a lot of them get duplicated. Re: [firebird-support] How to store a string in Firebird which includes #0's in it?

I really enjoyed your post, though. IMHO people starting their programming career with "npm install" miss much of the numerical methods basics (like fl arithmetic), which often leads to misunderstanding of terms and exaggregated expectations ;). cheers Tomasz
