Hi techheads...Got an unusual (for me) problem...
Got another laptop for dxpedition, but the PSDR 2 stopped working.
Laptop is Acer Aspire 5520, 4GB RAM, 500MB HDD, Intel 2GHZ dual
core processor, firewire.
When I first installed it, there was no problem... worked a few
stations on CW and SSB
Eddie,
Part of the issue might be that you did not RIGHT click the install
executable Run as Administrator .Check to see if the DPC will become
ungray if you RIGHT click the FireWire driver icon (FlexRadio) and again
Run as AdministratorYou can just uninstall the FireWire driver and
Dudley, you beat me to it. I noted the other day that my DPC was greyed out
so I restarted it using Run as Administrator and washed away the grey.
Win7 continues to puzzle me, though. I set myself as administrator, i.e.
gave myself administrator privileges when I set myself up as a user and the
Is it supposed to work like that? If I called MS would they tell me
complacently that it was a feature, not a bug?
In a word Yes... that's exactly the way it's designed to work, unless you
completely disable UAC.
It's not nearly as ridiculous as it first might seem. Think of it this way:
U...but if I tried to invoke the program wouldn't it be pretty obvious
that I...ummm...wanted to invoke the program? I'm not sure the MS's
reasoning here makes a whole lot of sense. But I'm the only one who ever
uses that computer sobye bye UAC.
Thanks, Peter. I appreciate the help.
MS has certainly improved it over Vista which was unusable. I find
VirtualStore more obnoxious so I turn that off when I install a new system
(I actually turn off UAC also but thats secondary).
The problem with turning off VirtualStore is that if you do not do it
immediately after installing
is any one can tell me how to switch if of the administrator i think you call
it UAC?

It is obvious that YOU may want to run that program, but UAC is designed
also for when SOMETHING (malware or other program) runs a program while
YOU are logged on, in that way it cannot use YOUR power as administrator
without YOU allowing it via UAC or RUN AS, UAC always 1 click up from

If this leaves you queasy, download UWT (you can find it on the links to
suggested programs on www.flexradiowiki.com) and go to the Security tab. You
can just uncheck it there.
If you are doing a new install, run UWT immediately after the install and
turn off Virtual Store, UAC and more. I will

I think the ill feeling towards MS is very unwarranted in general. They are
trying to dance in front of a lot of different audiences and need to dance
to the one with the most money and opportunity (which isn't commercial guys
but corporations).

Some years ago I had the privilege to sit in a meeting with a Director
of Research of a government Agency that pays a lot of attention to
computers. The Director explained that he had a plan for an absolutely
secure OS kernel, and had approached Bill Gates to urge him to adopt
this plan. As it

VSPManager. Especially if you are running a 64-bit operating system.
If you are using a 32-bit OS, either one is a good choice, but I'd give the nod
to VSPManager.

George Heron N2APB mentions the Flex products in an interview he did
about his SDR Cube project. Interesting reading/listening.
