Re: [Flashcoders] Ajax and ActionScript 2.0
Could somebody share with me 1 example where AJAX/XMLHttpRequest succeeds where Flash fails ? The term AJAX is thrown around loosly these days to sometimes mean anything JavaScript. I've seen both Flash using JavaScript and JavaScript using Flash (FJAX) for server communication. I can't say how much either solution makes sense, but at least they're working together instead of succumbing to the old Flash vs. JavaScript and Which is Better? debate. There are so many useful things they can do together. Look for the Browser Power for Flash session at the next FlashForward. It is all about Flash and JavaScript and some really cool stuff they can do ... well worth your time. There will also be some previews on the subject coming soon to uFlash.org. Tyler ps. don't mind this email if you've received it before. It's being resent because of an initial failure to send. ___ Flashcoders@chattyfig.figleaf.com To change your subscription options or search the archive: http://chattyfig.figleaf.com/mailman/listinfo/flashcoders Brought to you by Fig Leaf Software Premier Authorized Adobe Consulting and Training http://www.figleaf.com http://training.figleaf.com

RE: [Flashcoders] Ajax and ActionScript 2.0
XHTML and CSS are much more suited to display and edit text than flash. I would take issue with that. You're leaving out the whole beauty of embedded (programmatically or otherwise) anti-aliased fonts in Flash! A big plus for me and my clients. :) Jason Merrill Bank of America Learning Organization Effectiveness - Technology Solutions ___ Flashcoders@chattyfig.figleaf.com To change your subscription options or search the archive: http://chattyfig.figleaf.com/mailman/listinfo/flashcoders Brought to you by Fig Leaf Software Premier Authorized Adobe Consulting and Training http://www.figleaf.com http://training.figleaf.com

I'm not trying to make you look foolish, it's just that overblown descriptions like that are what make real programmers delete the job posting without finishing the first paragraph. I'm in with that. IMO you should only say We need people! This is our portfolio, if you think you can help us give us a call! I think every good AS programmer can program javascript and thus AJAX sites (If they want to is another issue ;)). I'm just meaning to say, I really do think it's a bit useless to ask for experience in some kind of language. You did it rather nicely to only say AS or AJAX, but I see very much job postings with With a good knowledge of PHP, ASP, ASP.NET, XHTML, HTML, CSS, PERL, JS, SQL, C# etc etc... The best way IMO is getting to know people in a reallife conversation and maybe ask them a few logical questions that a good programmer can answer, not covering one (script)language. Our application is 95% Flash 8, relying on Ajax to fill the spaces where Flash fails, so we're also looking for Ajax developers who have mastered Flash to Javascript communication. Could somebody share with me 1 example where AJAX/XMLHttpRequest succeeds where Flash fails ? I would prefer flash XML.sendAndLoad over AJAX anyday, as the XML object is a bit easier.. and you can get around the domain limitations imposed by AJAX. I would prefer flash XML.sendAndLoad over AJAX anyday, as the XML object is a bit easier.. and you can get around the domain limitations imposed by AJAX. The only situation I can think of offhand would be one where someone has a browser which offers a standard XmlHttpRequest ability, and where the person has not installed Adobe Flash Player. There aren't many of these, but they do exist. One piece of data I've never been able to lock down is How many consumers actually use 'any modern browser'? Five years ago we were told it was very important to not inconvenience even 5% of an audience, but somehow those same values don't get quite the same reporting coverage today ;-) Hmm, maybe a different way to approach this problem: If some of our audience CANNOT request text refreshes, then what's the most friendly way to accommodate them? In this case, someone may be using an old browser for a reason and may not wish to change their whole viewing environmnet... it's easier to update a small plugin instead, more transparent, less chrome and fewer changes to habit. XHR-specific Flash advantages: cross-domain requests; binary transfers; sockets and server push; more media requests than just text. But we use ajax for when flash fails... I don't know of anyone nailing down the data on this, but strongly suspect it's the other way around. jd -- John Dowdell . Adobe Developer Support .
