[Flashcoders] Union 1.0 is now shipping (free for 1000 users)

2011-05-12 Thread co...@moock.org

hi all,
just thought i'd let you know that Union 1.0--a development platform i
co-founded for creating multiuser applications--is now shipping and
ready for production use in real-world deployments.

Union is free for 1000 simultaneous client connections, with no strings
attached.

see:
http://www.unionplatform.com/

Union has an elegant API for creating chat, whiteboards, real-time
multiplayer games, meeting applications, collaborative editing tools,
and shared interfaces that run in desktop and mobile web browsers
(JavaScript/HTML5), Adobe Flash, Java, C#, or dozens of other languages.

for an intro to Union, see the Union Quick Start guide here:
http://www.unionplatform.com/?page_id=1994

Union features are here:
http://www.unionplatform.com/?page_id=2446

examples are here:
http://www.unionplatform.com/?page_id=1216

if you make something neat, be sure to drop me an email!

Re: [Flashcoders] Actionscript 4?

2010-11-10 Thread co...@moock.org

in august 2008, the work on ecmascript 4 by the ecmascript committee was
officially halted. see:

https://mail.mozilla.org/pipermail/es-discuss/2008-August/006837.html

http://www.mikechambers.com/blog/2008/08/14/actionscript-3-and-ecmascript-4/

as adobe is no longer bound to ecmascript, both the current and aborted
ecmascript specs may well not have any bearing on actionscript's future.

the thing i liked most about ecmascript 4 was community transparency in
the language design process. sadly, that transparency appears to have
been lost for now. i lobby for it every chance i get. to anyone else who
wants to see it return, it might help to post a comment on mike's blog
(above).

Re: [Flashcoders] Apple changes their guidelines

2010-09-09 Thread co...@moock.org

adobe's current official response:

http://blogs.adobe.com/conversations/2010/09/great-news-for-developers.html

Apple’s announcement today that it has lifted restrictions on its
third-party developer guidelines has direct implications for Adobe’s
Packager for iPhone, a feature in the Flash Professional CS5 authoring
tool. This feature was created to enable Flash developers to quickly and
easily deliver applications for iOS devices. The feature is available
for developers to use today in Flash Professional CS5, and we will now
resume development work on this feature for future releases.

This is great news for developers and we’re hearing from our developer
community that Packager apps are already being approved for the App
Store. We do want to point out that Apple’s restriction on Flash content
running in the browser on iOS devices remains in place.

Adobe will continue to work to bring full web browsing with Flash Player
10.1 as well as standalone applications on AIR to a broad range of
devices, working with key industry partners including Google, HTC,
Microsoft, Motorola, Nokia, Palm/HP, RIM, Samsung and others.

[Flashcoders] union 1000-user free licence announced (multiuser dev platform)

2010-05-27 Thread co...@moock.org

greetings flashcoders.

at fitc, we recently announced a free 1000-user licence for union:

http://www.unionplatform.com/?p=1115

also, this week, we posted an online multiplayer pong game tutorial:
http://www.unionplatform.com/?page_id=1229

and a multiuser fridge magnets tutorial:
http://www.unionplatform.com/?page_id=1159

both tutorials include all demo source code.

what's union?

Union is a development platform for creating multiuser applications. It
includes the Union Server, a multiuser communications server, and
Reactor, an ActionScript 3.0 framework for creating Adobe Flash client
applications.

sorry for the intrusion, but I'm trying to get the word out that there's

Re: [Flashcoders] ASDoc third party libraries

2010-04-13 Thread co...@moock.org
if your library is a .swc file, you should be able to just include it in
the -library-path without it being documented, like this:

-source-path ${build.working_root}/src
-library-path+=${build.working_root}/libs

in the case of source-based libraries, you could compile a .swc and link
to that in your code instead, then use the library-path for your docs.
(you also could ask the library developer to offer a .swc...seems like a
good thing to do.)

lower-level -doc-sources entries might do the trick too. e.g.,

-doc-sources /src/com/yourpackageA/ /src/com/yourpackageB/

instead of:

-doc-sources /src/

another option might be to explicitly list all your own classes in the
doc-classes, then set -exclude-dependencies to true.

i don't believe there's a way to exclude a package from docs.

sadly, asdoc is pretty primitive. i have a laundry list of feature
requests that i'll post here when i've entered bugs so people can help
vote them up.

Merrill, Jason wrote:

Those of you who use ASDoc I'm sure have come across this before. If you

How do you handle running ASDoc on a Flash or Flex project where you are
also using other third party libraries? If you run ASDoc on a project
that uses a third party library like Greensock's TweenLite or
Papervision3D, as I am, you can get all kinds of compiler errors because
it tries to include those in the documentation as well (since they are
imported into your classes), and those are not necessarily set up for
ASDoc. I know in FlashDevelop, the Actionscript Documentation Generator
has a field for classes to exclude - but it would be impossible to list
out all those third party classes - is there a way to exclude an entire
package?

2010-03-27 Thread co...@moock.org

hey cor,
i'm guessing jason's example is modern ActionScript 3.0, but if you're
looking for a range of examples, here's one in ActionScript 2.0, showing
how to implement a clock using mvc:

http://www.moock.org/lectures/mvc/

other than little syntactic details, the only aspect of the code that is
obviously outdated is the Observer pattern implementation. in
ActionScript 3.0, you'd use events rather than Observer to send
updates from the model to the view(s), but the example is pretty much
still applicable otherwise. it might even make an interesting study
project to update it to ActionScript 3.0.

have fun!

In basic MVC, the controller listens to both the model and view for events.
Since Flash doesn't have data binding like Flex has, the model might
dispatch an event when a value changes, and the controller would then tell
the view how to change and might send a value to it. Also, the view might
dispatch an event that the controller would be listening for, and the
controller might then tell another view or the model (or both) to change.
So the controller controls the view and the model, but the controller does
not get controlled.

In more advanced patterns and frameworks, you have things like commands
(like in Cairngorm), façades, proxies etc. to also facilitate these
communications.

I missed the beginning of this thread somehow, but FWIW, FlashDevelop
has an Add New Event menu option in the project pane when you right
click on a package folder which makes creating custom events a snap.
All you really have to do is enter the static event constants you want
the event to have and you're done. When you select this option, it
auto-generates a file with this in it:

package events
{

import flash.events.Event;

/**
 * ...
 * @author Jason Merrill
 */
	public class NewEvent extends Event
	{

public function NewEvent(type:String,
bubbles:Boolean=false, cancelable:Boolean=false)
		{
			super(type, bubbles, cancelable);

		}

		public override function clone():Event
		{
			return new NewEvent(type, bubbles, cancelable);
		}

		public override function toString():String
		{
			return formatToString(NewEvent, type,
bubbles, cancelable, eventPhase);
		}

}

}

Hi Susan I cannot recommend any OOP book but I can recommend Lynda.com.
Lynda.com has some great video courses, like

hi all,
as the author of an oop book myself, i have to admit that books aren't
always the right learning tool for everyone. i agree with benny...i've
liked the video training that's been emerging over the last few years.

here are a bunch of other free options:

http://tv.adobe.com/channel/development/actionscript

in fact, there's also a video version of Essential ActionScript 3.0
available called The Lost ActionScript 3.0 Weekend. it's a commercial
product, but lots of it is freely available online here:
