Frontpage is now - Expression Web (re-modeled and re-done to make it smarter etc). ASP Classic got moved to ASP.NET, ASP.NET 2.0 is extremely popular for the RAD approach it provides. Now we have ASP Futures release which combined with Silverlight is pushing this evolution forward. Microsoft are extremely committed to the Apple platform, if we weren't you would would not of seen Silverlights launchpad event to be demo'd on a Mac. It's about a series of channelled offerings and Apple users aren't being left out on the Mac. Again there are three tiers of offerings here, Ultimate Experience (WPF), Great Experience (Silverlight) and Good Experience (AJAX/HTML). Our value proposition to developers in the current .NET space that they have the ability to move between these three tiers using their C#/VB.NET passports mixed with XAML. Now if folks want to jump on board from the Flex world, that's fine but I doubt Flex will die simply because Microsoft is in the room, as Scott.G said this isn't a zero sum game,no two brands will own the market.Silverlight and Live.com are a solution service that we think is quite exciting and I think there is room for combination of both brands. In the interest of killing such debates, I'm keen to spinup some combination applications of FLEX + Silverlight working together. Microsoft Expressions a new development tool reminded a lot of people of flash studio and it seems like a copy of flash with A Microsoft label on top. Although I didn't get to see a lot of the under working just a quick over view, essentially by default the time line is on the bottom drawing tools on the right and library on the left. It seemed so similar during the overview I heard people actually laughing saying it looked like flash. however looking at the code that was generated and the movements and transitions were basically generated with java. When they were showing how to program their gadgets which the presenter even slipped and called widgets not just once but twice they made it actually fairly simple. 3 short files of javascript, xaml markup, and c# for a simple gadget however with the demos I have seen of Apollo I believe in the end there will be by far more Apollo gadgets/widgets or what ever you want to call them compared to Vista gadgets. And as a plus Apollo is cross platform where needless to say the few Linux/mac people that were there were not impressed with the windows only capability but talking with a couple saying that Apollo could do the same things but also work on Linux/mac machine I must say it really made their day. While Apollo's future will obviously go far beyond just simple widgets this just seems to be how Microsoft lined up their development demos showing mainly a few gadgets and bunch of look what happens to the button when I click on it. The only thing that I saw showcased as far as application development that Microsoft has an edge with is 3d rendering, which in time I imagine flash will have very little problems with. Re: [flexcoders] Web Services and CF7
Ted, although you do mention search you don't specifically mention CF query result sets. One thing that I'd like to mention for the benefit of others using Flex and ColdFusion is that while CF can return query result sets via Remoting and Web Services this is not a native object/data type in the Flash player, and consequently Flex. While the Flash player can process this via the Remoting and Web Services APIs it's time consuming as the data is being converted into something native first. You're better off to return arrays of objects (CF structures) instead, I don' t have the figures but I know that there is a dramatic performance difference, particularly for large sets of data. In the use cases we are using this data service for: Search Directory Articles Ecommerce Personalization The requests and responses are all different but we want a common way to develop them to completion. We would like a productive language like CF but it has to work in all cases. The fallback here is to just use Apache Axis with Java classes on the server side although I would prefer something simple and easy to change like CFC's. Re: [flexcoders] How to configure MXML schema in Eclipse + OxygenXML 6?
Hans Apologies if this appears twice. I buggerised around for a while and found success if I used the following settings (totally non scientific/documented settings, might be a better way): In Window/Preferences/oXygen/Editor/Tag Insight/Default I added the following: Namespace: Any Root local name: Any File name: Any Schema type: XML Schema Schema URI: file location of XSD file I then moved this entry to the top of the list, have been using it for about a day and it seems to work for me so far without having any noticable side effect on other file types. Re: [flexcoders] Installing Flex on OS X
Jasper We've had some design issues with small fonts and tight layouts that have made it necessary to make some small changes for Windows OS that didn't show up on our OS X machines that we've been prototyping with. Due to the size of the application we've chosen not to embed fonts.
