I wouldn't get too excited about USB3 yet. Intel does not support
USB3 in any of their chip sets yet and is not expected to until sometime
in the middle of 2011. Until Intel jumps on the bandwagon (which they
will), there will be too many computers without USB3 for it to be a

On the bright side, nobody will have to consider anything after 2012, so
let's just forget about the whole thing!

Not quite true! I would say 40% of the motherboards out have a model that
supports USB3 and the addon cards for it are about the same price as the
usb2 add on cards. I haven't seen any products yet that do USB3 but the
computer side is there and waiting.
FYI, Intel has dropped support for PCI
I have read that Intel is betting on an optical-fiber technology that is
claimed to be faster and more flexible (physically) than USB3.
The only USB3 devices of which I am aware are the Seagate GoFlex
external drives. They come with a USB2 interface, but that can be
replaced by any one of a

I have also read that even USB2 device will transfer data faster when
connected to a USB3 port.
It depends. USB High Speed (which is what you're referring to when you say
USB2) devices will transfer data at the same data rate on a USB V3.0 Super
Speed (XHCI) controller as they would on a

IEE1394a is disappearing from all but the 'top end' laptops.
I cannot find ANY 'firewire' devices that will connect to a modern
laptop... and
Within the last week, I saw one Sony laptop at Costco for about $1,100
that had a Firewire port (yesterday). I also saw a similar Sony at
BestBuy for about $100 more. The Best Buy one was a better computer
with more RAM. I also saw another Sony at Best Buy for about $800 with
Firewire.
Hi Terry,
Thank you for the guidance... Although I am in Australia, the
exchange rate is really good (for us!) at the moment, and I might
import one.
Hi Peter,
I accept that USB(3) is very different from firewire... It is just
a fact of life that firewire is slowly fading into the sunset and

Eddie,
I too saw at Fry's Sony , Toshiba, HP and Lenovo with FW ports.
Lenovo still has T410s and T510s with built in FireWire.Dell owns
the Alien brand and there is a 1100 laptop that is a real smoker.
Just make sure that you have a PCIe slot so that if / when the built-in
