One thing that is very different in the SDR-1000/PowerSDR from Leiff's excellent article is that our final brick wall filter is AFTER all speech processing, including ALC. This means that it filters out most of the splatter before it ever gets amplified. I verified this on a spectrum analyzer

Shouldn't peak power for AM be exactly the same as SSB?In other words, if I cannot transmit more than 125 watts, peak, with SSB (to prevent amplifier distortion), then I'd think that I shouldn't be able to transmit more than 125 watts, peak, with AM (andthe AM carrier power should be 1/4 of

[Flexradio] Peak Power AM vs SSB

2006-02-09 Thread Bill Nagle
There is a phenomena in linear amps that are used to transmit AM: The AM carrier causes a flywheel effect which fills in the missing parts of the rf cycle. This allows operation at higher peak powers without i-m distortion being generated. This does NOT happen in ssb modes. Thus you can run

Bill, Glad to hear that the new ALC is to your liking. The peak power meter is still not right as far as I can tell. AM peak should not be 200W, unless I am missing something. The Leveler is used basically to apply a very slow AGC to the microphone in order to keep the volume from dropping
