What is your usb device? If it accessible trough hyperterminal, zinc can get
it, if hyperterminal can't see it, then you would require a driver.

Joe, i thought about that I also fund a xtra for doing so too but, i would
rather avoid using Director.

Pedro, I have been checking out Zinc and it has a COMPort class which I
beleive is I/O communication. when I did a quick test to check whether it
could detect some USB device, I only got connaction with COM1, COM2 which i
beleive are the serial and parallel port, no?

Anyone else?

 Lingo commands for interacting with actionscript.

im having a hell of a time finding info on this. ive got a person with a

trigger different animations in different movie clips. cant for the life of
me figure out how to set up the scripts to respond to the different cue
points.

cue points in video being stop1 stop2 stop3 stop4 etc with no
naming/parameter info attached

anyone know where to find this info?
ive got the video cut and imported fine, ive put the cue points on it fine.
just need code to collect the cue points, and based on which cue point it
is, fire off play(2) commands to different movieclips triggering animations
timed with the video

here's what ive got so far: but this just sees all the cue points.. I need
to trigger different actions based on which cue point it is, and have that
send an action to a separate clip

var vidList:Object = new Object();
vidList.cuePoint = function(cues) {
ex.gotoAndPlay(2);
};
vid.addEventListener(cuePoint, vidList);

eek
im guessing that I need to stick if statements in the function to check for
the cue name? not sure how to set that up, im a front end guy, this coding
turns my brain numb :-)

thanks!

As far as I know, you have to stop the tween a start a new one.

Subject: [Flashcoders] update tween value while running

Hi there, I've got a question about updating actionscript tweens in real
time. When for example you use the mx.transitions.Tween class and have an
object move from x value 50 to 100, how would you go about updating that end
value while the tween is running?

If you update the x value manually the tween onMotionChanged event overrides
it during the next cycle. You could stop the tween and start a new one based
on the updated end value and calculate how much of the duration is left but
if you apply any easing that doesn't do the trick.

Any thoughts on how to handle this? Would really like to find a clean
solution to do it so I can still keep using the Tween class rather than
scripting the calculation myself and checking end value every frame or x
milliseconds.

Question basically is how I can update the value of an object that is being
tweened without it being overwritten and/or changing the end value of a
tween. Thanks for any advice!

Nick,

I try to avoid third party software when possible. I am going to write a
C++ file that will handle the model side of the program and read/write
C++ to
the disk. Then I can use Flash for the view and controller portions. I
know this can be done quite easily (using ActiveX and FSCommand, I think).
I am reasonably proficient with MS Visual C++, but I have never run a swf
from within a C++ application.

So, yes I do have a plan. It may take me some time to figure out the
intricacies of it, however.

Pedro,

I have found that third party software is often poorly tested, poorly
documented, and pooly maintained. Too many times, I have been asked to
update something that had third party components, only to find that the
company had gone out of business. Also, there can be licensing issues for
distributed software... If I build it up from scratch then I eliminate
future headaches, even if it does take longer now.

 Subject: [Flashcoders] video card suggestions: tearing animations

 Hey all -

 I've got an application I'm building that is using a digital
 signage system as an animated menu system, using 2 cards for
 a 3 LCD output.
 I'm seeing some TERRIBLE tearing during the animations.

 At first I thought it was the LCD screen; but swapping in a
 CRT and I still see the problem. The two cards an Nvidia
 GeforceFX 540 and an Nvidia Geforce FX5200.

 I've read recently in a review aobut the 5200:

 For the long period of its development and short life, the GeForce
 FX 5200 has changed the recommended clock speeds for the
 core and memory at least 10 times. The problem is the first
 tests of pre-production samples demonstrated a performance so
 astonishingly low that it would be out of the question and
 even fatal to launch video cards in such a bad condition on
 to the market.

 So my question is: I need 3 outputs -- PCI slots -- to drive
 3 lcds at 1280x768.

 Any suggestions?

RE: [Flashcoders] retrieving names of external files in a folder (oris there something similar to Directors getNthFileNameInFolder())

2006-05-03 Thread Pedro Furtado
Well there's no way to access local files, that's been a security issue for
a long time now. You can however use any of the flash wrappers around and
they will provide you with the functionality. Some of them are free some
aren't. But they all support what you're looking for.

I made a very basic directory scraper class way back. I use this with
AMFPHP.

with a PHP file returning a variable containing the files in that folder.
 Works well enough for the web but it feels like overkill for a standalone

 Is there a simpler way to do this?

I dare to add a few thoughts of me own.
A good application is one that works, an excellent application is one that

That said and with utra-tight deadlines together with designers having to

This of course doesn't apply to frameworks and such, but still there's room

Let's make classes for everything. Let's make components out of everything.
There are so many benefits to complicating things and we CAN do it so we
SHOULD do it because it's so clever and smart to do it that way. Let's code
everything in one frame when working closely with designers so we can make
them feel stupid and helpless when they go into our application and can't
find anything and we can feel so superior to them because it's so obvious
and now we have to walk them through it and by doing so can show them how
smart and clever we are.

Let's stroke our egos to prove what smart coders we are and program job
security into our applications by making it extremely difficult for our
clients to hire anyone else to work on our code, especially considering we
might not be available (busy, vacation, dead) to help walk anyone through
the complicated messaging system we've put into place to do something as
simple as storing global variables. It's such a clever way of doing things,
don't you see? We've built a better mousetrap! Those people using a simple
global namespace objects are suckers!

I'm not saying variable watchers and events don't have their place, but
we're talking about a global namespace to store variables available to the
entire application, a replacement for _global and the conflicts that can
arise from it, something that has been done longer than you've been coding.
You're acting like a simple global namespace to store variables is only for
noob coders and that really smart coders make their code super complicated.
You guys are the reason Dreamweaver MX 2004, Photoshop 7, etc. take 10-20
seconds to start up instead of 1-3 like their predecessors. You guys are
the reason many clients have bad tastes in their mouths from working with
independent contractors. Why not apply your cleverness and creativity to
planning your next DD campaign or go learn a real programming language like
C and learn to program games if you're so smart.

As far as debugging goes, I've never had trouble with standard debugging
techniques. You know, like trace() and NetDebug.trace(). Quick and easy.
Here's my debug code:

import mx.remoting.debug.NetDebug;
NetDebug.initialize();
_global.out = function(m) {
trace(m);
NetDebug.trace(m);
}

Oh noes! It's not complicated enough for you! Feel superior in your
complicated debugging style!

Fast ones :D
7/10 are interactive advertising, which means that I have usually 2 weeks(at
best) to do something that doesn't relate and never had the time to make me
own framework.
Still I insist in a one frame architecture, and leave the all the item in
the library for the designers.

May I ask why the curiosity?

RE: [Flashcoders] Learn AS2 or AS3?

Not really, if you use AS2 in all it's strictness and to it's full extent,
classes and properly it's not a big change in the logic itself, only a
little change in the syntax.

This may be a little late to this conversation but I'd have to disagree.
I would learn AS3 and skip AS2. You can only learn and experiment with
AS3 in Flex Builder 2 (as far as i know) since Flash Authoring (the next
version of Flash) is not out yet.

Looking at the specs and transitions from AS2 to AS3 a lot has changed.
Look at this list
http://livedocs.macromedia.com/labs/1/flex/langref/migration.html
In fact it's a whole new engine reworked from the ground up. Some
functions have changed, moved or been removed so you are going to learn
about a lot of syntax and methods and functions and by the time you
learn it and get it down you will have to throw it out because AS3 is
vastly different. It's just a personal opinion but this late in the game
it might just end up confusing you to learn AS2 now.
