Ok, thanks, I'll get that taken care of. Hopefully I can get the
windows version rolled up today as well.

Yeah ;-)
The GCC-3.4.x release notes mention even binary compatibility with the
respective commercial compilers on both IRIX and Solaris.
GCC on Solaris is not really a bad choice - we got along pretty well
since 1995 :-) and Solaris/Sparc is a widely used platform with lots
of supporters. On the other hand even on IA32 GCC has been outperformed
by the respective commercial compilers (by Intel), so I suspect
similarities on Sparc as well,

I have a small (90 MHz) Quad HyperSparc with GCC-3.4.1. I was surprised
because it doesn't take as long as GCC-3.3.x did. I also have an
Ultra10 available (the machine I run www/ftp.de.flightgear.org on) but
I must admit that I prefer to do these things at home.
I don't have the abilities to really test the performance on Sparc
because mine is headless and I only can do "proof of concept" via
remote display on an SGI. I'd be interested in feedback from people who
have a Creator3D card.

GCC-3.4.1 for Sparc hardware isn't that bad anymore but I'd be still
interested in trying out the commercial compiler by Sun,

Martin.

The package is present at the usual place:

  ftp://ftp.uni-duisburg.de/FlightGear/Solaris/fgfs-0.9.5-Solaris.tar.gz

I'm planning to create a package for the regular Solaris installer but
I'm not done yet. The README:

README file for FlightGear on Solaris binary release packages.
---

This package includes the FlightGear binar, built for Solaris8/sparcv8
and the two required GCC runtime libraries.
You don't need to unpack the GCC libraries if you already have the
complete GCC-3.4.x or at least the corresponding GCC runtime freeware
package installed.
Make sure you have enough texture memory on your creator card.

It seems like every operating system and distribution has a different
mechanism for prepackaging software. So if you want to package FG for a
particular platform or linux distribution, you really need to
investigate the specific details on your own. It's not always simple or
trivial, but once it's done, it generally makes the life of everyone
else (who runs that same platform) a lot easier.

Curt.
