FLUXLIST: OSU Rare Books temporary closing
The Rare Books and Manuscripts Library of The Ohio State University Libraries (OSUL) will be closed from May 30th until July 10th, 2006. The Main Library at OSUL will undergo a $100 million renovation beginning in Autumn 2006. In preparation for the renovation, the Main Library will be emptied and Rare Books will be the first unit to vacate the building, a process that has been going on for over a year. Rare Books finds it untenable to operate its reading room and reference services, and conduct the final stages of its move simultaneously. On July 10th, Rare Books will reopen in its temporary home at the Ohio State University Archives at 2700 Kenny Road, Columbus, Ohio 43210-1046. It is anticipated that Rare Books will be in this temporary location until Autumn 2009. Please feel free to contact us on or after July 10th regarding reference requests. Please address concerns to Geoffrey D. Smith at [EMAIL PROTECTED] or 614.292.5938. This includes the Avant Writing Collection. You can also contact me with any concerns: John M. FLUXLIST: Karen Eliot
Karen Eliot is a name that refers to an individual human being who can be anyone. The name is fixed, the people using it aren't. The purpose of many different people using the same name is to create a situation for which no one in particular is responsible and to practically examine western philosophical notions of identity, individuality, originality, value and truth. Anyone can become Karen Eliot simply by adopting the name, but they are only Karen Eliot for the period in which they adopt the name. Karen Eliot was materialised, rather than born, as an open context in the summer of 1985. When one becomes Karen Eliot one's previous existence consists of the acts other people have undertaken using the name. When one becomes Karen Eliot one has non family, no parents, no birth. Karen Eliot was not born, s/he was materialised from social forces, constructed as a means of entering the shifting terrain that circumscribes the 'individual' and society. http://www.thing.de/projekte/7:9%23/eliot_index.html

From: John Berndt <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" <'[EMAIL PROTECTED]'> Subject: Cheetah Diabetic Date: Mon, 15 May 2006 08:58:32 -0400 To start your days off on the right foot: Tarzan chimp celebrates 74th birthday in SoCal desert Monday, April 10, 2006 (04-10) 11:42 PDT Palm Springs, Calif. (AP) Cheeta the chimp, star of a dozen Tarzan movies in the 1930s and 1940s, celebrated his 74th birthday with sugar-free cake. Although healthy and active, Cheeta is diabetic. He had a good time. The party went real good, said keeper Dan Westfall, operator of the primate sanctuary Creative Habitats and Enrichment for Endangered and Threatened Apes or CHEETA. Representatives from a Spanish film festival also showed up for Sundays party to present Cheeta with the first award of his career an International Comedy Film Festival of Peniscola prize. Cheeta has been recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the worlds oldest chimp. Chimps rarely live past the age of 40 in the wild, but can reach 60 in captivity. The graying, 150-pound Cheeta, one of six primates at the desert sanctuary 110 miles east of Los Angeles, is very active and he still has every tooth in his head, Westfall said Monday. Asked about his typical day, Westfall said one of Cheetas favorite activities is riding around with him in the car. He also likes to paint, what Westfall calls ape-stract pieces that are sold to raise money for the nonprofit sanctuary. Westfall adopted Cheeta in 1992 from his uncle Tony Gentry, an animal trainer who worked in Hollywood and obtained Cheeta from Africa in the 1930s.
