RE: [Flightgear-devel] OpenAL - http://www.openal.org

2004-04-23 Thread Phillip Jones
Thanks for the feedback. I was hoping to catch up with you after
you'd
finished flying and discover what you thought of the helicopter
dynamics,
but missed you. I guess we've got some serious improvement to do. If
you
fly our helicopters occaisionally and tell us what is good and bad
about
the modelling that would be fantastic - I'm not aware of any other
real-life heli pilots on the list.

My labmate has ~9 years military helicopter experience; I can ask him
for feedback if you want?

[Flightgear-devel] Saitek Cyborg Evo joystick xml file done

2004-05-12 Thread Phillip Jones
I witnessed a lot of discussion about joysticks with flightgear under
windows, and the swapped axis problem. But when I connected this one,
the only problem I had was that the default joystick mapping didn't
include rudder control! Anyway, I made an xml based off of the Cyborg
Gold 3D USB xml file and it works pretty well for me.

If anyone wants a copy, I'll send it to you. Should this maybe go in
the CVS?

[Flightgear-devel] Difference between pre-compiled 0.9.4 and source 0.9.4

2004-06-18 Thread Phillip Jones
I just compiled 0.9.4 from source (using cygwin), and noticed the
aileron problem on the C172 (I saw the thread about this and know that's
its already fixed in CVS). What I find strange is that the pre-compiled
binaries do not have this same bug. Anyone know why this is?

The other thing I notice is that start up time for the
compiled-from-source program is *significantly* longer than for the
pre-compiled binaries. Just now, it took ~5 seconds for the splash
screen and ~15 sec total startup time for the precompiled program. The
from-source program takes more than 1min for the splash screen to
appear, and 1min30sec for full startup. After startup, it seems to run
just fine. Any suggestions on how to improve startup time?

Phillip

[Flightgear-devel] RE: 1st flight

2004-07-01 Thread Phillip Jones
The true about flight history!!!

http://www.thefirsttofly.hpg.ig.com.br/pioneer2.htm

Best regards,

James

If we're talking first flight history, you gotta include this guy.
Richard Pearse, first flight: March 1903 (some say 1902), in New
Zealand.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Pearse
http://www.ctie.monash.edu.au/hargrave/pearse1.html

His design was the first to use ailerons and a variable-pitch
propeller (although the propeller itself was very poor design).

Richard Pearse himself claimed to *not* have beaten the Wright
brothers to flight, but he considered flight to be completely
controlled take-off, controllable flight (ie steerable), and
controlled landing. So, when he flew ~1000ft across his property
and crashed into a hedge 10-12ft off the ground because the
controls didn't work properly, he walked away saying that he
hadn't flown.
